-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Monday 9/16/13:

———-

Note: The following labels are based on the household overnights and are subject to change given the availability of other pending data streams. As always, these overnights are your first look at the ratings and a precursor to what could lie ahead. And we take into account other benchmarks including the expected demographic ratings, potential DVR usage, the critical acclaim (or lack of) and the social media presence.

-Winners:
“Dancing With the Stars” Results Show (ABC), “Big Brother” (CBS), “America’s Got Talent” (NBC)

-Losers (excluding repeats):
“Utopia” (Fox), “New Girl” (Fox), “The Mindy Project” (Fox), “20/20” (ABC)

———-

-Ratings Breakdown:
Two more hours of “America’s Got Talent,” which concludes for the season tonight, led NBC to an easy Tuesday night overnight household victory. “AGT” rose to its best overnight performance since July 1, with a 7.1 rating/12 share from 9-11 p.m. And it built from one week earlier (6.2/10 on Sept. 9) by 15 percent.

Earlier in the evening on NBC was an encore of “AGT” at a third-place 3.3/ 6 from 8-9 p.m.

In season-premiere news, Fox comedies “New Girl” (season four) and “The Mindy Project” (season three) did not benefit out of anemic “Utopia.” This second Tuesday 8 p.m. telecast of “Utopia” finished fourth in the hour with a mere 1.9/ 3, which was one-tenth of a rating point (or five percent) below its already DOA 2.0/ 3 one week earlier. And that abysmal 2.0 overnight household rating translated into 2.48 million viewers and a 0.9 rating/3 share among adults 18-49 (based on the Live + Plus Same Day data). Comparably, “Utopia” slipped by a hefty 57 percent from the average 4.4/ 7 for the debuts of sitcoms “Dads” (4.2/ 7 on 9/17/13) and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” (4.6/ 7) on the year-ago evening.

With competing “NCIS” returning on CBS next week, that 0.9 could end up a 0.6 or a 0.7. And Fox will need to address “Utopia” in the very near future. Tick, tock…that cancellation clock is ticking.

With minimal lead-in support, Fox’s “New Girl” opened with a distant third-place 2.3/ 4 in the overnights in the 9 p.m. half-hour, which was a considerable 41 percent below the 3.9/ 6 for the season-opener on the year-ago evening. And a 2.0/ 3 for the return of “The Mindy Project” at 9:30 p.m. (#3) was 33 percent below the 3.0/ 5 season-premiere one year earlier. Obviously, lead-in still does matter and “Utopia” is just not delivering.

Tops in the 8 p.m. hour was the live “Dancing With the Stars” Results Show on ABC at an 8.6/14, which was double the overnight household rating of summer favorite “Big Brother” on CBS (4.3/ 7). But “Big Brother,” which was on par from one week earlier (translating into a 2.3 rating/8 share among adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data), should have no trouble winning the time period in all key young adult demos. Keep in mind that this “Dancing With the Stars” Tuesday results show was one time only (unless, of course, upcoming sitcoms “Selfie” and “Manhattan Love Story” tank).

Next on ABC was an encore telecast of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” (#4: 2.1/ 3 at 9 p.m.), which is unlikely to pick up steam in the Tuesday 9 p.m. hour (out of unproven “Manhattan Love Story”) in the upcoming season, and a Tuesday 10 p.m. edition of “20/20” (#3: 2.6/ 4), themed “Relationships From Hell: A Downhill Slope”).

Elsewhere, repeats of CBS dramas “NCIS: Los Angeles” (#2: 3.7/ 6 at 9 p.m.) and “Person of Interest” (#2: 2.9/ 5 at 10 p.m.) aired out of aforementioned “Big Brother.” And The CW populated the evening with encores of “Arrow” (#5: 0.8/ 1) and “Supernatural” (#%; 0.6/ 1).

  3. I love this. I tune in everyday for the ratings.
Does that make me odd lol

  4. Pretty poor for TMP and New Girl. Doubt FOX will give TMP a back order.

  5. No, it doesn't. I do too!

    Shhhhhhhhh!

