NCIS: Los Angeles - Deep Trouble Part 2 - Review: "Deep Satisfaction"

30 Sept 2014

The conclusion to last season’s cliffhanger finale of “NCIS: Los Angeles” was worth the wait. The premiere of season six, “Deep Trouble Part 2,” was an exciting ride. And that says a lot since there was really no question whether Sam and Callen would make it out of the submarine. Viewers knew the two main characters wouldn’t die so the outcome was a given. But the fall premiere still managed to thrill, entertain and tug at the heartstrings. Fantastic dialogue and interaction filled the episode; the characters were fun to watch and many of the scenes left you laughing out loud. It was the perfect way to start off the new season.

“Deep Trouble Part 2” begins right where the finale ended. Kensi and Deeks are panicked when they realize the submarine has left and Sam and Callen are stuck inside without any outside communication. But if anyone has to be stuck in a sub, it’s these two. They immediately start making plans of their own and it doesn’t take long before Sam’s brilliance shines through. Seriously, if I were in trouble, this is the man I would want with me figuring things out! Sam is a lot more technical than I realized. He is a math and science genius. He confirms he was a “mathlete” in school. Though Callen teases him, his skills and expertise come in very handy. From trying to determine where they are in the ocean to calculating how long their oxygen will last, Sam’s knowledge is a valuable asset.

Their partner dynamics also cracked me up. While Sam was stressed out – you could almost see his sweat beading and his mind working overtime – Callen appeared fearless. It was almost as if he wasn’t worried about what would happen. At one point Sam told Callen, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you this excited about a suicide plan,” and he did seem to be relishing the challenge. Callen treated the situation with humor and lightheartedness, which made it amusing to watch. In fact he reminded me a lot of Sam – confident and fearless. In a way I felt like the two almost traded roles in this episode: Sam became the practical one and Callen plowed ahead confidently, not worrying about a negative outcome. It was fun to see them take on each other’s characteristics and the humor made it even more enjoyable. In the midst of their predicament Callen’s jokes annoyed Sam but also kept the mood light and their attitude positive. The balance was great. They both knew they had to stop the sub from blowing up a Navy warship in San Diego, which might mean giving their lives, but they weren’t about to give up easily. When Sam was preparing for the worst and writing a letter to his family, Callen emphasized to him that they weren’t going to die. It was this teamwork, camaraderie and encouragement that kept them both going.

In the meantime, Hetty has learned what’s going on and has threatened the driver who is escorting her to Washington DC that she might use a lipstick gun on him if he doesn’t turn around. (Hilarious!) But the threat works and she heads back to Ops. It was great to see Hetty back with the team. She cares about them too much to not help them in a dangerous situation. So her Washington troubles are put on hold for now.

As Kensi and Deeks frantically try to help their friends, the characters both have some great moments in this episode – together and separately. There is obviously still a “turf war” going on between Kensi and Talia. Kensi doesn’t want Talia to be alone with Deeks, so she steps in to work with Talia instead. That leaves Deeks on his own, interrogating a suspect in the hospital with ties to the submarine drug shipment. These scenes were hilarious. Deeks questioned the man about calling cops “pigs,” he talked about how girls dig NCIS employees, he lied and told the man he was going to die and then he taunted him with fake alcohol. I love Deeks! He just has this carefree, laid-back, charming, nothing-to-lose, know-it-all attitude that is so fun to watch. In the end he gets the information he needs out of the man.

Left to themselves, the girls can’t help but continue their catfight. The last one they had seemed silly and unbelievable and inconsistent with their characters, albeit kind of fun. But this time, despite a few cheesy lines, I thought the scene was much more plausible. Maybe it’s because Kensi wasn’t as goofy in her jealousy. Instead of flaunting her physical assets and acting jealous and insecure around Deeks, she acted self-assured and territorial. She displayed toughness with a “back off” attitude that stayed true to her character. And it made it more interesting to watch. This time around Kensi was secure enough with whatever has happened between her and Deeks to not act threatened by Talia. She still didn’t like Talia telling her what to do with Deeks. But she had no control over that. Talia clearly knew something was going on with them and wanted to get under Kensi’s skin. Her goal worked.

