Sons Of Anarchy - Black Widower - Review: "The Journey Ahead"

Sons Of Anarchy aired its seventh season premiere on Tuesday and was the night's top cable program with a series' high 3.2 in the adult demographic. Anarchy Afterword, the show produced to discuss the SOA premiere, was the second most watched show on cable that night with a 1.4. I imagine SOA will continue to dominate Tuesday night, as this is the final season bringing Jax's story to a close.

The seventh season premiere begins a short while after the wild ending of season six. If you recall (spoilers if you don't recall), Jax walked into his kitchen, late at night, to find Roosevelt and his wife Tara dead on the floor. Unknown to Jax, is that Gemma is the one who killed Tara and Juice killed Roosevelt to protect Gemma. Law enforcement had no leads as to who could have committed the crimes. Just prior to these events, Jax agreed to serve a stint in prison, which is where we find him at the beginning of the season.

One of the elements I enjoyed about the seventh season premiere is that we don't have to wait long for the action to kick into gear and the story to unfold. Creator Kurt Sutter wastes no time in getting the MC together and taking care of business, which is all Jax has had on his mind. He is determined to avenge Tara's death and his attitude towards life in general makes the series appear completely different. He is in full vengeance mode. It will also be interesting to see who will solve the murder of Tara and Sheriff Eli first. The stage for season seven is set very early on and I love the new direction the show is taking, while still appearing to maintain its roots.

My favorite parts of the episode were the music montages. They have always been exceptional in SOA and it appears season seven is will continue that tradition. "Never My Love" (feat. Billy Valentine) by Audra Mae & The Forest Rangers is the song playing at the beginning of the episode over scenes showing us the current whereabouts of all the characters. Bohemian Rhapsody by The Forrest Rangers Played during the closing sequence.

One thing of note was the looks on the faces of the other MC members as Jax was torturing the man he suspected of killing Tara. It looked as if they were afraid of the new Jax or didn't know what was going through his mind. Even Happy, who to me seems the craziest, appeared confused by Jax's new take on life. I suppose it is understandable, given what Jax has lost, but his character seems to have given up any care in the world he once had. It is because of this that I think this season will be the best of the entire series.

Before, we had an MC that was driven by trying to get out business that would put them in any kind of danger. Now, we have an MC that is being lead by someone who is out for vengeance. He may think he has Tara's killer, but will we do when he finds out the truth? What will he do when he finally finds Juice, who now has Unser? The mysteries surrounding Jax and the MC's world will make this season a great final chapter fo our favorite motorcycle gang.

Thoughts and Discussion

- I actually like Marilyn Manson's acting. I hope we get to see more of his character.

- Did you notice...For all the fans of Boardwalk Empire, that was Ivo Nandi, who plays Joe Masseria, as a Mayan.

- There is something so cool about seeing the MC sitting around the table, with the SAMCRO logo etched in the middle, for a meeting. It's been a long nine months. I would love to have a game room at my house with that table in it right up next to Stannis' table depicting Westeros.

- I can already tell the music this season is going to be incredible. Keep an eye out for the montages.

- What do you think Jax will do to Gemma when he finds out the truth about her and Tara? What do you think Jax will do to Juice?
