Sons Of Anarchy - Toil And Till - Review: "Old Sins"

17 Sept 2014

Sons Of Anarchy aired its second episode of its final season on Tuesday night. Episode 1, Black Widower, was a great introduction to the season last week as we learned Jax's new philosophy on life and where his journey is headed. He needs to get closure on the death of Tara and, to me, will believe anyone willing to offer up info on the matter. Gemma is a great liar, we all know, but we watch in anticipation for the moment when Jax figures out it was her who killed Tara and Juice knew all along.

To be honest, I never understood Jax wanting his MC to venture into more legitimate business dealings. That was how I felt watching the first few seasons. I kept anticipating him to go off the rails after realizing that goal was too difficult to continuously reach for. That's what I thought, at least. However, with Season 7 underway, we see Jax forgetting all that he has worked so hard for and is only out for revenge, searching desperately for Tara's killer and the truth about what happened that fateful day. He is not thinking clearly and, as a result, keeps putting the MC in more dangerous positions, waging a war on the Chinese one henchman and one drug deal at a time. This is all very uncharacteristic for Jax, who always seemed to have all the right answers, never making mistakes. Maybe killing off Tara, at the end of last season, was a little premature as she was mostly Jax's compass for a more righteous life.

The episode continues the Son's tradition of great action sequences. Paired with some heavy music the chase scene with Jax in the truck was one of the best scenes of the season so far. I'm wondering how many more times Jax and the MC can push the limit of attacking the Chinese gangs operations and men without getting caught. This is definitely a great arc to start the final season and it is only going to get more interesting as the series reaches its inevitable end.

Now that we know Jax's complete plan, we have to think of how other factors will come into play. When will Jax find out about what Gemma did? How will he react? Where will Juice go and will it be possible to escape Charming without Jax finding him first? We know that Tara and Jax never were able to leave and something tells me that Juice will not make it out of Charming alive.

For now, this season appears to be about Jax and his MC seeking to avenge Tara's death and seek the truth involving that tragic event at his home. This episode reveals a little more about Jax's overall plan, which is wider in scope than we originally thought. As great as I envisioned the season was going to be after watching the premiere last Tuesday, after hearing Jax's complete intentions, made it exponentially better. The music this season also makes a large impact, so keep an ear open for all the great song selections Sutter has incorporated into the series.

Thoughts and Discussion

- I would love to read what everyone thinks will happen when Jax finds out the truth about what Gemma did.

- Will Juice be able to leave Charming alive? Will Jax be the one to get to him first?

- What is Unser planning to do with his new position as 'consulting investigator'. Will he play his old role of being an inside man on the Charming PD or will he be more legitimate?

  1. Great review. It's been a great start to the season. I have no idea how this will all end!

  3. Really good start to the season and enjoyed your review George.

  4. I think once he learns the truth, it will break him especially when he realizes what he has unleashed because of Gemma's lie. It won't be something he can simply undo. This could result in the downfall of SAMCRO.

  5. Good review. I agree with you. After watching this second episode, I'm looking forward to the rest of the season more than before. So far, the SOA final season is shaping up better than the final seasons of Dexter and True Blood.

  7. You're right. It could be there downfall and now I'm wondering how far Jax will have gone until he finds out what he is doing is based on a lie. i.e., will he take out the whole gang, then have Gemma come in and say, "Uhhhh, yeahhhh, about that whole Tara thing...". Lol, I know it won't go that way, but you understand what I mean, right? Lol

  8. Thank you!

Completely agree with you about that! The few extra episodes I have seen are great as well so it's looking like this might be my favorite season of SOA.

On a side note, True Blood started out really well in its last season, but fizzled out. What a shame.

  10. Let's hope SOA doesn't fizzle out too.

  11. I think they have done such a great job with the series that all they would need to do at this point is create a satisfying conclusion to Jax and the MC for the finale.

  12. I was curious what your thoughts are about Marcus advising Jax on revenge. That business comes first and revenge will come soon. I felt that was a clue. I felt at that moment that Marcus knows Jax set up Pope. That Marcus will avenge Pope's death but is waiting for the appropriate time. He needs Jax's help with the Irish and to assist in the transition with the Mexicans/Chinese. I really felt that Marcus was talking about Jax when he was explaining the need for patience on revenge. Last season, Jax sent Tiggs on an errand. Then Jax provided the address to Marcus. We see on the camera Tiggs face when he sees Marcus walking in holding the paper with Jax's directions to Tiggs location in his hand. Later we see Jax's startled face when he sees Tiggs alive. I feel that Tigg did a side deal with Marcus. He revealed to Marcus that Jax was the master plan behind it all and that Clay did not kill Pope. Then there is another scene where Marcus shows with his crew to meet with Jax and the camera shifts to Tiggs face. Tigg looks uncomfortable. At that moment I thought Tigg has a side deal with Marcus. I am understanding why Tigg would do that, he was being set up by Jax. What are your feelings about this? Thanks.

  13. I would just hate for the season to be later ridden with contrivances, convoluted storylines, and some subplots that end up going nowhere which have been common flaws of certain SOA seasons in the past (ex. Season 4).

  14. The guy is completely out of control and lost. He was supposed to be smarter but grief and feelings of vengeance have consumed him. Gemma is of course responsible for the whole mess, but still don't think he is going to do anything about it when he finds out. I don't like how dark it's gonna get, and the fact Jax, is putting his entire family in danger. There's no going back now, things will end badly for everyone. especially for the club.

  15. That is a really good theory about Tigg. I also thought the same thing about Marcus's little speech to Jax about Patience and Revenge and possibly has something in store for Jax. I think the 'old' Jax would be able to see something like that coming, but his whole revenge kick he is on is clouding his judgement.
I know the scene you are referring to and I do think there is something going on with Tigg and Marcus, but can't figure it out yet. Another part of me just wants to believe that Tigg is just uncomfortable because the past experience with his crew and Pope and that there is nothing sinister going on in the background because Tigg would never do something like that to Jax regardless of what he knows.

I think we will know more given a few more episodes. Sutter tends to produce chilling scenes early on rather than waiting for the end of seasons like other shows, so I think we will see some revelations soon, don't you think?

Good eye on that scene, btw!

  16. An appropriate way to the end the season, yes, but I understand what you mean about something 'happier'. However, I don't think we will get 'happier', Lol. Know what I mean? It will definitely be darker.