I think I gasped when Kensi head-butted Talia. I wasn’t expecting them to get physical and thought it was pretty funny that Kensi chose to respond to Talia’s threats by butting her in the head. It was one of those scenes that made me think to myself, “Oh, no she didn’t!” while secretly cheering. I have to say, I really liked this scene – it was one of my favorites in the episode. Of course, Talia dished it right back by punching Kensi, leaving Kensi with a bloody lip. Not only did the girl fight surprise me, which I love, but it solidified Kensi’s toughness and fearlessness. Just like she doesn’t let bad guys get away with anything, Kensi is also not going to let Talia get away with encroaching on her relationship with Deeks.

But just when you thought the women were never going to get along, they realize that the submarine is going to be used as a bomb and then kick into gear to save Sam and Callen. When we next see them together they are suddenly friends, a transition I found a little bit odd. They went from hating each other to working together to suddenly being good friends. I almost felt like there was a scene missing in between – but it didn’t really bother me because leaving Deeks on the outside of the triangle was such a comical development. It was fun to watch Kensi and Talia gang up against Deeks with their inside jokes and secrets. Suddenly Deeks goes from being the one they were fighting over to the one they are laughing at together, which he clearly doesn’t like. After they make fun of him and high-five each other in the car, it was funny to watch Deeks stammer and stutter around: “No, no. What’s that? I don’t like this – I don’t like that, not at all, not one bit!” And then he opens himself up to ridicule when he asks Kensi if he is missing something and Kensi replies, “Yes – it’s called a cerebral cortex.” Slam! I love it when these two make fun of each other.

And there was no shortage of that in this episode, thanks to their short undercover scene posing as an engaged couple. I loved how Deeks couldn’t resist making fun of Kensi and harassing her as they talked to the Chinese woman at the restaurant where the sub’s drugs were being hidden and cut. Deeks just can’t stop himself. He embarrasses Kensi by first saying she asked him to marry her, and then admitting her sister turned him down and she was the second-place trophy wife. It was so funny. He had Kensi squirming. And then suddenly it turns serious and sweet when the woman says Kensi will make a beautiful bride and Deeks agrees. I love how the writers find small ways in the midst of joking around to throw in these sweet moments. While Kensi doesn’t know how to react to the comment, the scene affirmed that these two partners still have “it.” Their connection and the way they make fun of each other comprise the core of their charm.

After finding the drugs, the NCIS team has a new worry – the Navy plans to destroy the submarine. So Granger arranges for Kensi and Deeks to scour the scene from a helicopter. As they’re doing that, the water in the sub (that Sam and Callen let in to flood it) has filled so much of the hatch that the bad guys have to open the door to pump the water out – and that means a shootout with Sam and Callen. But the two partners are prepared and end up victorious in the gun battle. As the sub floods, they have to make their escape. Again, Sam’s spectacular science knowledge comes into play as he tells Callen they have to scream all the way to the surface or the air will expand and explode their lungs. I love how Callen just laughed at this.

By the time the Navy sends a torpedo to blow up the sub, the NCIS team all looked so sad that I almost teared up, even knowing they were going to be fine. When Kensi and Deeks see the foamy ring from the underwater explosion, they think their friends are dead. In that moment, Deeks doesn't even think twice - he grabs Kensi's arm and their hands slip right into one another's. It was a seamless, natural gesture of comfort that affirmed both their mutual support and affection for one another. When something goes wrong, these two are always there for each other - they have learned to depend on one another. And when they don't stop to think about it, their closeness becomes almost an instinctive reflex.

Fortunately for us, though, Kensi and Deeks' fears do not come true. Sam and Callen make it to the surface and have a funny banter about their predicament in the middle of the ocean. And then my emotions got the best of me. When Kensi and Deeks spotted them in the ocean and told the rest of the team they’d been found, it was a great moment that showed how much they all care about each other.

