The Vampire Diaries - Season 6 - Could be the Last Season

27 Aug 2014

The Vampire Diaries could end after its upcoming sixth season, star Ian Somerhalder has hinted."It very well could be our last [season]," the actor said.

"I think now that there's a finality to it, everyone's really realising that this is a very important time in our lives. We created some very cool storytelling".

The CW is yet to officially confirm the future of The Vampire Diaries beyond its sixth season, which is scheduled to premiere on October 2 in the US.

  1. So I'm assuming Somerhalder was the hold out then?

    ReplyDelete
  2. Give me at least one season with Steroline. Putting those two together at the ass end of the series kinda defeats the purpose.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Last season was the worst season ever...the writing became so bad that S6 should be the last season, but it's CW..they won't give up until a S7 sadly..

    ReplyDelete
  4. Even though I love the show, it used to be my favorite actually, lately it was becoming weirder and weirder and a lot of stuff didn´t make any sense. Truth is I wouldn´t be that sad if it ended with this season.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Lol, yah…because The CW really cares about ending shows when they should end.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Ian said that like a month ago on Comic Con, that site is just rehashing it and making it sound like something big. It's just him stating the obvious, since they're all signed for six years and so far only 2 out of the main three have signed for a seventh one. I'm pretty sure this won't be the last season, even if season 7 is shortened, and there's a lot of negotiation ahead of them before a decision is made.

    ReplyDelete
  7. My thoughts, too. The last I heard the network had all but confirmed that even if the third (presumably Ian) didn't sign, the series would still be going ahead for another season.

I love TVD. It's still my favourite TV show. But season 6 really should be the last seaon. They would have the oppurtunity to end the show and the stories with dignity, not drag them out forever.
But I'm pretty sure season 7 will happen, because TVD still has good ratings if you compare it with Reign, Hart of Dixie, ... :)

    ReplyDelete
  9. If it is I hope they decide ahead of time. I hate when series end by being cancelled at the last second (Alphas, I'm looking at you!)

    ReplyDelete
  10. I think they misintrepted what he said, I don't think he meant there have been talks about ending the shows after this season. I think he was being hypothetical, the show has been running for many years now and it could potentially end soon.

That said, I doubt this season will be the last. Unless ratings pull a 90210 and drop miserably next spring, I'm sure The CW will not let The Vampire Diaries go easily. Despite how the new shows do. Despite what Ian wants.

  11. It's not selfish at all. They had contracts for 6 seasons. He didn't gave up.He wants to move on before it's too late.
Julie is the selfish here. She managed to destroy the show and she wants to continue???Give up lady.
I love the show but it hurts to see what she did to my favorite tvd.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I think 'this' is part of a bigger PR 'stunt'.
They have know for awhile that season seven ( shortened ) will be TVD last so they first tell us one star is holding out, then one star says season six will be the last, fans get upset, cue will give you a final seventh season and it's a deal. A deal that TPTB over at the show have know all about forever,
Season six will be the final full season and season seven will be 6 to 12 episodes to tie everything up. Bye Bye TVD.

    ReplyDelete
  13. It's true, without us fans ian would be nowhere he is now,at least he should make a last effort for the sake of devoted fans! But,i'm sensing it's a PR stunt to increase the viewership this season, nothing more.

    ReplyDelete
  14. THIS! Completely agree,it's just taken out of context,as usual and will become some kinda media circus until january official renewal!

    ReplyDelete
  15. They do though, they gave final seasons to Smallville, OTH, Nikita and Gossip Girl. 90210 was given "advanced notice" of its cancelation while in the middle of filming its last episode for the season and Hart of Dixie's upcoming season is reportedly going to be its last.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I can see Season 9 now... love triangle between Matt, Bonnie and Tyler.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I wouldn't mind seeing Matt x Tyler.

    ReplyDelete
  18. aaaa nope WE are not. i have been waiting for Steroline to happen since he started helping her with being a better vampire/person.
Steroline is one of two couples i ever cared about on this show. Just because everyone hooking up with everyone was gross and poorly handled on this show doesn't mean the one good couple that actually has the potential (and cuteness) should be banned from ever being given a chance.

