Grey's Anatomy - Cristina Yang Tribute

17 Sept 2014

After 10 seasons , 220 Episodes the time came in the season 10 finale to say goodbye to one of TV's greatest characters.

The brilliant Cardiothoracic surgeon has been with us since the pilot ,she was part of the heart and soul that is grey's , part of its foundation. She helped the show become what it is today. She has survived plane crashes, bomb threats and Burke to get where she is now. Right from the very beginning I loved her , she stood out from amongst the rest with her dry and sarcastic humor , she was one of the main reasons I started to watch the show. Cristina was a strong and competitive woman who always stayed strong to her beliefs. Her dedication to her job was admirable , even though sometimes you could see her slowly loosing the plot. She never took no for an answer and always pursued something that she thought was right , even though others may not have agreed with. She became more caring , and supportive over the years. She went from a character that showed no emotion , to a character that had feelings deeper than a halve of the characters on the show. Cristina has been one of the most iconic characters on the show , Cristina has completely stole every scene she was in , and even if the plot line wasn't about her , she always owned her scenes.

Here are some of my favorite Cristina moments over her 10 year stay at Seattle Grace. (No Order)

The Beginning of the Dance it out tradition
In season 1 episode 5 Meredith comes home to a house full of people , curtisey of Izzy. After a long day for Meredith at the hospital full of worry that she might get kicked out as she returns home to a raging party. Cristina makes the party ok with just three words and they dance it out on the table. This is where a great friendship began that carried all the way through the show. It is the beginning of the dance it out tradition as well , which is how they get rid or figure out their feelings. I always loved seeing them dance it out. They did it at least once a season , and it was like their religion if they have a problem that they can't figure out what do they do? dance it out. I will miss that.

He's Gone , I'm Free
This is one of the most memorable Grey’s Anatomy moments to date.
I can't really not write about this since it was one of the most pivotal moments for Cristina. It was a painful moment when Preston Burke left her at the altar (well not the altar , but close enough). When she got to Burkes apartment and realized he had gone , was so heartbreaking to watch as she didn't want to be alone."I am free , Damn it" I think everyone felt for Cristina at this point. It was the hard realism that the man she fell in love with had upped and left her without even saying a proper goodbye. Burke changed her in a way , I would never of thought she would have gone into a relationship when we first met her , but she did. Then again , I didn't think she would be standing in a wedding dress. She became someone who was still dedicated to her job , but someone who was trying to make a life for herself. On the plus side if he didn't leave her , we probably wouldn't have met Owen who I like a lot more.

Cristina and the Bridesmaids
When Burke and Cristina's mothers descend on Seattle Grace , they didn't hide the fact that they were keeping the wedding traditions standard with bridesmaids and a white dress. Much to Cristina's horror, she has to actually ask and get bridesmaids whilst actually having to attend her own wedding. We all know Cristina asking someone is really hard , since she didn't really have many friends. Burke's "Mama" wants to make Cristina one of the family , by giving her a family air loom and by giving her the Burke look. By shaving off her eyebrows. At the time Cristina only wanted a simple wedding , but Burke wanted to the whole deal , which Cristina at this point wasn't so happy about. Cristina is so uncomfortable which is pure comedy. The only thing funnier? When she said "Mama took my eyebrows. It was as if she wasn't whole without them. This was so funny , everytime I see her with no eyebrows I can't stop laughing , she looked hilarious , like a shaved chicken.

Dr Thomas
Cristina doesn't like being told that there is a better way of doing things , she always tried to push the doctor away so that she could do what she wanted. It was different with Thomas.
When fellow doctors in Menisoda think he is too old for his job , Cristina disagrees and still believes he is an excellent surgeon. I agreed to!. She learnt a lot from him and had a lot more to learn , he was a really likeable character. During her time with him she tries to make him feel appreciated , by listening and learning his techniques. Cristina couldn't save his life , but she was one of the very few to ultimately respect Dr. Thomas in his final days. It was a beautiful relationship between a student and a mentor , they had great scenes together and I always looked forward to seeing them.