As the episode ends, Hetty advises Granger that he should tell Washington the truth. Hetty is still in hot water. It will be interesting to see what happens to her next. While she contemplates her future, the rest of the team celebrate their big win. Deeks (calling Eric and Nell the “nerd herd”) brings them all a “depth charge” drink – a smaller shot of alcohol dropped into a larger glass of beer. The name of the drink (and the effect that happens when they drop in the alcohol) mimics the underwater submarine “depth charge” explosion that Sam and Callen just escaped. As they all take in the intended irony, they toast to friends and partners: a fitting ending for the great relationships that have come to define this show.

Great quotes:

Granger: “What the hell was that?”
Nell: “It’s Hetty.”
Granger: “Where is she?”
Eric: “Everywhere.”
Granger: “Well, turn her off.”

Hetty: “I have a lipstick gun in my purse and I’m not afraid to use it.”

Deeks: “I’m a detective with LAPD.”
Mr. Wilson: “I hate pigs.”
Deeks: “But apparently love nostalgia. Seriously, who calls cops pigs anymore?”

Deeks: “I’m currently assigned to NCIS – Naval Criminal Investigative Services. You heard of it? No? No? Well, we’re pretty cool. Chicks dig us, which is awesome!”

Talia: “I’m not trying to poach your boyfriend.”
Kensi: “Deeks is not my boyfriend – he’s my partner.”
Talia: “My God, you guys are both in denial. No wonder you’re wired so tight.”
Kensi: “You can shut up any second now.”
Talia: “You know, if I were you, I would just go for it – have a full-on freak-fest weekend, get it out of your system before you blow an O-ring or something.”
Kensi: “No wonder you like him – you both talk like idiots.”
Talia: “Careful, honey. Don’t let all that pent-up sexual frustration force you to say something you’re going to regret.”
Kensi: “You need to step off.”
Talia: “You need to let that boy under your hood for a little oil change – before somebody else does.”
Kensi: “Is that a threat?”
Talia: “No, that’s a fact.”
Kensi: “Well here’s a threat – stay away from my partner.”
Talia: “That’s a warning. ‘Get out of my face before I break that pretty nose of yours.’ That’s a threat.”

Mr. Wilson: “I refuse to die.”
Deeks: “I refuse to grow up. Actually, that’s working out pretty well for me.”

Sam: “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you this excited about a suicide plan.”

Sam: “I’m writing a letter to Michelle and the kids.”
Callen: “We’re getting out of here, Sam.”
Sam: “In case we don’t.”
Callen: “Well, tell her I died saving your life, will you?”
Sam: “You’re joking about a letter my family’s going to read after I’m dead?”
Callen: “Too soon?”
Sam: “What’s wrong with you?”
Callen: “Never heard of black humor?”

Deeks: “Am I missing something?”
Kensi: “Yes – it’s called a cerebral cortex.”

Kensi: “We’re getting married.”
Chinese lady: “Congratulations.”
Deeks: “Thank you. To be completely honest, I thought she’d never ask.”
Kensi: “He’s kidding – he’s a kidder.”
Deeks: “Guilty as charged. I asked her – but only after her sister turned me down.”
Kensi: “Will you stop it? She’s going to think you’re serious!”
Deeks: “It’s not as bad as it sounds, Madge. They’re identical twins and you can only marry one at a time in this state – and I wanted a trophy wife. So second place it is. Second place!”
Chinese lady: “You’re going to make a beautiful bride.”
Deeks: “I agree.”

Callen: “I like it when a plan comes together. I think that’s where you say, ‘I pity the fool that messes with me.’”
Sam: “I’m starting to think I would have been better off with Deeks.”

Sam: “All that muscle mass takes up a lot of oxygen. If we get out of here, you might want to think about taking up Pilates.”
Sam: “How about you stop talking and conserve air?”

Sam: “You still thinking about getting that boat?”
Callen: “You think that’s funny?”
Sam: “It’s pretty funny.”
Callen: “You remember to grab your car keys back there?”
Sam: “Son of a bitch!”
Callen: “Looks like we’re swimming home and walking home!”