    ReplyDelete
  19. i was under the impression that it was already done deal.
They went on and one about how they want out of this crap show and to go out into the world and have real careers. And their contracts are only for 6 years.
What happened? Did they finally realise that they can't act and won't get any other jobs except small supporting gigs?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Vampire Diaries hasn't been all that great as of lately, if this is the final season that would be ok with me. Tho I'd have to see how this season is to decide if i would like to get a 7th and final season.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Ditto. Although my favorite slash ship on TVD is Matt/Jeremy. They would've been so cute together. *sigh*

    ReplyDelete
  22. They're cute too but Alaric/Damon is my favorite slash though. Ric being back is pretty much the only exciting thing about the upcoming season.

    ReplyDelete
  23. What I find amusing is the idea that the show should go on an extra season just so someone's favorite ship can happen. LOL. Typical shipper logic, so clearly the original commentator is in this show's target audience.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I have friends that used to be in love with this show. But, nowadays, they wish the show ends. Nothing is that good anymore and the producers don't know what to do with the show.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I would love for Ian to move on into something he can really get his teeth into..He has not been the Damon I loved since season 2, just a little puppy following Elena around...ugh. He needs more roles like he had on Lost.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I don't watch the show (but I like to read all the comments and the news) and honestly I believe, from what I know about Ian Somerhalder, that he's very grateful to the show and his fans, but he definitely would be somewhere even without this show... He is such a nice person with so many projects and ambitions. He can do everything he wants with or without TVD and if you are a fan you should know this... It's not like TVD created Ian Somerhalder (or any other actor in the show), it's more the contrary. And don't forget he's 35 years old... it's probably time for him to move on and do something more "appropriate to his age". Please don't get mad to this comment, is just my personal opinion.

    Have a nice day :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Looks like the CW will soon be vampire-free considering this and The Originals ratings.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Let's all rally up the TVD fandom and storm Kevin Williamson's office to demand his return to the show.

    ReplyDelete
  29. of course i know that but i also believe that every show at least deserves a proper ending.TVD changed the face of CW and still is a major player and is fully worthy of getting a final 7th season when all the significant shows of the past in CW has got that.I would surely hope ian and all the others can come together for the final season and go out in somewhat decent way than limpering it's way out. That's my wish and it may or may not happen, but i'm wishful for a separate final season.Since season 3,i've wished that this show would go on for approx 7 years and that still hasn't changed.Let's see what happens but i get what r trying too say.

    ReplyDelete
  30. That's a great idea but with stalker coming this fall and TF next year,it's not possible for him to come back even if he wanted to!

    ReplyDelete
  31. The CW didn't confirm anything yet... And this isn't really news given Ian Somerhalder said that months ago at Comic-con if my memory serves. Plus some of the actors are still in talks for a seventh season... Well like I said nothing new.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Not sure Julie Plec is the selfish one here because I doubt the CW is willing to let go of a show that's still a hit. And i guess she still wants to keep her job ;) !
I agree with you on the Ian part though. I mean I'm pretty sure actors are very well aware of what they owe to their fans but building up a career is essentially a "selfish" thing as it should be! Moving on to other projects is also an artistic choice. That being said, I'm pretty sure TVD will get renewed for a seventh season.

    ReplyDelete
  33. My thoughts exactly ;) !

    ReplyDelete
  34. He can always give TVD the Dawson's Creek treatment. Have him write the finale the way he wants the show to end.

    ReplyDelete
  35. They only need two leads to want out and the show is done.

    ReplyDelete
  36. They already have the spin off and everyone's contract expires after season 6. Both Ian and Paul have said in the past they want to do other things.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I wish Tyler/Jeremy would have happened.

    ReplyDelete
  38. julie said that she and kevin came up with the end scene of the series finale when they were filming season 2 and also said that a lot has changed since then but that ending is still on the table,so it can happen.