  7. And so it has begun... OMG The Mindy Peoject was awesome it even trended worldwide on twitter. I hope it's popularity in social media and dvr helps get it more episodes!!!

    Marc is back.

  9. The season hasn't even started and Marc is already using words like "abysmal" and "anemic" to insult new shows. He needs to get laid.

    I missed this.

  10. Ouch for New Girl and Mindy Project. Since New Girl will be at 95 episodes by the end of its run and owned by FOX, I think it can snag a fifth and final season just to get over 100 episodes. Plus, MTV and TBS have picked it up for syndication for next year. The Mindy Project, on the other hand, better be praying that it retained almost all of New Girl's audience, because if it does not, it could be headed to cancellation. Plus, TMP's disavantage is that FOX doesn't own it. #PoorMindyProject

  11. And is Marc WRONG for using those words to describe Utopia? FOX made a $50MM gamble while throwing away promising series like "Almost Human," tossing off still potent "American Dad!" to TBS, etc. Sorry but those words describe that flop accurately.

  12. Ouch New Girl... it seems like it lost its last chance to grab some new viewers.... will this be the final season? Seems likely; either this or the next one

  13. Great comment.

  14. Fox made deals for several new comedy pilots over the past month. If Mindy is DOA, they can let it run out its 15 episodes -- perhaps with another hiatus thrown in -- and in 2015 put something on that isn't even on the radar yet.

I love Will Forte, but I don't have much hope for Weird Loners. Any show ordered by Kevin Reilly is damaged goods under the new Fox regime.

  15. No no, he's not wrong at all, Utopia is proving to be quite a bad investment for FOX. I completely agree with you.
I read other ratings reviews online and Marc's choice of words never ceases to surprise me.

  16. I find it hilarious how random Marc hates tv shows. It's funny when he hates one show and tries to make it seems like it's doing awful while another show with similar ratings it's always "decent", "stable", etc.
His hate for Supernatural is legendary lol.

    ReplyDelete
  17. New Girl a little above its spring ratings, but still not good for a premire, and much less considering it had a lack of competition. It's not looking good

    ReplyDelete
  18. But at least it improved from its lead-in.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Will Forte is in The Last Man on Earth. Zachary Knighton, who played Dave on Happy Endings is on Weird Loners.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Utopia seems to have gained a tenth from last week but it still seems to be despised by critics. Even John de Mol, creator of the original Dutch Utopia, was negative about it.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yeah, that's something

    ReplyDelete
  22. You're right. Still, any Reilly-developed show is damaged goods.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Pretty bad for TMP and New Girl. FOX is in deep trouble.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Fox better pray to god that Red Band Society does well tonight because FOX is in serious trouble this year. Their only success this year (2014) was Masterchef and to some extent, 24: LAD.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I remember him almost ignoring Supernatural when it was up and making such a big deal when it was down. lol
I honestly can't wait to read what he has to say on "The Mysteries of Laura" tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  26. My first predictions about renewal chances for the 2015-2016 television season:
First Utopia won't make it to the World Series. Fox will wait to see how their other new shows fare before pulling Utopia. Gotham might do well at least for its premiere despite being in a brutal time slot.
The Mindy Project didn't do better than its season finale (1.3). TMP will likely drop to a 0.8 sometime this season. That should be a signal to the actors to start looking for new jobs.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Marc's comments are nothing compared to the comment section in tvbythenumbers. There, posters act even more desperate, overreact and everything is a FLOP in their eyes.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I love the comment section in tvbynumbers. Except for some crazy haters and amusing trolls that comment section is fine. Also there are some pretty hilarious posters that hate one show for unknown reasons and always try to spin its ratings to make the show look bad lol. It always comes out as lame and desperate.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Poor New Girl and Mindy. I really hope Sleepy Hollow and Bones do better than that.

    ReplyDelete
  30. So sad for The Mindy Project and New Girl...

    ReplyDelete
  31. Shoot I forgot new programming last night. I am going to have to pay attention

    ReplyDelete
  32. I really, really hope too.