Deeks: “So how are my little mermaids?”

  1. As much as people...complain (I had a much more colorful word to describe it) about the Talia and Kensi rivalry, I'm pretty sure Talia has done more to push Densi together in two episodes than anything else in the series up to that point.

I think Deeks needed to see how Kensi reacts to someone showing an interest in him, and I think Kensi needed to see that his feelings for her haven’t changed.

  2. I'm happy to have the show back. Although I'm a Deeks fan first, Sam and Callen were pretty awesome tonight. Kensi is getting on my nerves, I just don t understand what she wants. Previous seasons she accused Deeks of not telling her how he feels ab her even though she never expressed herself in that regard either. When he finally kissed her she looked shocked like it came out of no where. Now she acts all jealous and stupid with Talia. Don t get me wrong I love it when she gets all territorial and protective on Deeks but I don t see Talia as a threat. And it annoys me that Kensie doesn t make up her freaking mind. If her and Deeks are just partners what's her biff with Talia? if she wants more with him, than act on it and tell him, make it official. She can t keep pushing away the ideea of them as a couple but act all girlfriendly at the same time. I'm having TIVA deja vu and it's killing my love for this couple.

  3. That was a very enjoyable read, thank you Tonya. Enjoyed the episode although was sad to see that the ratings were down :(

  4. I really enjoyed the episode. The scenes with Sam and Callen were great. I loved the humor and their never give up attitudes.

I realize that a lot of people wanted to see a little Kensie/Talia rivalry over Deeks but I thought the actual cat fight was definitely over the top. (Sorry, Tonya.) Two professional women on a case smashing each other in the face over a man is definitely not what I was looking for on the show. That kind of behavior I expect from a show about teenagers. They should have kept it verbal.

I agree with what you said about Sam's great science knowledge but I think Callen can keep up in that dept. I noticed when Sam was giving the formulas Callen blurted out the answer before him. And he also came up with a few suggestions himself. They balance each other out nicely.

Poor Hetty almost looked like she was going to cry when they thought they'd lost them. That's the most emotion I've seen from her in a while. I can't wait to see what happens with her next week too.

  5. Kensi and Talia becoming friends with such a quick turnaround made no sense and it ruined the entire episode for me.

  6. I agree with you. Kensi is an adult not a 15 year old girl and Talia
    was worse.

  7. I don't agree. Monica is the one that forced both of them to admit they felt anything. Until that happened this was going 10 years of nothing.Talia IMO did not do anything but act like a teenage bimbo and push Kensi down to her level. The kiss, the night together and the relationship discussions ALL happened before Talia got there. Kensi didn't even meet Talia until the last episode of season 5 if I remember correctly and everything happened before that. These 2 are still not together.

  8. It should be noted that the aircraft carrier the submarine was targeting (U.S.S. Van Buren) was the same one the team was sent to covertly investigate the murder of NCIS Special Agent on board in Season 4 (Episode #10 - Free Ride).

I know what you mean. Talia didn't end up coming between Deeks and Kensi and the jealousy she inspired in Kensi might just emphasize to Deeks how much Kensi is still interested. Either it will help them or it was all just for amusement. But either way it definitely didn't hurt them. So I guess all the complaints (or other colorful words you'd use... ha ha) were not necessary in the end. Thanks for your perspective!

Yes, they were definitely on this path before Talia got there. You made me laugh when you said Talia did nothing but act like a teenage bimbo and push Kensi down to her level. I agree with you that she did do that. Ha ha. But I would say it's possible she also gave the two a little "nudge" by sort of forcing Kensi's hand around Deeks - though it may or may not end up being much of a nudge. Admittedly Deeks kind of already knew her hand. So I guess only time will tell. Thanks for your comments.