    ReplyDelete
  39. TVD used to be my favorite show but the show hasn't been good since 3x14 and every season it has gotten worse. Still I can't quit it. I hope season 6 is the last.
My guess is that they are still in negotiations. I just hope Ian and Paul still want to leave the show. I don't want a seventh season but I could deal with a two hour "movie" as the series finale.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I don't believe a word Plec says lol

    ReplyDelete
  41. 2 out the trio had already signed the renewal contract, ian is the one most probably holding out to hike up his fee.

    ReplyDelete
  42. i really hope whatever she said is true coz i have no intention to see what julie alone will plan for the series finale,or worse, with even horrible writer/delena fangirl-caroline dries!

    ReplyDelete
  43. But they only do that when the rating plummet, not when the story really needs to wrap up. Otherwise, Smallville would have ended in S7 and Gossip Girl in S3.
Don't get me wrong, it's an admirable thing that The CW usually sticks with their shows and gives them an ending, but sometimes they stretch things out too long instead of letting their shows have an organic ending.

    ReplyDelete
  44. For those who want the TVD to end, why don't you just stop watching? I love the cast and I like it to continue as long as possible. The ratings for the CW are still ok, there is no reason for them to quit this show. Even though the actors might like to do something else, it is still a pretty good steady income, and I guess they know that. None of them has been so overly successful outside of TVD to be honest. I like my thursdays with Nina, Paul and Ian!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Yes. I agree. It's time for the show to end. There's no need to run a show beyond its natural course. Otherwise they'll end up sucking like Smallville and Supernatural.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Source? Because everything indicates nothing has been settled yet.

    ReplyDelete
  47. it's all over the net for over a week now.It has not been settled yet coz one of them is pulling TBBT stunt.

    ReplyDelete
  48. If that involves a crossover with Julie's other show, the much beloved Kyle XY, I'm all for it.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Can CW really afford to let the next season be the last though?I mean SPNs ancient & not gonna last much longer and other than VD,SPN,Arrow they have no true hit shows though I wouldn't be suprised if Flash is one.CW will collapse in the next couple seasons when VD,SPN if they don't come up with new lasting hits.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Pedowitz never said season season four of HoD will be the last,he said "we'll see how it goes".Everyones assuming it will,be the last cause of low ratings

    ReplyDelete
  51. A lot of shows on a lot of networks "stretch out too long instead of ending with an organic ending" especially for true hit show.As long as a show has the ratings and is making enough money to justify keeping it,networks don't care about"organic endings"& "not going way past when it should've."

    ReplyDelete
  52. I think it really depends on a lot of factors other than just ratings. For one thing, I've read somewhere the net's deal with Netflix requires them to syndicate to the streaming service many of their shows (which are all produced and owned by the owners' respective studios) that are complete, meaning they have to have a decent conclusions at the end of a show's run.

The deal with Netflix probably serves as an alternative business model to gain revenues thus the tendency for the CW to give their vets final seasons, or in the case of 90210 last year, "advanced notice" just to milk their properties for all their worth in digitial syndication.

    ReplyDelete
  53. But that will be the likelihood the show is going, especially with the star of the show pregnant so its already reduced episode order for the upcoming season was said to have now settled at 10 to accomodate Rachel Bilson's pending maternity leave.

Unless it can pull of a miracle in the ratings next season, I doubt Joshua Schwarts and the showrunner of the show would pass on this opportunity to craft an ending if the unthinkable happens.

    ReplyDelete
  54. You realize that Forbes article about Netflix requiring its shows or CW shows to have an ending was just guesswork by the author and not confirmed right?

    ReplyDelete
  55. if theyb wrapm up things properlly, im in.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Yes but look at Scandal-star got pregnant, episode order reduced yet noones sayings season four will be the last.Hayden P of Nashvilles pregnant but noones next season will be the last.Stars on tv shows get pregnant all the time but it hardly means the show will end next season.Look at Greys Anatomy in season five when lead Ellen P got pregnant yet the show didn't end there. There are lots of working tv actress moms.

    ReplyDelete
  57. That's why I didn't say it being a sure fact but with CW giving final seasons to many of their long-runners, it sure looks like it is. How else will they be willing to shell out money to make one last season?

