Chicago PD - Chicken, Dynamite, Chainsaw - Review

Guys, I was wrong. Last week was not a filler episode. This week was. This week, we were given a main storyline that I just couldn’t get into and subplots that will most definitely resurface in the near future. Sure, it was still a great episode. But instead of leaving the episode feeling excited about what just happened, I’m more excited for what’s to come. Alright, enough of that…

Alderman Becks, an acquaintance of Voight’s, comes to the team for help when his daughter and her friend disappear. It was only a matter of time before a crime show featured an episode about an Uber drive gone wrong.

They find the abandoned car and the driver badly injured, and it’s clear something is up. Halstead and Lindsay go to visit the friend’s house to speak with the parents, who seem to be keeping something from the cops. Stay tuned…

The team gets a hit on a cell phone and arrive at the scene just in time to see Becks’ daughter go flying through the front window. Yikes.

The kidnappers do get away with the friend, but not before Antonio takes one of them out. It becomes apparent fairly quickly that this is more than just a simple kidnapping (is there such a thing?). This is some shady business gone wrong. All eyes are on Mr. Becks, when they should have been on the friend’s father. I knew it! He was involved in some deals gone wrong years before, and the people he burned returned to settle the score.

It may have seemed minor, but I loved the scene where Halstead and Olinsky visited the mother of the man Antonio killed (one of the kidnappers). They were looking for information regarding the kidnappers, which they got, but that’s not what I liked. On cop dramas, we see the “bad guys” as just that, bad guys. In this short scene, we were reminded that yes, he might have been bad, but he had a mother who loved him, a mother who is now dealing with losing a son. It was an interesting perspective that made me stop and think. Thank you, Chicago PD writers.

The information given by the mother combined with the friend’s dad leads the team to an abandoned school building. Mr. Becks shows up with cash, as he was contacted by the kidnappers. Halstead, using his amazing sniper skills, takes out the kidnapper, and the girl is fine. Another win for the team. I realize it’s a terrible thing to wish for, but just once, I want their mission to not be a success. Real life, people.

Elsewhere on the show…

Platt assigns Roman and Burgess to the handle the gun buyback booth. When Roman tells Burgess he has a private security business on the side, she says she’s free to help, but he brushes her off. I just want to know what his story is already! During an uneventful day working the buyback booth, Roman and Burgess recover a gun used in a homicide, their only excitement for the day.
In the locker room at the end of the night, Roman tells Antonio about his security business, and Antonio takes him up on the offer to work.

Halstead and Lindsay are up for mandatory firearms requalification. Flirty banter ensues (about who will score higher), and Platt interrupts with, “I’ve got my money on you, girl.” Apparently, Erin and Jay are just as clueless as we are with Platt’s obsession with Erin.

At the end of the episode, we do get to see Erin and Jay at the shooting range. “Do you think they’ll let me turn in Dwyer’s knee for requalification?” Jay asks.
Yes. Dang it! This scene was cut too short.

Antonio’s daughter shows up at the station, and seems to have some other purpose for being there, other than missing her dad. He puts Nadia in charge of his daughter, and I’ll admit, Nadia is growing on me. I was definitely opposed at the start of the season, but she really fits in well with this team.

I think there’s some other reason for Antonio’s daughter’s visit, but of course, it’s not revealed. I would guess that Antonio’s wife could be moving on, and judging by the episode’s final scene, Antonio may not be far behind.

In a surprising twist, a girl named Olive turns up at the station asking for Voight. She’s looking to get in touch with Justin (who is now enlisted in the military) to tell him that she’s—you guessed it—pregnant! I know some people have vocalized their dislike for Justin, but I actually really liked his character. I’m hoping this brings him back. At the very least, Voight’s going to be a grandpa! That’s terrifying.

Voight’s attitude toward Olive is so sweet, so different from the Voight we know. He has Olive over for dinner, and you just know he’s starting to get excited about being a grandpa. Guys, he even takes money out of his secret mystery vault to give her! He says Justin is coming back, yay! I hope we get to see quite a bit of him.

What did you think of the episode? How would you feel about a reappearance from Justin? Why is Platt obsessed with Erin? Share your thoughts below!

