Welcome to round 3, where 64 have become 16. We have 4 more days of polls before we crown the Character Cup winner for 2014. Congratulations to Kate Beckett, Barney Stinson, Chandler Bing, and Regina Mills for making it to round 3. Today you can vote on the picture you want to represent all the characters in tomorrow's round, including these guys. As always, thanks for participating and being such delightful commentators. It has made this contest a joy already. Until tomorrow, happy voting!

Previous contest results - To see final rankings for all characters out in the second round, scroll to the bottom.

Polls end - Saturday around 5:00 pm CST

Prediction contest results - Yesterday's polls broke everyone's brackets. Yikes! I will post who is winning the contest overall tonight.

TV Talk Topic - Today the topic is kids/teens in TV. How do you feel about kids/teens being on typically adult shows? How do you feel about teen shows in general? Would you avoid a show where a kid/teen was a main character? Who are the best kids/teens on TV, now or in the past? Who are the worst? What do you think makes a great kid/teen character? What are some typical stereotypes you like to stop seeing kids/teens on TV perpetuate?

Picture Polls - Choose 1 picture you would liek to represent the character in round 3.

  1. TV Topic: Kids/Teens

For me, it really depends on the kid/teen. Usually I do NOT like kids/teens in my shows because the tendency is to follow the stereotypes of bratty kids and their hapless parents who cannot control them. Most kids/teens on TV I wish would be spanked and sent off my screen. However, there are a handful of teens who really made their shows for me. Obviously the teens of Teen Wolf avoid these stereotypes or I would never be able to watch the show much less love it. More importantly, the parents and teens all have healthy, respectful relationships with each other (well maybe not with DoucheDad but his name says it all) and each has an important role on the show. It's a balance that few shows meet. Veronica Mars did it very well too, creating a strong, dynamic character who just happened to be a teen. I would say that Buffy and the Scooby Gang are also great examples of how to write teens. Two other exemplary teens were Alexis in Castle and Ephraim in Everwood. They were initially why I started watching their series. Alexis made Castle bearable for me, in that his fatherly side gave me something to hold on to until the character himself became less obnoxious as the first season progressed. Ephraim provided the heart of Everwood for me, starting with how he took care of his little sister.

Still more often than not, TV gets teens and kids dead wrong and to be honest, they do the generation no favors. Connor and Dawn from Angel and Buffy are two of the worst TV teens ever. If I hadn't Loved their series before they came on, I would have dropped them. I did drop Finding Carter and Chasing Life for their obnoxious teens. I don't have time for that nonsense where every single thing is all about them. Barry from The Goldbergs is an example of a show fixing their mistakes with a character. He started out just obnoxious, but as the show itself calmed down they mellowed out the characters a fraction and made Barry one of the best parts of the show (after Murray of course).

  2. My Picks:

    1. Buffy - She's still a teen TV icon and changed the way that teen girls were portrayed on TV. A kick butt heroine instead of typical victim, Buffy was one of the first TV characters I was ever obsessed over.

    2. Archangel - Only because I tired of the Brennan and Booth saga a long, long time ago.

    3. Neither - I won't vote for Felicity until they fix her and I've only seen a couple episodes of Elijah

    4. Dean - This one is painful because I really like May, but no one beats Dean Winchester as a character for me. No one.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Patrick, Michael, Elijah, and Dean.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Just Dean Winchester today ;)

    About the pictures, my choices:

    Tyrion #2
    Damon #3
    Regina #3

  5. Just Felicity. And kids in TV are generally terrible in my experience. The writing for them is rarely good. The kid on The Following was just: go to bed, get kidnapped, go to bed, get kidnapped. Carl on Walking Dead is abhorrent. He lost in a fight to a door FFS. Kids who appear in like one episode are alright, but when the show tries to incorporate them as a recurring star/main cast member, it's not great.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Felicity and Buffy for me.