As for Smallville, its ratings, which historically declined over the years, have been strong during its last few seasons spent on Fridays, allowing the CW to have multiple seasons of stable performances on that particular night well until Cult came along.

It would have justified another season more but IMO, Season 10 seems to be the perfect time to end the show while it is still on a high.

    ReplyDelete
  58. The difference is that HoD is being pushed to midseason or possibly towards early summer. It's not a sure guarantee it will help its chances of going back or but its increase its odds of cancelation.

    ReplyDelete
  59. SMV ending had nothing to do with ratings-which you're right even on Fri & as old as it was-had TW wanted another season,it wouldve

    ReplyDelete
  60. I think that when certain shows have been on for 4 or more years, it's reasonable for viewers to want an end in site (depending on the type of show). Sometimes it has nothing to do with liking or disliking a show. It has do with wanting good closure and not wanting your favorite show to drag on forever, with no clear direction. This tendency for shows to stubbornly hang around is a big problem with network shows that care more about money than making viewers happy. It's fine for procedural shows like NCIS, Law and Order or CSI, or even the Good Wife (that always has a new case) to have very long runs, but shows that have an ongoing evolving plot usually work best when the writers have a clear end in site. But that's just personal preference.

I really miss Breaking Bad, but one of the many reasons that so many viewers regard this show as the golds standard is that the writers decided to honour the fans, instead of trying to squeeze every possible penny out of the show. They could have easily prolonged the show, given its high ratings, but they. Didn't. The writers worked out a timeline and stuck with it. Fabricating a lot of ridiculous drama, such as various love triangles, in order to keep a series going is never good. Yes, people continue to watch it, because they are still invested in the characters and want to see what happens, so I don't agree with telling people to stop watching a show just because they want it to end.

    ReplyDelete
  61. You mistaken me. I'm referring to shows that should have ended long before they actually ended. Smallville should have ended much earlier, and so should have One Tree Hill. They were prolonged until they became a drag to watch. You said yourself 90210 was given an advanced notice on its CANCELLATION….that's not being fair and letting a series run its natural course at all.

Don't know GG or HoD's runs, but I also know that people wanted more of Nikita. Also, giving a series a last hurrah of a small batch of numbers is also not caring about ending a series right. When it comes to The CW, Harvey Dent's line from The Dark Knight fits like a glove when speaking about the shows that are on The CW.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Smallville actually got better over the years IMO but yeah Supernatural should end. Its been going on for too long.

    ReplyDelete
  63. To me those millions of viewers who still tune in on Thursday trump your need for closure any time! Maybe they are happily entertained and like to keep it that way?

    ReplyDelete
  64. Great, it should be.

    ReplyDelete
  65. The network is up from the previous season so they aren't in much trouble like some people say. Also last season they beat Fox and NBC more than one night.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I agree. I don't get why this is so hard to understand. Some of us don't enjoy the show as much as we used to but we want a decent closure. Last season was terrible (except for the last episode) and I'm sure that setting an end date will at least bring some focus and maybe the storylines will get better.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Really? don't be mean, don't get my hopes up, that's just cruel!

    ReplyDelete
  68. season 6 should be the last season. Season 5 was a disaster and they can't imagine more logical storylines. I love tvd but I think 6 seasons is enough for a tv show.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I have no doubt that the networks would agree with you 100%., Ratings will always trump overall viewer satisfaction. I just think you missed my point, since I am one of those millions of viewers who still tune in on Thursdays to watch TVD, And no.... I am not "happily entertained". I continue to watch for the reasons I mentioned earlier (investment in characters, need for closure, etc. etc.). Given the tone of many of the recent TVD threads, I suspect that I am not the only one.

    ReplyDelete
  70. This being the last season would be fine with me so long as they wrap up well. I've been disappointed with the last 2 seasons overall.

