True Blood – Lost Cause - Review: "Moving Forward"

24 Jul 2014

Last Sunday, True Blood reached its mid season, for the last time. After last week episode, which was one of the best of the series, I must admit I was first a bit disappointed by “Lost Cause”. It was slower, and I didn’t like Sookie’s attitude in the first half of the episode. But, it was still a very good episode, very enjoyable.
I loved the party at Sookie’s, it kinda reminds me of season two when Maryann took over Sookie’s place and made all those orgies. The mood wasn’t the same, but still, it was party at Sookie’s… To celebrate life, the day after Alcide died. It was weird, for sure but I didn’t mind it. It seemed something people in Bon Temps would do anyway. The party was fun, thanks to Arlene and Lafayette.
And like usual, Eric and Pam spent the episode following their own story, on the look for Sarah Newlin. I like watching more Eric and Pam together, but it’s been five episodes and I think it’s time they get closer to Sookie and Bon Temps. Maybe they will in the next episode. It's the last season damn, I need more of Bill/Sookie/Eric.

As I said, I didn’t like Sookie’s attitude in “Lost Cause”. Last week, she was so determined and pro active, it was fun to see this side of her character, just like last season and in the first. Sookie can be so fresh and sometimes she gets so annoying ! And , this week, damn, she was annoying. I get the girl was sad because of Alcide’s death but she could have been nicer to the people who came to support her.
Lafayette is Sookie's best friend, so of course he was there to help Sookie during her grief and of course he had to throw a party. And shit went down at that party.
First, there was a proposal ! It was so strange because it was so joyful and I cried a little when Andy proposed to Holly. I’ve never really cared about Andy but since he had his daughters, the writers and Chris Bauer did such an amazing work. It’s really astonishing. Andy’ speech to Jessica was a perfect example, it’s was so emotional, true and so clever. Who could have expected it from Andy in season one ?

Arlene was also at the top of her game at that party. She celebrated her freedom and her life with Holly by getting super drunk. Carrie Preston has always been an extraordinary actress, I’ve loved Arlene since the pilot. She really brings something to the show, I can’t imagine Merlotte’s without her. She is so real, fresh and joyful. Her flirt with the vampire, Keith, who saved her last week at Fangtasia was so much fun. And in a completely different scene, Carrie Preston showed the extant of her talent. Her speech to Sookie about losing the man you love was so beautiful. I wanted to hug Arlene so much.

And of course, some major drama happened at that party, like always. Lafayette and James got closer, like really closer. Their kiss didn’t surprise me at all, it was obvious they were going to do it soon. But they didn’t stop at a kiss, which didn’t surprise me much either actually. Jess was very surprised, she didn’t see it coming at all… But in the same time, she has grown quite distant with James since the beginning of the season. Their couple was fragile, and it didn’t seem like she wanted to make effort to save her relationship.
Even Jason saw James was gay, and of course, Jason being there for Jess to comfort her led to them kissing…. I loved Jason and Jess as a couple, before. Now, it seems like a bad idea. They have grown up, they’re different now and I don’t think they’ll make a great couple… Maybe because I want Jess and Adilyn to be one.
Unfortunately for them, Violet heard them having sex in the room. I was quite surprised she decided to go instead of busting them. I don’t know what she has prepared for them but I'm hopeful it’ll be fun. I know a lot of people don’t like Violet, but I really do. Her line to Sookie about losing more than hundred boyfriends was so funny. I actually laughed out loud watching it. It was so out of place, the girl is really weird but it makes her funny and charming. I still think she's the best girlfriend Jason ever had. Jess and Jason were never really a couple for me.

As usual since the season has started, Bill and Sookie are getting closer… slowly. Very slowly. This week, Bill showed her support, he was so quiet at the party. He was probably bored actually, thinking about his dead old wife... And we were also bored watching them, thank you Bill.
Anyways, Sookie made her little declaration to him, he can see her as she can’t see herself…. It’s cute. But, I think it’s time for them to decide whether they are going to kiss and fuck or just be friend and look into their eyes with envy !
And the big shocker came at the end, with the lonely Bill looking at himself in the mirror. Bill is infected ! Damn ! And since his last feed was on Sookie, does this mean Sookie is infected ? Is she a carrier ? Despite of her fairly blood ? That could be a very interesting way to see how infected Sookie will interact with Bill and Eric while being infected. But nothing is sure yet. What is sure is that they really need to find a cure for Hep V or we are going to lose Eric Northman and William Compton. That would leave Sookie all alone and miserable and so she could end up with Sam …. That's why we really need a cure.

Eric and Pam were absolutely fabulous in “Lost Cause”, as they always are. I’m glad we’re spending more time with them as a duo this season, but I also really want them to get more involved with Sookie and Bill. But now that Bill is infected, he and Sookie will be interesting in what Sarah Newlin knows, so they can meet up with Eric and Pam.
Thanks to Willa’s intel, she decided to share just now, after being released. Eric was never really her maker, he only turned her to play against her father. I’m glad they’re not linked anymore, so Willa is freer to do what she wants. (a waitress at Bellefleur's). Willa revealed Sarah had a vampire sister in Dallas, of course Eric and Pam went there, acted as “Republicunts” (Pam, I love you). We met with Sarah’s parents. I get where she’s got her attitude : it’s from her mother. They were so perfect together, so funny while being so serious. I loved every line of it.

But the Yakuza came to the party also and killed Sarah’s parents. It was very violent, but nothing compared to what Eric did to the Yakuza. It was horrifying and disgusting… And quite sexy in a way only Eric Northman can pull it off.
Now, Eric has finally found Sarah and maybe they can find a cure. The bitch had to have something otherwise I’m afraid True Blood is aiming towards the extinction of vampires on Earth… And that would be so tragic and depressing for a series finale.

And you, what did you think of “Lost Cause” ? Do you want to save Eric ? Or Bill ? Or just let the vampires die ? Hit the comments !

Vampires notes :

• Lettie Mae’ speech about how Tara died a hero, sacrificing herself for a mother who didn’t raise her was so beautiful. It was the perfect speech in honor of Tara…. I miss her so much :(
• Is Violet going to get her revenge on Jess ? Or on Jason ? On both ? What do you think she's planning ?
• Jason the sweetest man in the world as Jessica stated ?
• Isn’t Ginger the best ? She made me laugh so hard in the opening scene, it was a great honor to her character. It felt like it was the last time we would ever see her but it was a perfect way to end her story. Being a sex slave without the sex and screaming her lungs out just to be with Eric Northman : it's just Ginger. Her love for Eric was no limit (and so has her voice)
• Lafayette speech about wanting a piece of happiness felt a bit awkward for me. He could have mentioned Jesus, he was his true love (IMO)
• Remember : don’t say yes before he actually asked the question ;) and don’t say I’m sorry after being caught cheating.

  3. Great Review! Only going to comment on your notes:
Lettie Mae's speech about Tara was heart warming and now that it has been said Lettie Mae can die. I don't care how many pretty words they say about Tara. Killing her off screen (and not even letting us see Pam feel her death) is forever going to be unforgivable.
Violet - i'm thinking one of two things happens, Jess or Jason die or there's a threesome. I vote Threesome. BTW - I love Jess and Jason together. their sex is always so hot....
    Ginger is the best. Period.

  5. Grammar and spell check, dude.

Anyway, I think Tara isn't dead. We didn't see her die on screen. She is a major character, so the least they could have done was given us some kind of confirmation. I think one of the big twists this season is that she is not dead, somehow.
