2014 Character Cup - Final Stats and Wrap-Up

31 Jul 2014

It's been 63 polls, but we finally have a winner. Congratulations to Dean Winchester of Supernatural, who also got the most votes of any contestant in the contest and was one of two contestants who received over 1,000 votes in each round. Congratulations also go to Janna, for wining out prediction contest with just 14 missed. You rocked! Awesome job! Bragging rights go to you! Other top predictors were Toni, Sharon Seymour, and Dahne, who all missed 16, and Famous 4 It, who missed 17 in total. It's been fun comparing how different the contest turned out and where people thought it would go.

Thanks so much to everyone who participated either through voting, predicting, or commenting. I have had a blast and I hope you did too. I appreciate you playing along and helping hiatus pass more quickly. This contest has been better than I ever dreamed it would be because of you. Thank you! Since I am a trivia fan and because I was asked to, I've gathered some general facts about the contest along with the final rankings below. Also by popular demand, I have been requested to hold a runner-off poll which will last for 24 hours as well, ending around 5 pm CST Thursday. I won't make another annoucement about it but enjoy. I am also putting a poll here about the nominating process next year. This year we were allowed to nominate two males and two females. This ended up with a very balanced contest with 33 females and 31 males included. The question is whether you would like to keep it this way or not have any stipulations on which 4 to nominate. This choice may lead to a majority of male characters in the contest, although we've never done it like this so it could still end up even. As always, happy commenting and voting!

Final Rankings: Other rankings will follow as we finish each round. All tiebreakers decided by percentage of the vote received.

  1. Glad you like the info. I sometimes geek out over stats. It would shock my former math teachers.

  2. Great winner and great that Vincent did not win

Could you please tell me if anyone else from Reign got any votes? Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  3. Actually, thinking about it, I don't want a Ben-Finch poll. I wouldn't know who to vote for and probably end up not voting.

You should submit that as a USDP.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Thanks for running this Dahne!

  5. I'm glad you are happy with the winner, but let's not be negative about anyone else. The contest has been a silly, fun little hiatus time filler so let's keep it positive.

Both Mary and Catherine were nominated from Reign.

  6. Thanks for participating. It's been a great time passing hellatus with you all.

i know it seems like alot, but could you make a list that totals all votes from all polls for each character? to see how much in comparison? it might be an interesting arrangement.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Ha! It would probably be a brain ache for many people.

I try not to create USD polls because it's the way people who are not part of the SpoilerTV team get to create content and I do a lot of polls here. However, I really like this topic so if no one else decides to take it up (I know someone out there really wants to do it), then I might just do it myself. :-)

  9. I submit the occasional one, usually when I have a poll topic on my mind for days and know it'll create loads of discussion.

    ReplyDelete
  10. It is not totaled up but the list of how much each character got in each round and what round they went out in is at the bottom of the rankings page: http://dahne1.blogspot.com/2014/07/2014-character-cup-rankings-and-brackets.html

  11. Thanks Dahne for the awesome competition! Also congratulations to Supernatural fans!

  12. Thanks for staying positive throughout the contest and reminding others. I really appreciate it. This contest was a lot of fun for me because of it.

  13. Good point. I think I've decided to use it as a TV Talk Topic next year, since I am going to be desperate for topics. :-)

  14. Congrats to Dean Winchester and SPN fans! This show has build such an amazing passionate community around it ,it will be studied by entertainment industry many years after.

Dean is my favorite TV character ever : tough, dedicated hero on the outside and big teddy bear with soft loving heart on the inside. Thanks you, Jensen, for making it alive and real so many people can connect to.

Congrats to Castle fans for such a great fight. Always a pleasure

Thanks, Dahne. I wouldn't say it was just plain fun for fans of final 4, I am pretty sure it was quite stressful, but competition involves some healthy stress. I am glad you were wrong about popularity of SPN nowadays and Dean in particular. This veteran is still kicking.

  15. how do you create polls?

    ReplyDelete
  16. It was a really well dons championship! Congrats from Brasil, a lot of fun :)

    ReplyDelete
  17. Do you mean the USD polls on SpoilerTV or polls in general?

    ReplyDelete
  18. It was fun. Mostly the discussions and some fan rallying. It was a contest for fun of course, but that didn't stop me from being a little competitive in a good way.

    ReplyDelete
  19. also great job on the character cup

    ReplyDelete
  20. It's really easy. Glad you are participating.

    1. Go to any USD poll. http://www.spoilertv.com/search/label/USDP

    2. Above the poll it will say, Click to Submit Your Poll Suggestion.

    3. Click on it and fill out the boxes and your poll will be submitted. Polls are randomly chosen each day.

  21. Thanks. It's been a lot of fun.

  22. I'm glad you had fun. Thank you for doing such a great job of keeping the conversation going. I have enjoyed conversing with you and all the great discussion.

    ReplyDelete
  23. so how do you create USD polls?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Ha! Actually the bottom slot meant that he was 5th in the overall rankings so that is one of the easier places to start from. It guarantees that he starts with less competition as all the top 8 ranked did. I did believe that Felicity would slightly beat him and that Jane and Vincent would go further in teh competition.

    ReplyDelete
  25. cool appreciate it =] also when are you gonna do another charter cup or show cup or something similar.

