Chicago PD - The Weigh Station - Review

11 Oct 2014

“Purgatory…It’s a weigh station, between heaven and hell. Like this place. Heaven for you is upstairs…Hell, it’s a place we call the silos.”

Last week’s hit put out on Halstead by Oscar Bembenek comes to a head this week when a shooter almost hits Jay, and hits the bartender instead. My apologies, I thought her name was Mandy, apparently it’s Maddie. Maddie is alive, but barely.

The team hits the ground running, as a bounty on a cop’s head is serious business.
Olinsky goes to the prison to talk to Oscar. Let me just say, I would not want to be on Olinsky’s bad side. There’s a reason he is so tight with Voight. Olinsky reminds Oscar that while he’s currently in protective custody, he does have a lot of enemies, who would love nothing more than a chance to take a shot at him. Olinsky gives Oscar the chance to call off the hit, and of course, Oscar doesn’t take it.

While everyone on the team is out on assignments, Voight puts Jay in protective custody, and his babysitters are Burgess and New Guy Roman. Roman’s exchange with Jay was my favorite of the episode:
“Let’s head in Voight’s office, Jay,” says Roman.
“First of all, it’s Detective. Second, let’s you and me not get off on the wrong foot.” You go, Jay! I mean, Detective Halstead.

Antonio and Lindsay catch the driver who gives up his friend Kyle, the shooter. Kyle is thrown into the cage (can we start a hashtag? #TheCage), so of course things aren’t looking up for him. He agrees to give answers, and reveals that Oscar has a hit list. Then, the bodies of family members involved in the Bembenek trial begin to turn up.
The investigation leads to a retired hit man named JP, who knows Voight and Olinsky from way back. He helps with the investigation, going so far as to draw the shooter out by claiming to have Halstead. When the shooter reveals his insurance (in the form of JP’s son), JP turns on the team and takes off with Halstead. Of course, Halstead takes him down, because you don’t go up against an Army Ranger expecting to win.

Olinsky goes back to the prison to see Oscar. He asks Oscar if he remembers his mistress (who he killed), and says that she has a brother, who also happens to be in prison. Olinsky not only has the protective custody removed, but also has Oscar moved to where this brother is. If you take one thing away from this episode, let it be this: do not cross Alvin Olinsky.

I’m all for a Halstead-centric episode, but this felt like a filler. There were a few subplots that stood out, and few minor moments that have the potential to become something more. Let’s take a look:

1. When a security guard is a bit flirty with Ruzek in front of Burgess, Burgess overreacts, big time. I mean, they aren’t even that serious, and she starts the whole, “Maybe we should take a break” thing. Seriously? Someone flirted with him, get over it! He’s hot, of course women are going to flirt with him. But he wasn’t interested, so why is she mad? Burgess was growing on me, and she just took a few steps in the wrong direction.

Okay, sorry. Rant over. Moving on…

2. Platt gives Nadia a bit of an attitude and squashes her dreams of ever becoming a cop. "Kill them with kindness" is always a good motto, so Nadia gives Platt a birthday card. Platt spends the rest of the episode trying to make it up to Nadia (while of course, still being Platt). I really like this bond, and it makes sense. I think Platt sees a bit of Erin in Nadia, and we all know how much Platt loves Erin (but we still don’t know why…).
3. Momma Lindsay is back and she’s getting married…today! She wants Erin there, but Erin blows her off. At the end of the episode, Erin does go to the wedding. She and her mom seemed to have gained a little ground (okay, a baby step). I hope we see more of Momma Lindsay, because she is our best window into Erin’s past.

4. Roman has some beef with Olinsky. He asks, “You really don’t remember me?” in that disgruntled sort of way. I am excited to learn more about Roman, and why he has a chip on his shoulder.

5. Erin meets up with Voight after her mom’s wedding, and tells Voight that he is her family. He responds, “You’re about the best thing that ever happened to me. I mean that.” I like that these two have made up. Voight was also beaming with pride with Halstead, and I really think that if he could pick anyone for Erin, it would be Jay. Of course, he has that stupid rule, but I think that will soon change. I hope.
6. New Girl Sylvie is at the hospital, checking on Maddie. She and Jay talk, and once the doc reveals that Maddie’s in recovery, New Girl Sylvie invites Halstead to Molly’s. I think she has a thing for Halstead, and really, who could blame her? I hope they don’t try to run with this, and Jay doesn’t seem interested, so I’m hoping that means they won’t. But, it might make Erin realize that she has feelings for Jay if she sees him with someone else…

What did you think of this episode? When will Erin and Jay get it together and get together?