  1. I actually really liked the episode. In general, I'm more of a fan of standalone episodes than super-serialized tv (except in Agents of Shield, which feels really directionless without some larger arc to hold onto). I know that means I can't truly appreciate the "Golden Age", but I guess I like that standalone episodes show off each writer's unique style, while heavy serialization doesn't really allow that to come through as much since the writer's aren't plotting their own episodes or the characters' reactions to each plot development. That's just me though.
I love Platt's semi-obsession with Erin. I would have said she has a crush on her and doesn't know how to deal with it, but since they pounded Platt's straightness into us without a shadow of a doubt, their relationship is obviously something else. I kind of wish that Platt hadn't been made straight though. Her maybe-relationship with Mouch is really cute, but it would have been really cool to see an older butch lesbian on tv. Since she's straight, I see Erin and Platt's relationship as more of a mother-daughter or I-see-you-as-a-younger-version-of-myself type thing. It could also be that she roots for Lindsay and has a bit of a soft spot for her because she is the only woman who has made it to intelligence. I'm assuming the disrespects Kim partly because her patrol officer status allows allows Platt to give her crap, but also because it seems like she is throwing away all of the work that women did to break through glass ceilings in the past with her office(r) romance.
I didn't really like Nadia at first either, but I like that she's proving herself.

I really like this show. I find that the Kim scenario is really weird for the show, that is otherwise pretty hard hitting. Why does she feel the need to sleep with her colleague? It does not seem organic nor does it seem to fit the show.

  3. Yeah, it seems kind of out of place and strained, whereas the budding romance between Halstead and Lindsay seems more natural. The difference in ranking between Kim and Adam makes their relationship a bit more iffy for me as well.

    Agreed on Kim.
I was into Halstead and Lindsay but now I am off of them being together....they just all work to closely with one another for it to work in the show...without one of them having to leave the unit in the end.

  5. I agree on the Burgess part. I think Platt was starting to respect her because she was kicking butt, and then threw it away for romance. But, you never know.

I'm glad Nadia is proving herself, I'm liking her character more and more each week.

I have to say I am definitely a fan of serialized TV. Especially with this show, it gives it more depth. Not only do we have a case of the week, but we slowly learn more about who these characters are as individuals and as a unit.

  6. I think Burgess' relationship with Ruzek is not being handled correctly this season. Last season, there was definite chemistry between the two, but it's been missing this season. It might seem a bit more purposeful if the chemistry was there.

  7. The spark between Halstead and Lindsay is so natural, and I love it! I do think it will definitely be the "slow burn", will they won't they relationship of the series, but it's being handled well. They have their ups and downs, and I like that we see them as friends first.

I am not a fan of Burgess. To me she just comes off as desperate.

  9. Yeah, you're right. I like that the show is establishing their relationship as friends first before jumping right into the romance. It shows the audience how the characters work together and give us an idea of how they could work as a couple. Maybe that's one of the reasons that the Burgess/Ruzek relationship seemed so unnatural and unearned. Their romance just popped up immediately before the audience saw any other aspect of who they were to each other

  10. I agree on Burgess/Ruzek, what has been sweet in Season 1 is gone, now Rurek just seems to be horny. Burgess is also kind of used to introduce Roman as a character, and somehow the writers make her look silly, which she wasn't at all in Season 1

    ReplyDelete
  11. It was a good episode, I liked how they all worked together. The writers introduced Antonios storyline in the security business ( which is to last about 3 episodes I think) and put Voight again in the center for the next episode. Voight has been so ''straight'' the last episodes, that I am curios where they take us next week. I never liked Justin, so I hope he stays away for awhile.

I try to be open about Roman, but every episode I dislike him more. He comes off shady, but maybe it is just that he dislikes O, who is one of my favorites, and the way treats Burgess. The Burgess/Ruzek relationship needs a new direction, otherwise Burgess just looks bad and she doesn't deserves that.

Nadia fits in great, love her. Platt's love for Erin is starting to look silly, and has to be explained somehow - rather sooner than later please. I am still a Linstead fan, but the writers seem to take it really slow. Every show needs a bit of chemistry romance in it, otherwise it would be just a procedural cop show. And so far Chicago Pd has been proven to be better than that, I hope the writers are not too scared for Linstead.

  12. I like Burgess, she is just used to make look other characters better. Nobody ever complained about Ruzek behaving like a hormone driven teenagers. I hope Burgess kicks him to the curve soon.