    ReplyDelete
  26. The next contest should be Adam's Best Show Contest in August. Then there will be the Year End awards in January although that is a different format than the contests. Next summer the Best Episode Competition and Character Cup will return.

    ReplyDelete
  27. cool thanks =]

    ReplyDelete
  28. Tell me you you guys retiring SPN in this one. I wouldn't survive another week of F5 abuse lol

    ReplyDelete
  29. The Best Show contest is the biggest one we have on SpoilerTV and I would imagine SPN will be in the contest like it always is. It has been the winner 3 out 4 times the contest has been run, so there will be plenty of people rooting against it. Surprisingly, I will be one of them unless it is up against a show I cannot stand. It's time to have a new winner crowned.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I like blabbing about my thoughts. ;)

Speaking of message sent on Twitter involving Dominion. I got a kick out of it.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Got it. Don't have time to watch the interview right now, because I'm working on the Teen Wolf podcast notes, but I'll watch it later.

    ReplyDelete
  32. So just retire it then. No needs to annoy people including yourself. I hate when people rooting and voting against. Its unfair and frustrating.

    ReplyDelete
  33. It's not my contest so it's not my rules. I can vote for and root for some other show without bringing down the room or turning it into a negative place so I am not sure how that is frustrating. There's nothing unfair about wanting something else to win either. It's the same thing as rooting against a rival sports team. In my family we believe in ABY, Anyone But Yankees. I don't have to be a jerk about it or insult other people when I root for whoever they are playing to win. And I will congratulate the winning show's fans no matter who they are and whether I like the outcome or not.

I don't think Supernatural has been good ever since Jeremy Carver took over as showrunner and it is the biggest disappointment I have had with a show to date. While I love Dean and Sam, I no longer love Supernatural. That is my main difference between voting for a character I love and voting for a show I can no longer stomach.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'm a sucker for stats! Thanks for putting these together!

I was surprised but the number of shows nominated - 170 is wonderful diversity!

    Whoop-Whoop - Stiles at #18! Next, top 10 baby!

Thanks again for running a great comp - as the coming season progresses, I'll jot down some ideas for topics for next year :-) Could make topic suggestions a part of the nomination process next year??

    ReplyDelete
  35. Stats are really cool until I have to do something mathematical with them and then I fall apart. I do love how many shows were nominated. Diversity helped me learn more about shows I did not know. I am looking forward to seeing what Stiles can do next year as either he or Ichabod are likely to be my favorite characters that actually make it into the contest. I love your idea about getting TV Talk Topics at the nomination stage. That would make things easier than trying to figure them out during the actual contest.

    ReplyDelete
  36. LOL - I'm an accountant so I kinda geek out over numbers :-)

I'm hoping that Ichabod goes further too, as well as someone from The 100. I'm surprised Melinda May got so far only because a lot of people wrote off AoS after a rather lack luster season prior to the Captain America movie tie in. Hoping she goes a bit further too now that there has been a lot of positive buzz surrounding the show and it's presumed tie in to the next Avengers movie.

Thanks again for a great competition! Surprised by the final match up but since I like both characters - was a win-win for me either way!

Since I plan to get into blogging this fall, I'm hoping it will get the creative juices flowing for competition topic ideas for next year!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Thanks for running this. As much as I grumbled, it was entertaining to see it unfold.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Please keep Vincent's name out of it he didn't do anything to you....Stay positive please.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Great competition, I have had a lot of fun. I was just a bit disappointed that my favorite characters were out very quick.
Looking forward for the next competition.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I am curious as to why there is a runner up poll? Isn't Beckett considered the runner up after all she was up against Dean.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Congrats to Dean Winchester fans.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Thanks for participating. I'm glad you had fun.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I think Ichabod will go farther as long long as Sleepy Hollow stays popular. It's biggest disadvantage is that it ended so long ago compared to most current running shows and of course there was onlt one season. I hope others check it out. I am happy Melinda went as far as she did as well. She's a great character.

Glad you decided to try your hand at blogging. If you end up on Bloggr, let me know if you need any help. I'm afraid I am not as proficient with Word Press though.

  44. I think all the contestants are winners. It took some doing to even get into the contest with so many nominations. 458 were nominated. Only 64 got in.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Thanks. I thought it ended up a fun way to pass hellatus.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I like that Buffy keeps going strong even after so many years has passed. It is challenging for cancelled shows to even get in much less end up in the top 10. Thanks for participating.

    ReplyDelete
  47. There's always next year so hopefully they will fare a little better as people got to hear about them. Thanks for participating.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Beckett is the runner-up. This is for 3rd and 4th place because I was requested to have a contest decide it instead of just number of votes like the others.

    ReplyDelete
  49. You're welcome and it was a pleasure.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Ambar Moreno Candelas31 July 2014 at 22:01

Dean Winchester is the best male character created in CW, besides Sam Winchester right now. I'm so happy, congratulations to all of us, the Supernatural fans :D Congratulations to the rest too! For me it has won the better. Jensen is a showman and he always act in a awesome limit!!!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I appreciate the offer and I may have to take you up on it! I'm not totally tech challenged but sometimes just randomly trying things doesn't get me where I need to be :-)

    ReplyDelete
  52. My friend and podcast partner, Lilith, is my tech guru. Whenever I'm stuck, I got to her. Always great to have someone like her.