You're right - how could I?!! (Love the tumblr gif!) The funny thing was in the middle of my day today (I had a crazy day), all of the sudden I randomly thought to myself, "I totally forgot to mention the hand-holding scene in my review!" It was completely inadvertent as I had spent too much time writing and was trying to wrap it up as I was getting to the end of the episode and subsequently missed covering a great moment. Ahhhhhh! So sorry. I'm going to update my review and add it in! Can't miss that one! Thanks for the nudge in the right direction. :)

  14. Tonya Papanikolas1 October 2014 at 06:39

Ha ha - no need to apologize, bj. I could see how you wouldn't like their verbal fight getting physical. That is definite teenage behavior, no doubt about it. I actually almost included a line in my review about how even though I enjoyed it and it made me laugh, I wasn't condoning violent behavior. Lol. :) These two definitely weren't acting professionally here. But one thing I thought made it a little bit better (and maybe not for you) was the fact that Kensi started the physical fight over Talia getting in her face and threatening her, not actually over the Deeks comments. I thought that made more sense and would have made Kensi angrier than stupid comments about Deeks. But I still get where you are coming from!
You know - I think you're right about Callen keeping up with Sam in the knowledge department. He did swoop in with that math equation answer VERY quickly! I noticed that, too. They really did (and do) balance each other out so nicely!
Somehow I was focused on Nell in the scene with all of them getting emotional about Sam/Callen - so I missed some of Hetty's emotion. I'll have to go back and watch that scene again. And I can't wait to see what happens with her, too! Especially after the promo that is all about her!
Love to hear your thoughts. Thanks for discussing!

    Hello
Tonya, excellent Review as always. I have been commenting with you in the last
times how much anxious i am for the beginning
of the season 6 and the truth is that these 3 months without a new a episode was a
torture for me, but finally the new season began and I couldn’t be more
    happier.

    I love the
episode. I love de parts in which Sam and Callen are inside the sub and even
being there imprisoned, Callen are relaxed and make fun of the situation. I really
    like his personality.

    Now talking
about Densi and Talia, their scenes are very good, but such as you said in the
review after the scene of Kensi and Talia a scene is lacking, to explain what it happened in order they had
become friends so suddenly. I’m taking about what happen in the middle of
the scenes. Will it be that Kensi confessed for Talia that she is in love with
Deeks? I think that this is the only way of stopping Talia of provoking Kensi.
The cats began with the claws form the outside but with the time they shrugged
    them… ahahaahaah :D

    When Densi
was in the helicopter and they all were thinking that Callen and Sam had died,
it will be that I was the only who saw Densi hand in hand. SOOO CUTE!!!!

It is everything for now, BYEE :)

  19. Love it! I actually missed the hand grab the first time around. Thank goodness for next day gifs!

It was a fun episode, but compared to S4's finale and the premier of S5, Deep Trouble 1 & 2 lacked something to me. There just wasn't much on the line—we knew Sam and Callen would survive—and while I hate to beat a dead horse, it took away the tension that makes finales and season openers "zing."

That being said, Sam and Callen were really fun to watch. Their relationship is like a marriage—they balance each other out. The more worried Sam got over their situation, the more nonchalant Callen became. I enjoyed seeing Callen like that. It felt different, but I can't quite put my finger on it. Maybe I'm just not used to seeing Sam appear unsure of himself, so the contrast stood out.

You used the word "charming" to describe Deeks. Bullseye! That guy has got to be the most charming character on TV, and it's not just because he's adorable (although that helps). I loved how the teasing in the Chinese restaurant scene turned so suddenly to the sweetest two seconds of the entire show. That look he gave her... be still my heart!

The Kensi/Talia scene seemed a little too obvious. The thing that bothered me more than the head butt/right hook combo was Tania's tacky dialogue. It was icky, for lack of a better term, and I don't mean that in a prudish way. It was just lowbrow, which may have been the point, but still... It suddenly made badass Blye seem like Sandra Dee. Me no likey!

Speaking of all things Pollyanna, I found the subtle nod to a later time slot a little awkward/uncomfortable. I couldn't figure out what was bugging me, but then I realized it was when Sam used the word "bitch." Don't get me wrong—I use that term and much worse on a daily basis, but it seemed a little forced—as if the writers were saying, "See? We're so much edgier now. Watch us!" Of course, there have been many times in past episodes when I've said to myself, "That is so unrealistic. They totally would've said 'shit' in the real world," so the writers should never listen to me. It didn't seem awkward when Deeks said it, but I guess my standards for Sam are higher? (Jesus, why can't I put this much thought into the book I'm supposedly writing?)

