My top 3 on TV right now; Amanda Rollins L&O SVU Amantha Holden Rectify Donna Paulsen Suits From previous shows - Mary Shannon In Plain Sight, Ms Parker Pretender, Abby Lockhart ER, Annie Frost Chase, Charlotte King Private Practice
Nikita and Buffy, but Veronica and Sydney are very very VERY close behind.
That being said, "female characters" is such a broad definition that I could be here for hours naming various favorites... Katherine Pierce, Caroline Forbes, Alex(andra) Udinov, Amanda Collins, Patty Hewes, Ellen Parsons, Melinda May, Juliet Burke, Faith Lehane, Willow Rosenberg, Cordelia Chase, Emily Thorne, Victoria Grayson, Irina Derevko, Moira Queen, Jo and Ellen Harvelle, etc... although a few of these characters got much less likable during later seasons of their shows.
Buffy was my first choice, Sydney Bristow was the second one. Too bad I could only vote for two people because Olivia from Fringe would have had my vote too. And now that I think about it I probably would chosen Veronica Mars too lol! Other : Willow (Buffy), Rebekah (TVD/TO), Vanessa Ives (Penny Dreadful), Phoebe Halliwell (Charmed), Pam (True Blood), Allison Dubois (Medium), just to name a few...
There's so many choices out there now like Sarah/Felicity from Arrow, Emma in Red Band Society seems like quite a laugh too but yeah on top of them there's others like Arya Stark - GoT, Hetty Lange - NCIS LA, Skye - AoS, Paige - Graceland, Shaw - PoI, Lois - Smallville, Kira/Malia/Lydia - Teen Wolf so it's really impossible to stick with a couple of choices.
There are a lot of female roles now and I know I'm missing a lot of them. I wanted to see just how many. So far, A LOT. There are some great characters being listed.

I didn't want to clutter up the choices but I have so many favorites. I wanted to see all of yours too. Veronica, Buffy, Tami, Alicia, Brooke, Carol (TWD), Ava (Justified) Kensi, Prentiss, Olivia. I could just keep going. I love the great characters being listed.
She'll probably live for a long time, hopefully. But no way of that happening. Not only because the North is a very different place and it takes a lot more to be able to rule it. But also there are at least 3 people ahead of her, and it's quite difficult for a woman to actually rule in that kind of medieval society. There's never been a Queen in Westeros. Not sure about before the war of conquest and each Kingdom respectively. Maybe in Dorne.
From that list only Veronica Mars would make any top list of mine..

So many great characters. On the list, Veronica Mars and Buffy. Off the list, my top two favorites are Fiona Glenanne (Burn Notice) and Parker (Leverage). They both have a skill set they are an expert in and are a vital part of their teams. It's great to have women who are thoroughly competent to watch. Other favorites include: Dana Scully from The X-Files, Abby Sciuto from NCIS, Aeryn Sun from Farscape, and Nikita from La Femme Nikita.
Currently I would go with Lydia Martin from Teen Wolf, Abbie Mills from Sleepy Hollow, Melinda May from SHIELD, Abby from The 100, Rosalee from Grimm, Garcia from Criminal Minds, El from White Collar, Erica from The Goldbergs, and Kate from Perception.
Dana Scully and Fiona will always be my favorite women on TV! :)

The two I picked are Buffy and Sydney. The character of Buffy helped make a number of these characters possible. I also pick.... Starbuck, Veronica, Olivia, and Nikita (both the CW incarnation and the first run syndie version that was on in the late 90s)
Oh the first 3 seasons of Supernatural are definitely worth the time. If you do get to them, let me know what you think. I love talking early SPN with first time watchers because I always get a nw perspective.
