  1. American Horror Story, Nip/Tuck coming in close second.

  2. As a huge fan of FX dramas I like this poll!

    1) Justified. It really is a brilliant show that hits all the sweet spots for a series for me; complex characters, bad guys that are more than just dumb asses that the good guys easily catch, brilliant character development in the form of Boyd Crowder, a rich sense of history between all the characters and family, twists and turns, tense action scenes and at its heart the friendship between Raylan and Boyd which drives the entire show. The acting from everyone is mesmerizing, I love how even tiny roles feel fully developed because the casting in this show is spot on every time.

    2) The Shield. A show I watched because of Justified introducing me to Walton Goggins. I love the Shield a whole lot, it really showed that cable networks outside of HBO could produce high quality shows that were every bit as brutal and brilliant as The Sopranos. The Shield mixed procedural with an over arc (the corruption of the Strike Team) really well and I'm not sure there is a better anti-hero than Vic Mackey, he did such terrible things at times but then would fight to see justice happen as well. Really great show with one of my favourite series finales.

    3) The Americans. The latest FX show to go from good to great in its second season. Again we are faced with feeling sympathy for the so called bad guys but its hard not to when you have such great performances from Russell and Rhys. The greatest thing about this show is that we know the ultimate ending of the Cold War and yet its impossible not to hope for some kind of happy ending for our Russian spies.

Outside of the top 3 I would mention 4) Terriers, a show which by now should be on like its 5th season, so good. 5) Fargo which deeply impressed me in season one and I can't wait to see where it goes with a whole new story. 6) The Bridge which is a really odd show at times and doesn't always work but has some really great personal relationships that make up for that.

SOA in the past would have been higher but its a mess now, it really is. An opportunity wasted by the OTT use of violence and the ability to make every character a nasty piece of work.

  3. Above anything else is Sons of Anarchy. The Shield in close second

  4. AHS, The Strain and The Americans.

  5. American Horror Story, Fargo and The Strain.

  6. It's a tie between SOA and The Americans. I will probably watch at some point the Strain and Tyrand. Don't much about the rest and if any of them worth watching.

  7. The Americans and Nip-tuck
    Other: Damages

  11. so so so hard to pick just 3 but here goes
    1 - fargo
    2 - the americans
    3 - the strain

  12. It used to be AHS but after Coven it lost my #1 spot.
    1. Sons of Anarchy
    2. AHS
    3. Terriers (really underrated)

  13. I only watch The Strain, but I will watch SOA and Fargo. I've heard a lot of good things about both of them.

  14. The Shield, Justified and SOA, even though I think it went off the rails a few seasons ago. I'm looking forward to Jax's revenge.
I just cannot stand AHS. I loved the creepiness of the first arc but these last few are just too stupid to have made it to TV. It's American HORROR Story. Not "throw anything together and make it work" story. There's no horror or creepiness to it. Just gross out actions that make me roll my eyes. Hard. I understand I'm in the minority on this one and I am ok with that.

  15. I could not agree with this post more. Boyd Crowder will always be in my top 2 favorite characters, ever. His rocky relationship with Raylan is one of the most well developed of any show I've watched. Those two together are pure gold.

  16. There's something incredibly aggravating about having to vote "Other" for Damages...

    ReplyDelete
  17. Easily Justified, though The Americans and Fargo are really close as well..

    ReplyDelete
  18. In this order: Fargo, Justified, and AHS. Justified would have been first before last season but Rayland has become a little sanctimonious for my taste. Boyd is still one of the best characters on TV though. Depending on how the Strain ends this season it may edge out AHS. The actors are better on AHS but the Strain story line is better than the last season of AHS. Probably dropping the Americans because I hated last season and this may be the end of the Bridge for me as well. SOA got to be a little too much for me a few seasons back although I will probably go back and watch it after it is all over.

  19. Seriously I couldn't believe how well the show and Walton developed the character, he went from a shit head racist to one of the best characters on TV.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I think often people just vote for the latest shows, because seriously The Strain and Tyrant have been hugely disappointing to me, FX usually does better.