I agree with you on the "missing scene" between Kensi and Talia. That was a really jarring transition—no explanation at all. Weird. (Although I did enjoy Deeks' response when the gals high-fived each other in the car. “No, no. What’s that?...")

Since I completely missed the hand-holding scene, I was tickled to discover it the next day in all its giffy glory. I melted! I loved what you said about it being almost an instinctive reflex. It was deliciously natural, and the way Kensi so surely entwined and grasped their fingers... I don't know, it just gave me warm fuzzies. :) See, writers? It doesn't take much to make the audience happy!!!

In news of the trivial: I was kind of bummed they didn't have a brand new opening. There were a few changes, but it would've been fun to see something shiny. I like shiny.

I am super bummed about the ratings. Why fix something if it ain't broke? I understand they want NCISNO to do well, but why should it be at the expense of an already successful show? I hate to be overly negative, but that's just dumb. I hope to be humbled later when it turns out to have been the greatest move ever, and NCISLA is back to its top ratings. Meanwhile, I worry for the future of our dear team.

  20. I LOVE Sam and Callen. Their scenes are always entertaining, and there's always a little intelligent humor to balance out the great action scenes.

I don't dislike the violent behavior in the show per se, as there's usually quite a bit of it. I object to the type of immature behavior that they seem to be adding lately to pull in the younger element. I get that many fans want Kensi and Deeks together, but they're not teemagers. Their frontal lobes are supposed to be fully developed. lol And I would imagine they would have to have great impulse control to do the job they do. Behind the scenes or off duty silliness is fine but on the job they have to be in control. And two female officers having a punch out in the street is ludicrous. (Yes, I know it's a tv show. lol but for me that crossed the line.)

I also love Nell and I can't wait to see the next few eps with her. I call her Mini Me as she really does seem to be Hetty's apprentice. I can't wait to see the two of them in action together.

Of course I want to answer - I love your comments sooo much! :) I always just have to make sure I have a good chunk of time to write my responses to you. ;) Lol. Yes, there really wasn't a lot on the line because we knew Sam and Callen would survive. So I can see how the episode would be lacking and not have that tension and "zing" for you. That makes sense!

Interesting to hear you say Sam and Callen's relationship is like a marriage where they balance each other out. You're the second person to say that in these very comments and it made me realize it's so true! I like how you point out that the more worried Sam got, the more nonchalant Callen became. Yes! It WAS Fun seeing Callen like that. It did feel different, right? I also couldn't quite put my finger on it but you may be right - Sam isn't usually unsure of himself, so maybe it was the contrast that made it more evident.

I knew you would love that moment in the Chinese restaurant when Deeks' teasing "charming" teasing turned so sweet! It WAS a great moment. Ahhhhh.

I also thought Talia's dialogue was tacky. Just immature and icky like you said. Kind of stupid. I like the thought it made "badass Blye like Sandra Dee." Lol!!

I hadn't noticed the subtle nod to a later time slot - that's so interesting! I'm going to watch now and see if I notice from here on out that they are trying to purposely be edgier. (The word "bitch" didn't bother me because I thought it was so funny in the context! Callen's line afterward WAS funny, wasn't it?!) But your initial impression is interesting. Hmmm. I think I agree with you about holding Sam to a higher standard than Deeks, though... Ha ha ha.

I was so happy to hear I wasn't the only one who felt that was a jarring transition (great way to put it!) to Kensi and Talia suddenly becoming friends. I was like, "Did I miss something?" (Deeks' response was classic, though!)