    ReplyDelete
  7. TV Topic:

I'm quite tolerate of TV kids considering the hate Henry (OUAT) and other youth get on TV. Some can get really annoying, the key is in writing of course. Overall, I don't mind them if they have a purpose for being on the show. And Jacob from Resurrection is a great kid.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Buffy, Bones, Felicity, Melinda... Grrrrl power.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Buffy, Brennan, Felicity (Just) and Dean for me today.

    ReplyDelete
  10. "For me, it really depends on the kid/teen." - Exactly this. Well, almost exactly. Even with a great child actor/actress and an interesting part to play, it's still very easy for a writer to screw it up by giving a kid material they can't handle or dialogue that isn't very kid-like.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Only Melinda May for me today.
We're getting close from the finale

    ReplyDelete
  12. Very true. Writing still has to be good writing for any character. While an established actor can sometimes rise above poor writing, it is harder for a kid to and there are just some things that a kid would never say. Sometimes adults forget that.

    ReplyDelete
  13. ha! Losing to a door is pretty bad.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Yep. Adult actors can overcome deficiencies on the page through what they bring to the role or by suggesting alternate dialog or action. Kids though, you have to get it exactly right because most go strictly by what's on the page in front of them. There's a very slim margin for error.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I get the Henry hate on OUaT since he and Emma drove me from that show. However I agree that Jacob does a really good job for a kid on Resurrection. Bixby was my favorite character and I felt she had more to add to the story, so I was sorry to see her go. She softened Alex up and his character needs that.

  17. 1. I don't watch either show, but I've gone Patrick. Just.

    2. Bones. Never even heard of the other show.

    3. Felicity, because well, she's Felicity!!

    4. N/A - I don't care for either.

Topic - OTH was one of the favourite, favourite, favourite shows, and Jamie was one of the many reasons why. I adore Kira on Orphan Black and essentially she's the key to the clones. The only other show I watch that focuses on teens is Pretty Little Liars, and well, does that really need an explanation?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Very close. It should be about 4 days until we crown a winner!

    ReplyDelete
  19. I've liked what I've seen of Kira so far on Orphan Black. She's a kid that has a purpose and that's important.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Tough choice to choose just one picture of Vincent Keller, but I guess #2 for me. Oh this is hard, all of his pictures are just tooo...adorable.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Already ?
Is there will be another competition after this one ?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Here for the king, Dean Winchester, as usual.

When it comes to kids and teens, I like them on TV when I can relate to them. That's why I loved watching them when I was one myself. As I grew older, I completely lost interest in them in the same way I stopped watching cartoons (which I was addicted to), overnight.

My favorite kid on TV was Elijah Wood. I was in awe of him. He was a natural and I couldn't get enough of him. Plus, he rarely played the stereotypical obnoxious, back-talking brat who always gets on my nerves. Nowadays, I'll watch a movie with kids in it if they're not the main attraction, meaning they have to interact with adults a LOT for me not to get irritated (Hide and Seek, The Sixth Sense, etc. I know these movies are old lol, I just needed well-known titles to illustrate my point).

    ReplyDelete
  23. Went with Jane and Brennan again don't watch the other shows.

I will have to think about today's topic,i generally don't care for teens or kids in adult shows, but there are exceptions.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Buffy &, of course, Dean. Hey wouldn't it be great to have Buffy show up on SPN!
As I rule I found myself hating TV kids and quite frequently find myself wanting them to die (yeah I know that's bad, Right now I want Matt on Falling Skies, Henry on OUAT, the kid on Extant, and the teens on Under the Dome to just all have fatal accidents. I can take older teens but only if they don't make them to whiny and smart-alecky. I will say Carl on Walking Dead got a lot better last year.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I can totally see growing out of kids/teens of TV. That makes a lot of sense to me. I too thought Elijah Wood was great from the time I saw him in Radio Flyer.