    ReplyDelete
  71. You are missing my point, I could not care less about the network but I like to watch the show and want to express that. Not ratings but satisfied viewers will trump closure at any time. I don't want it to end just because some people don't like it and rather have it to end than to learn how to find something else to do on Thursday. Why not respect those who like to watch it? For those of us who still enjoy the show, and I suspect there are many, too -this is getting quite tiring. Negativity is always more expressed than praise. TVD has created characters I care about and I don't want to see them go just because some fans don't like the storyline. My bet is that those complainers will not like ending either, because the show runners write as they please and they never will get it right for everyone. So they might as well continue the show for those who still like it.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Agree but baring flash which will be most probably a bigger hit than arrow ever was,i'm not seeing much potential in this year's pilots.Remember this year,HoD and BatB will go for sure,JtV looks like DOA,no offense to anyone, that leaves TO and reign.Reign was already doing horrible at the end, this year it will fall further and we all know TO moving to mondays in that death slot isn't really assuring either. My point,CW execs have bigger fish to fry.If the cast renewal agreement goes through, they wouldn't bother touching it.

    ReplyDelete
  73. True but I doubt The Flash will be much more successful than Arrow, as while it does have the CW's marketing campaign behind it, and its pilot is well received amongst critics, it's still a CW show and has many elements of one that'll turn off a ton of potential viewers.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Plus rarely are spin-offs much more successful than the original show (not to insult the Flash I thought the pilot was great and think it'll definitely do quite well but I don't think it'll become the biggest CW show or anything.)

    ReplyDelete
  75. I am seeing a bigger opening though despite year-to -year decreasing viewership.I'm guessing around 4 mil and 1.3 rating will be more reasonable for the premiere considering every aspect.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Give me a solid reason why it won't be the highest rated show this year on CW.The only competition i see here is SPN,no one else.

    ReplyDelete
  77. TO will struggle this year in that time slot.TVD was already down last spring,i don't see that changing magically.Reign will go down along with it.HoD and BatB isn't even near these shows,so not bothering discussing their fate.Arrow although delivered superb episodes throughout the year, did go down in the spring quite a lot-especially in the total viewership-a show in it's 2nd year was expected to grow, but that didn't happen.Only left one-SPN.No explanation, just loyal fanbase and rock steady ratings!

    ReplyDelete
  78. It's facing off against NCIS which is basically the highest rated drama on TV. And the Flash ain't a giant killer.

    ReplyDelete
  79. That's a problem, sure but TVD also went up against TBBT,which IS the highest rated broadcast show.It did not affect them at all until the show itself started sucking after katherine died.Anyway,NCIS is a highly old skewing drama, the audiences don't overlap that much i think. And if not flash, who would have gotten that spot otherwise. It's not like SPN will ever be on 8 pm slot anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  80. So true. They should totally write whatever they want to write like earlier seasons when there were no expectations and overt criticism-independent of the desire to please every fandom out there.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Seasons 9 and 10 of Smallville were pretty great, unlike 7 and 8.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I think The Originals will be around for a least another season considering BatB will almost certainly die, and HoD is almost certain to be over as well. Combine that with Jane the Virgin's almost certain failure and I doubt it'll die this year.

    ReplyDelete
  83. But shouldn't you therefore respect the opinion of others? I completely respect that some people are fine with the show continuing. My whole point was to explain why some might want it to end even if they are fans of the show. I think that's a viewpoint that you should try to respect instead of criticizing those who don't see things the way you do.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I'll take any relationship involving Tyler.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Who says I don't respect your opinion? I just have a different one from yours and expressed it. You started to comment on my opinion first and not vice versa. The real question is, why cannot I say that I like the show to continue for many seasons without being criticized?

    ReplyDelete
  86. This isn't really a surprise. we all expected this, idk why they even bothered to announce that a third main character wouldn't sign. Anyways i would've been OK with a seventh, but shit do i hope this is the last. Just go out with a bang. DON'T end up like TB pleaseeeee!!! (and give me my Steroline before this season is up, idc if they're endgame or not. I just wanna see it)

    ReplyDelete
  87. Actually I didn't have a problem with your opinion. of still wanting to watch the show. It was telling the rest of us that we should just stop watching the show and respect those who liked the show by not complaining that was annoying. There's a difference.

    ReplyDelete
  88. It should be. The show is not that good anymore. TVD is the past, The Originals is the future.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Like you said we will see but Arrow i am not expecting the Flash to premiere better than Arrow. Also the Flash will face the Voice & NCIS and don't know how they will affect it. So for me the chance of Flash outperforming Arrows series premiere number are very small.