I guess I should have also written - Not a fan of Ruzek either. The fact that he would prey on a woman, who clearly is into him (IMO more so then he is into her). Not cool for a guy to do. He seems to be using Burgess for his sexual urges, and waiting around for the next best thing.....unlike Burgess. SO yeah, not a fan of either at the moment. I hope that Burgess gets a man outside of the tightly knit group.

I suspect that Roman is Olinsky's son. He has tried to tell Olinsky something like a million times and has been unable. It is my hypothesis that it is that he is the mans son. But only time will tell on this front.

Oh yeah....totally forgot about Antonio. I think the guy is creepy. Straight up. He gets hired for a gig and falls in lust with the bosses girl. Creepy and cliched in my books.

  15. I don't trust the "pregnant" girlfriend at all. I get a stalker/crazy vibe from her. For someone as suspicious as Voight, he seemed to naively believe her, IMO.
I also don't like the direction Antonio is apparently headed and I especially didn't like the way he didn't give his daughter time to explain what was wrong. I believe the girl is in trouble and was scared. Either mom has a new scary boyfriend or something at school. Either way, his snapping at her and shutting her down forced her to keep her secret and that's going to come back to haunt him.
As for the new partner and his problem with Olinsky? I don't care. I don't like him and hope they don't plan on keeping him around long.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Olinsky's son? Too much soap opera drama, my guess is that O busted a friend of Roman in a shady activity.
Antonio is just a typical man in a midlife crisis, I guess we have to live through his struggle ... the treatment of his daughter was wrong but the smile at the woman just a typical male reaction from someone who thinks he is not treated right by his wife, imo.

  17. I totally agree on all of it. -:)

It was the line "you don't know who I am...." that led me down this path for Roman and Olinsky. I don't think it would be too bad, as it would lead us as viewers into Olinsky's backstory.

I get you on Antonio....but I am not a huge fan of this character. I also was not a fan on how he treated his daughter. One would think that he would have more time and patience given that she took the subway all the way to see him. Something serious must be up for her to have done that.

Roman is hot. So I'm not mad at him. He does seem stalker'ish....and seems to want more from Olinsky than what Olinsky seems ready to give or acknowledge.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Maybe, but I think unlikely. O has been portrait so far as ruthless undercover cop but who loves his daughter, never as a womanizer. It would be out of character to turn his back on his own kid. Roman is the creepy one, it seems that he is always holding back something, something does not seems to be right with him.

I also think Antonio did not treat his daughter the right way, but I guess that is part of the storyline. I still think the writers are going to fix Antonios marriage, just because he is the only one on the show who actually has one. I don't think the writers want to go down that path that no cop can have a happy family life.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I would have to agree, I don't think he is Olinsky's son. I can't wait for them to explore that more, as I do love Olinsky, and Roman is very intriguing.

I don't think his reaction to his daughter was wrong. If anyone knows how dangerous the city can be, it's Antonio. The thought of his daughter traveling alone through it had to be terrifying.

I love Antonio, and hope that his marriage can be resolved.

  22. She might be crazy, she definitely had those moments where that crossed my mind. I hope that they bring Justin back (who again, I loved) and that he either sets the record straight or confirms it.

I have to disagree on Roman, I like him. Yes, he is coming off as quite the jerk, but I trust these writers, so I know there is so much more to him. I'm going to reserve my judgment until I know a bit more about him.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Maybe I am to quick with my judgment on Roman, but Olinsky is one of my favorites and Roman hopefully changes his attitude soon otherwise my negative feeling prevails. I don't want Roman in Intelligence any time soon, Atwater has so far no real story line, I also rather see Burgess in Intelligence, so I hope the writers find a way, even though that means Ruzek/Burgess will be over.

IMO one of the strength of Chicago PD Season 1 was that the cast was small, smaller as Fire, which made it possible to give more time to each of the characters. I like Nadia - but they still have no replacement for Sheldon Jin which was a big loss, I liked him. He was different from the group of cops, Roman is just another version of the other cops, time will tell if good or bad.

  24. If Justin returns, that might not be good for Linstead fans. At least that happened in Season 1 Ep.7 when Erin had to choose between her loyalty to Voight or telling Jay the truth about Justin... whatever had been build up so far came to a stop then.

  25. Antonio DID apologize and Eva did say that she wanted to see him. She was probably just scared he and her mother were getting a divorce. Antonio even said "you heard some things" and she started crying. He reassured her that they are working things out.

    ReplyDelete
  26. They're still getting divorced.