Owens PTSD
One of the most powerful scenes perhaps was when Cristina decided to stand by Owen after he strangled her during the night without knowing what he was doing. She was willing to remain with him and help him work through his issues even though she hardly knew him. This was the turning point in their relationship , and where it really made them stronger for the better. They built up trust from the episode onwards. Cristina showed us that she can care , it is isn't always about her , the old Cristina would have run a mile , but Owen had an affect on her right from when he first met her. He was Cristinas Mcdreamy. When I saw in the promo for episode 24 of season 10 "He was the love of her life" in which they were talking about Burke. I nearly threw my mouse at my screen. Owen is the love of her life and always will be. I wonder how he will cope without her.

You're My Person
Who can forget the line which we hear so often between two best friends.
We first heard the quote "You're my person" in episode 1 of season 2 when Cristina tells Meredith in the bar that she has been listed as her emergency contact. Close with Meredith she has successfully held herself pretty aloof up to this point focusing on surgeries and surgeries alone rather than making friends. She needed an emergency contact and Meredith is her person. They have many ups and downs during the show , hating one another , to the silent treatment, but Meredith remains Cristina's person. One of the things I will miss most about her leaving is her friendship with Meredith , it was so genuine and heartfelt they could always lean on each other for help. I wonder who Meredith will turn to now since her person is gone.

Some other memorable moments
- Cristina Singing like a virgin
- The hotdog challenge
- When she first met Owen
- Cristina and Derek go fishing
- Cristina tells Teddy she can have Owen

It wasn't just the character we should be thanking for the 10 years , but the actress Sandra Oh. She deservedly won a Golden Globe in 2006 for her portrayal. She brought the character to life , and made me smile when watching her in every scene. I hope to see her again on our TV screens. I will miss Cristina Yang/ Sandra Oh. Grey's will not be the same without her.

  3. Great article Robert, Christina was one of my favorite characters and she'll be missed ever so much. I really enjoyed her and Meredith's scenes. I completely agree, Grey's is going to missing the presence of Christina Yang, I hope to see her on TV again too 😀

  4. Thanks. I don't know if the show will be as good without her , she was really the standout character amongst them all, there wont be any comedic scenes which she brought with her.
Who knows maybe Geena Davis's character will be as awesome as Christina was.

  5. Great choice! It was really when she first opened up to Owen , which she found hard to do. It was a very emotional scene.

  7. Me too , Sandra Oh has said previously in an article I read months back that if Rhimes wants her back for a few episodes of the final season she would gladly come back. So here's hoping.

  8. One of my favorite moments of Cristina was in the season seven finale when she and Owen were arguing about the pregnancy and she said definitively "I am saying NO!". And when she was operating on Derek at gunpoint. And the time when she offered Owen to Teddy with a "Fine, done, take him" like it didn't even matter to her. And the time when she went all manic crying/laughing in the bathroom at Owen after he cheated on her. And in the bathtub recalling the events of the plane crash. And when she was giving Burke some 'sexytime' in his hospital room and Mama walked in on them. Also when she was running in the hospital with bloody scrubs on going to Richard to tell him about Burke's hand. Or how she treated George on a daily basis.
Explain to me again why this woman never got an Emmy

  9. yep, she deserved plenty of Emmys over the years but sadly for her the academy is crap and they only give Emmys to the same shows each year. (Im talking Breaking Bad , Homeland). You listed some great moments , I think nearly every episode she was in was a memorable moment as each episode she brought her best to the show.

  10. god i'll miss her like hell! i'm never gonna forget the hot dog challenge ...
*you wanna be me but you can't be me*... and the she almost pukes.. just awesome! i laughed so hard...
as a die hard fan of Grey's i really think the show should've ended in season 10, with Cristina.
Shonda should've planned the whole season as the "last" season and i'm sure it could've worked.

and i agree with people saying she deserved and Emmy ( or even more) she is a very funny, talented actress. i love her and i wish Sandra all the best! (she better be back in the series finale!!!!)

  11. The hot dog scene was great. I thought the season finale of season 10 would have been a great way to end the show , maybe change a few things around and tie up loose ends, but the very last scene with Christina in her office would have been a satisfying end to the show.

  12. She left the hospital to take a job elsewhere.