  23. Your enthusiasm of Justified makes me want to give it another try. I stopped after Season 3 because of the brutality, even though I bought Season 4 on iTunes I never watched it ... maybe I should finally watch it! Or should I skip S4 and watch S5?

    ReplyDelete
  24. I will say its a pretty violent show at times but I always thought it was balanced with a good sense of humor so it has never been too bleak. Don't skip S4 its my second favourite season after 2! It has a different feel to it as its more of a mystery than a big bad plus Gutterson finally gets more to do.

Really I wouldn't skip any seasons, S5 really builds up to a nice finish which will sure to pay off in the final season next year.

Maybe don't binge-watch and watch some comedy in between so it doesn't get too brutal.

  25. out of the ones that I watch, Justified for sure, then AHS, and the Bridge.. Nip/Tuck was great early and then off the rails, Fargo was great too, and still too early with the Strain for me. I always hear great things about SoA, but just haven't had the time to check it out yet

    ReplyDelete
  26. Thx, will do :-) I loved Timothy O and Walton in season 1 and 2. Season 3 was not that great. I wish they would tune down the violence a bit. In recent years most shows - not only Justified- got more violent without actually needing it. Justified would still be an awesome show IMO.

  27. I haven't seen a lot of them yet, most of them are not my watchlist though. I voted for AHS and Fargo.

  28. Justified, I just love Raylan and Boyd.
I use to like SoA, but it got to dark for me last season and I dropped it. I heard they killed Tara off, so I´m not gonna pick it up again. The first 3 seasons were fantastic though. :-)

  29. My favorite FX show is Justified, I love the cast, I love the characters and I love that kind of dark humor. I also like The Americans and Fargo. But first: Justified!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I'm just glad to see Terriers made this list, even if it's way at the bottom. People need to watch this show. It's on Netflix everyone, check it out! You won't regret it.

  31. AHS, Fargo, and The Bridge.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I haven't watch The Strain yet, but Tyrant was really disaapointing.

  33. They are the king of dramas in my opinion, with HBO not to far behind (even though some of their shows have become incredibly bad)

  34. It depends on what fails19 August 2014 at 22:49

The Americans, Fargo and The Shield.

  35. Sons of Anarchy, Justified and Nip/Tuck

  36. I only watch AHS, so...

  37. 1) American Horror Story - who doesn't enjoy this series!
    2) The Strain - silver - handled cane sword, rat exterminator, and head crushing blood - drinking monsters! All we need is Wesley Snipes and we got "Blade 2".............wait...........didn't Guillermo del Toro direct that film?
    3) The Bridge - two words.................Sonya Cross, nuff said!
    Nobody, 4 NOW!!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. One/Two, and not necessarily in that order: Justified and The Shield. Yeah, so what if that's the only two FX shows I've watched? I'll say that you might have to pay closer attention to Justified than you would another show just because of the richness of the characters.

As for other thoughts -- I think Lou said it all.

  39. The Bridge hands down. But you have to understand a little bit of both sides to kind of get it. I understand it completely, but it does take time to unravel things. I will admit that. I had no idea the U.S. tried to colonize Mexico twice.

    ReplyDelete
  40. 1) Justified - Simply Fantastic. The best writing on TV - hands down. Some of the most colorful characters ever. Great humor. Plus, one of the best bad guys on TV - Boyd Crowder.
    2) Fargo - Aces!
    3) AHS - batshit insane.
    Others that I have seen:
The Shield - I would be (will be) higher on my list but I've only seen the first season. But damn. That first season was amazing.
The Americans - first season was great. Heard some great things about season 2.
Damages - Fist season was interesting. Can't wait to watch more sometime.
Sons - watching it now. Good. Not falling in love yet.

  41. Not to mention .........
How can you NOT love watching Timothy O as Rayland? - that swagger - wearing his hat and those wonderful snarky comments ! ? !