I could see how if you looked away for a second, you'd miss the hand-holding scene.I bet you WERE tickled to discover its giffy glory the next day! Ha ha. It was so fast, but so great, wasn't it?! Very well done, I thought. I melted, too! "Deliciously natural" is a great way to put it. Warm fuzzies indeed! Yep, it really doesn't take much to make us happy! ;) Even reliving how Kensi "entwined and grasped their fingers" gets me excited.

OMG I thought the same thing about the opening! I was expecting they would have a great new one, too! "Shiny" is good! I apparently also like (and expect) shiny. It's always kind of fun to see what new clips or pictures they add in to a new opening - and was also bummed when it didn't sparkle with newness. :)

Yes, ratings were a total bummer! They picked a tough night to move it to - with Castle and The Blacklist and Gotham, this is such a competitive night - the worst of the week, in my opinion. That sucks. I am also baffled at why Scorpion, which airs before NCISLA, is getting better numbers. It is not nearly as good. Its excitement and energy level has really fallen flat for me. Weird. I really think they were trying to help NCISNO and thought NCISLA could stand on its own. Which it can - but they're not helping it out much. Ugh. I hope it gains viewers every week and we don't have to worry!

Okay, that's it for me. By the way, I would totally read this book you're writing! That's so cool. Novel or non-fiction?

  24. I would say a huge majority of the fandom disliked Talia but some were happy she existed because she pushed Deeks and Kensi to be together but then the last scene where they toast as "partners" confused the heck out of me and now I don't know if that means they are not trying to be together anymore or are. In fact lets just say the entire episode confused the heck out of me and I literally have no clue what they were trying to do.lol

I love this show but so many parts of it angered me and the parts I liked were lead in by parts I really disliked so I haven't re-watched the episode in part of whole since the first airing. That is how annoyed I was with it all.

(example the car scene where Kensi and Talia whispered about Deeks led into the scene where they pretended to be married. Worst segway ever.

By the way I looked up how to spell segwat (segway) Segue? and got 3 different answers so excuse my spelling:)

  25. Let's face it. Eric is a bit of a wimp. He'd side with whoever is scaring him at the moment. lmao. I do love him though.

Nell is fearless and Hetty has great radar when it comes to scoping out who she can trust. Seeing them work together would indeed be phenomenal..

Ha ha. I hate to say it but I think it's true - he would probably side with whoever is scaring him at the moment. lmao also!!! And Nell is pretty fearless, isn't she? I love their mutual trust and respect!

Things are getting more and more confusing, aren't they?! I don't know what they're trying to do any more, either. Ha ha. Even though they toasted as partners, there was that scene where Deeks and Kensi held hands on the chopper when they thought Sam and Callen were dead. So I just thought as a group they were toasting to their partnerships and friendships. But who knows. I'm so sorry the season premiere annoyed you. I had several episodes like that last season and hated it! Now that you point it out, that was a weird segue/segway (the first is right, I believe - but I always thought the second was, so either works for me!) going from whispering about Deeks to pretending to be married. It didn't bother me watching it but I can see what you're saying.

  28. It was poorly written that is for sure and if the actors were attempting to portray something I missed it and both are amazing actors so I pretty much blame all confusion on the writers.

You didn't write the episode so no need to be sorry lol. I just wish the writers would clarify things because they pretty much confused everyone and no one seems to agree what they were trying to do.

I watch NCISLA for Deeks and Kensi but I don't know how much longer I can listen to Kensi call Deeks mean names. You just don't treat people you love that way.

This episode was filmed last season so I am attempting to consider it part of last season which a lot of people didn't like3. Hopefully the newest written episodes are a lot better.

I know - no one does agree on what the writers are doing. That says a lot! :) This episode didn't confuse me like last season. But I agree - I hope the newest written episodes are more clear! I hope they decide what they want to do and then stick with it! I also understand where you're coming from on Kensi calling Deeks names. I am one of those people whom it has never bothered (I actually kind of find her way of teasing him endearing) but I know other people who feel like you. :)

  30. I don't mind teasing but out right being mean and mocking him in favor of other people like Talia that is a whole different level

  31. Hi Tonya, I finally watched the season premiere and read your review. Just in time for the next episode, which I won't see tonight, ha, ha. I really enjoyed your review and the episode. It was a good storyline, and I liked the balance between suspension, dramatic action and comic relief, as usual. The only thing about the episode that felt really unrealistic was how fast Kensi and Talia went from punches to hugs. But I agree with you that the catfight this time felt more plausible. I was also surprised, but I thought it was awesome! It was fun, and definitely worth the wait...including my extra week.