  1. It didn't really fill like a Jay centric episode. The episode was good overall, jesse and sophia amazing acting. sylvie better keep away from Jay if they want people to like her. We get it she shays replacement, stop shoving her in our faces. It's not going to make people like her. Tired of this CF characters messing with Erin and Jay. I really hope Erin and Jay get it together and get together

  2. I agree with all you said. It wasn't that Jay centric but never the less well balanced. I also was hoping it would bring Jay and Erin closer. But I can wait as long as they don't harass us with Sylvie. Her appearance wasn't needed at all in that last scene. Jay could have been in the hospital all by himself - it even would have been a better scene because it would have underlined his desperation and loneliness (apparently he has no family either).

  3. Great review, thanks. I think just the Promo made it a Jay centric episode, but it wasn't a filler either, because it let the others also shine. It was lacking of good Erin and Jay scenes though. ''Be smart'' is all we got, really? But I am going to be patient, otherwise it was great.

    1. Olinsky rocked! Loved him in the jail scenes and how he put Roman on the spot! I hope on of these days Roman will have the guts to blur it out what is bothering him. Roman seems to be quite straight forward, so the pouting he is doing with O is tiring.

    2. Platt and Nadia awesome. I loved how Nadia held her ground, and Platt came back to her and tried to make up but being Platt at the same time.

    3. Burgess - I agree with you, she over did it.

    4. Voight showing pride of Halstead - finally! Great moment! Loved how uncomfortable Jay looked in that moment. Jay said before he had no family but Voight praised him and said he is part of this family and all the others acknowledged it.

    5. Great that Voight and Erin made up. I don't think Erin and her mother are any closer than they were before just because she went to the wedding. She went straight from the wedding to Voight to tell him he is her family which I think could be read that there is no way she will ever reconcile with her mother.

    6. Writers came close to ruining the last scene of Jay in the hospital. Brett had no real business being there and it would have been a lot better to show Jay's despair and loneliness when he had been all alone.

  4. Thanks!
I would still say it was Jay-centric. It was all about the hit on him, and the spotlight was his this episode. Of course, this show does provide great balance with the characters, but he stole the show.

I do think Erin made a tiny bit of progress, and here's why: Erin going to Voight, telling him that he is her family, will help her let go of the past and start over (as much as she can). Voight may be her family, but her mom will always be her mom. I definitely don't think we've seen the last of Momma Lindsay.

Love Olinsky, love Platt and Nadia (Amy Morton is such a scene-stealer!), one big question I still have is, when will we see some sort of resolve with Antonio and his family?

  5. I like Chicago PD but I have one negative point with this show. Every episode, it's like the writers can't write anything until they write up a few people dead. It's like in every episode. At least 10 people will die in each episode. Like, come on. They can ease down on the deaths, because when they're too many deaths, it just becomes not meaningful anymore. I'm surprised that the Chicago population isn't shrinking down because of the too many deaths.

  6. There have been 509 Homicides in 2012 and 421 Homicides in 2013 in Chicago (DNAinfoChicago) .... so they are not that far off.

  7. I was so happy after I saw the promo for this episode but I agree with the rest. For a Jay centric episode it sure didn''t have enough Jay. I''m happy anytime we see Jay's fighting skills but it took him like 5 seconds to get that guy and after such a long car scene it just seemed to much of a quick resolve. I love him with Erin but I see them as end game, I think it is to fast to put them together now, I want to see more danger filled episodes for the 2, have them become best friends first and then more. Olinsky again was awesome, second time he had Jay's back. I must say the team did much better this time having Jay's back. That's the best part for me in any tv show.. the family they become and the relationship they build. Of course that only makes it worse when idiots writers decide to kill main characters just for drama (RIP Shay).

  8. That's a sad fact actually. But still, Chicago PD is not real life, they should ease down the deaths. This is actually one of the reasons why I stopped watching Heroes, because of the easy bloodshed.

  9. I know what you mean, I am also not very fond of it. I stop watching Justified because of the brutality. Unfortunately bloodshed sells theses days, the more the merrier. Luckily CPD is not a Cable show, otherwise it would be worse.

  10. Yeah, you made me think of Game of Thrones and at least True Blood.

  11. I would have to disagree and say the writers are actually superb. You can't kill a minor character and have it affect the team in a lasting way. This is a death that could be felt for the rest of the series. Fire is in its third season, and needed a major turning point. It almost seems wrong that Shay died, as she had so much story left. But that's life, sometimes it's cut too short.