    ReplyDelete
  90. I am not sure if The Originals will survive to see another season. Not so good ratings for a new show and Mondays are tuff.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I think The Flash will be the new hit for CW.I don't know if it will be the highest rated until the end, but i think that will have a good premiere.

    ReplyDelete
  92. I wouldn't be too sure.TO moving into that monday death slot and already struggling in the last half of the freshman season is not a good sign at all.I would be more than happy if it survives more than 2 season, not more.

    ReplyDelete
  93. TO season finale did better than most shows of The CW (expect Supernatural and Arrow) so I wouldn't be worried about it

    ReplyDelete
  94. This is starting to bore me. As a viewer you only have the choice between watching or not watching, there is no door number three. Same with your favorite ice-cream, you cannot wish they would close all the ice-cream shops just because you are not able to stay away. This comments section of TVD used to be fun, now it is just complaints about the show. And my intention was to point out that there are quite a few who still like the show just the way it is.

    ReplyDelete
  95. TO and TVD both got 0.8 if i'm not wrong and we all know about the slot TO is moving in.Last season SPN helped the show to some extent being the lead-out but this year it will have no such advantage and following the show,JtV is most likely a goner. Not to mention,it would go up against Gotham which is the most hyped show this fall besides the flash and HTGAWM.Of course,i want the show to do okay, but i have a feeling it would get hurt most.

    ReplyDelete
  96. The ice cream analogy doesn't fit and means that you still didn't get me point. But I agree. It's starting to bore me too. Ciao.

    ReplyDelete
  97. In the word of Kitty Forman: You kids change partners more than square dancers.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Season finale doesn't change anything. It's season finale.People uses to watch the finale. From 0.6 to 0.8 yes,it was better. But not good.TVD did 0.8 also.Still not good for season finale. But it was on fifth season and still the highest for CW.That's the difference.

    ReplyDelete
  99. "For those who want the TVD to end, why don't you just stop watching? "
If they did TVD would lose more than half its fanbase and the show would get cancelled anyway. The majority of people online and out that I speak too want it over and are really just watching out of loyally and because they have invested 5 years and ant a decent series finale. TVD is over. The shows premises is a triangle, a girl confused over brothers....and its one premises the writers will not let go. Seriously how long can a girl STILL be confused after 5 seasons on brothers she has sampled already?
My grandmother has a word for girls like that!

    ReplyDelete
  100. I politely disagree. TVD is so much more as a love triangle after 5 seasons. It's the bond of friendship between all of them which keeps a lot of fans watching. The love triangle is not important anymore, it does not matter who Elena is with. It is not all about shipping, I am excited that Alaric is back and curios what story (and not a romantic one) they have for Damon and Bonny. If they come up with a good story I like to watch it. Plus TVD is quite international these days, so all those people who ''speak out'' on the internet might not be the ones who influence the ratings. To me it is quite selfish to wish for a show to end just because you don't agree with the writing.

    ReplyDelete
  101. I'm sorry but will have to disagree too. TVD has been all about romantic relationships and very little friendships. Elena has spent the majority jumping ON/OFF Damon, Bonnie has been AWOL for most of the season, Caroline has been here and there. They are even turning the one consistnat friendship into more, like men can't just be friends with women! The disgruntled people I chat with largely complain about the lack of real story substance involving ALL characters. Not just having everything revolve around the trio, namely Elena.
Paul and Ian both got there own separate stories but that still became all about Elena or Nina! Silas was nothing but another triangle suicidal love struck pup, and Damon's story became all about Elena and her father.

I am genuinely happy that you are enjoying the show, it's been a while since I spoke to someone who did but saying you want a show you once loved to end on a high is not selfish because we have also invested our time and energy on this show and have the right to want the best for it. We just happen to believe its time to end it in a blaze.

My favourites are Stefan/Caroline/Bonnie. I am not just invested in these characters but the actors too. I am not very happy with TVD and want these actors to move on the better projects. I'm sure they are more than ready for a change.