  32. Hey! Gettin' ready to watch the next episode, so I thought I should respond to you before we go off on another thread. :) I just read the interview with ECO about tonight's episode—a little vague, but I CANNOT WAIT!

I'm sure you'll be overwhelmed with comments again, so I'll keep this brief:

You write the BEST reviews. I seriously love them! And the care with which you respond to the comments is first class. Someday I would love to have you as a panelist at my blogging event, BlogathonATX. I promise you'd have fun, and the attendees would LOVE you. Plus, Austin's a cool city, and I'm a cool chick. ;)

My book (if I ever get back to it) is going to be a graphic memoir based on my webcomic, CasaWeenie dot com. (Sometimes Disqus spams comments that include links, so I try not to do it too much.)

Okay, you're going to have enough to deal with once you write your next review, so I won't babble on. Talk to you soon!!

Nothing wrong with getting a little behind! That's why DVRs (and even computers) are so great! I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought it felt unrealistic for Kensi and Talia to go so quickly from punches to hugs! (Their fight was pretty fun! The surprise of it made it all the better!) Thanks for the comments. I think you'll enjoy the second episode, too, when you get around to watching it. :)

Thank you so much for your nice comments! I try to always be gracious in responding to comments because I've had people respond to comments I've left on other reviews and tell me I'm wrong - and it ticks me off! Ha ha. I figure people don't always agree but sometimes people see things differently and it's great to hear everyone's perspectives. : )
Your blogging event sounds awesome! I have been to Austin once and loved it and you're right - you're a cool chick so just getting to meet you would be the highlight! Thanks for thinking of me. I'm interested. So when it comes around again, let me know. :)
Your book sounds really cool. I have checked out your webcomic before and thought it was FANTASTIC! Your awesome humor comes through perfectly, not to mention your skilled artistic prowess! So I have no doubt your book will be just as great!!!

  35. Disqus is taunting you. Apparently you've offended it.

Speaking of offensive, ECO totally mislead us in his interviews! Where was that scene he mentioned? Hmmm....? There were some fun scenes on last night's episode, but I'm hoping next week will have a little more Densi romance (always the optimist).

BlogathonATX is coming up on October 25th, and we'll start planning the next one shortly after. I'll keep you posted!

Thanks for the nice words about my comics. As long as Mr. Weenie and I stay married, I'll never run out of material. :)

I didn't get a chance to read his interviews. What did he say was going to happen? I hate it when they mislead us!!
Densi romance would always be nice but I think I must have turned into a pessimist because I don't expect it or even go in hoping for it any more. :( I like that you're still the optimist about it. I actually think it's eventually going to happen but I really think they are taking their time and dragging things out. Here is to fingers crossed we will see a little romance next week! Here, here!
I hope your October BlogathonATX goes great! I'm sure it will. Sounds fun and I bet the planning is keeping you busy!
Glad you'll never run out of material for your comics but they're so fun! (And glad your husband has a sense of humor about it all!) ha ha.

Thanks for pulling the highlights for me! You're awesome! What's up with teasing a conversation that never airs? I'm curious if it will air in another episode since Kensi hasn't been interviewed yet or if the scene was deleted. Weird! I guess we will see next week. Looking forward to all the teasers. That's a good spoiler!!! Thanks.

  38. I've been told ECO confuses episodes sometimes, which is understandable with this one since it's a two-parter. I'm CONVINCED we're going to see some good Densi action next week. *fingers crossed - fingers crossed - fingers crossed*

  40. Given that I saw the dubbed version, did really Callen quote Hannibal Smith?

He actually quoted "Mr. T" from the A-Team, but yes. Pretty funny, right?
