The Bridge - Sorrowsworn - Advance Preview

     Previously on The Bridge: Frye and Adrianna's investigation is getting bloodier, the new DEA characters are playing politics (and valuing the credit of the investigation over just catching her and thus putting a dangerous killer behind bars), Marco is coming to an understanding with the new prosecutor while helping Sonya on the other side of the border, and Eleanor is relentless in her need to be equally as bizarre as she is cruel (that's a good thing by the way... at least for TV).

     Something that is very interesting about The Bridge is how it is able to integrate Sonya's Aspergers without making it the central element of the show. While her condition's level of focus can make her job easier at times, it almost always complicates one aspect of her life per episode. This small reminder to the audience can reveal itself in a number of ways. Be it in her personal life, professional life, or the odd middle ground that Sonya sometimes finds herself in, the writers always find a way to make sure that her disease is mentioned (without actually being mentioned outright). In this episode, expect to see Sonya's jaw dropping level of honesty manifest itself in her personal life....and her professional life.

     My favorite part of this episode came from the return of Charlotte, Ray, and Cesar. The Bridge's two biggest sources of comic relief come from Frye's attitude and the shenanigans of these 3 (specifically the arrogant and ignorant combination that is Ray). Many viewers have been unsure as to why the writers decided to keep them in the show, considering the way that their story seems to be completely disconnected from the rest of the show. In their first episode of the season, Charlotte, Ray, and Cesar find themselves in a very sticky situation (again, specifically Ray). If you think about the way that they run their "business" it is incredibly risky. Messing something up for their employer would be cause for concern, not only for income, but for their lives. I have been hoping that the writers will be able to find a way to make these fantastic characters relevant once again and I think they are on the right track.

     Also returning in this episode is the mumbling likes of Steven Linder. In this episode, you can expect Linder to discover something unwanted, but he will be happy about it (How's that for a tease?). Linder's fixation on Eva has always been one of the oddest parts of the show. Sporting a new beard, Linder would seem to be heading towards a revenge quest against the men that raped Eva. The only problem for Linder is that he seems to be more vengeful than Eva. I'm hoping for some more developments on this in the next episode.

     Meanwhile, Frye and Adrianna learn more about the cartel's business, both personally and financially. I worry about the future of these two characters because, like Linder and Charlotte, they are completely separated from the central story. While it's fun to watch them intersect with other story lines from time to time, it also means that writers can essentially kill them off even easier than in most shows. Combo this with the level of danger that Frye and Adrianna constantly put themselves in and one can easily start to make predictions. Speculation aside though, viewers can expect to see more of Raul Quintana as the story deepens.

     In the increasingly odd travels of Eleanor Nacht, Eleanor enlists the help of an innocent man and Kyle's friend, Dex in order to clean up the mess that she caused with Kyle. Frank Potente does a wonderful job in this episode as she finds an odd balance of somehow being "politely rude" with everyone she knows. While Eleanor is clearly useful for Fausto Galvan and the cartel, she also possesses an odd instinct about things that could lead her into unnecessary trouble. It's pure speculation on my behalf at this point, but it makes one wonder why the cartel is so willing to use someone that could risk their business. Does she have something she's holding over them perhaps?

Rating: 8.9/10 - The episode is certainly not perfect, but so far it's the best of the season.