    ReplyDelete
  26. 1. Buffy
    2. Michael
    3. Felicity
    4. Dean (sorry Melinda)

I don't have problem with kids/teens in TV unless they are bratty, spoiled, acts like world is going around them, never listens what parents/adult saying, always does opposite than to what parents/adult told. Even in my teen days i never liked kids/teens in tv shows who acts like that.
Some kids/teens can make me drop a tv show (Henry from OUaT, Bo from Believe...)

Buffy, Bones, Elijah!, Dean. I do think Felicity is awesome but Elijah will always have my heart (well not literally then I wouldn't be alive) and May is still too new to win over Dean who I have been watching for so many years.

    ReplyDelete
  28. None for me today, but I did participate in 2 of the picture polls. #2 of Olivia Dunham and #3 of Regina Mills :)

  29. Thee should be a Best Show contest that Adam runs every year. I'm not sure when it is starting though. Usually in August.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Ha! Glad you got to vote for something at least.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Elijah IS a vampire right? He probably would be glad to have your heart....or your neck or....

    ReplyDelete
  32. When I was a teen, kids on TV that acted that way were like aliens to me. There was no way my parents or any of my friends' parents would let us get away with sassing back like they do on TV. It's frustrating and annoying.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I was kind of hoping that when SPN first did vampires that Dean would snark about a campire slayer. It would haved been completely in character and a great reference. Hey, I completely understand about wanting kids off. I was hoping Henry never got out of that tunnel in season 1. The kid on Extant is giving androids a bad name. Time for a software upgrade for him too.

    ReplyDelete
  34. For me, I usually find that kids either enhance the show or distract from it badly. I rarely have middle ground.

Buffy is the only one i could really support on this round.. Other than that i went with Felicity as well.

  36. Rabia Salvatore26 July 2014 at 02:51

I think Elijah's signature move is ripping out hearts, he does it two at a time actually- saves time. But he's also quite a stand-up guy, tries to do the right thing (minus *spoiler* falling for his brother's baby mama from a one night stand). He says things like "you have my word" and 90% of the time follows through, also doesn't kill people randomly (at least not as far as we have seen), it's always people the audience doesn't like or protecting his family. Of course he did fall for Katherine too so he has that weakness.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Voted in all 4 polls today :)

    1) Buffy Summers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Come on it's Buffy! I don't watch The Mentalist

    2) Archangel Michael, Dominion - Love the show and the character, I don't really consider Bones as a show I watch.

    3) Felicity Smoak, Arrow - I don't watch Arrow or The Originals anymore but I always loved Felicity, I never really had much of an opinion about Elijah.

    4) Melinda May,Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - I just prefer May over Dean, Dean annoyed me too often, it was just the way he was written in later seasons unfortunately.

Picture Polls: I only voted for the first Regina picture.

Today's TV Topic: Normally I don't like kids on TV, normally because they just can't act well. I don't like Henry on OUAT and I didn't like Ben on Falling Skies or Carl on The Walking Dead when I was watching those two shows. I did really like Bixby on Dominion, shame she was killed off :P I also liked Naomi Wildman on Star Trek: Voyager but she was only a recurring character. I only watched two and a half seasons of Star Trek: TNG but from what I saw of it I didn't mind Wesley Crusher, i'm not sure why everyone hated him so much.
Teens on TV I don't have a problem with, it's usually the shipping and crazy fans that go with them that I have a problem with. Teen Wolf and The 100 are examples where I have no problem whatsoever with the fact they are teens, they don't really act like it most of the time either. None of the teenagers on Reign seem like teenagers at all. I also like all the teens on Pretty Little Liars. I loved Shawn on The 4400 too, I was so sad that got cancelled. There aren't really many teen characters I don't like but for me the worst teen character on TV was Ashley on Sanctuary, I was so glad they killed her off.

    ReplyDelete
  38. First time I had a NA in the voting...

    1. Jane
    2. NA (haven't seen Dominion yet and Brennan is the reason I dropped Bones)
    3. Felicity
    4. Dean.

That last one was the hardest...I ultimately went with Dean just cuz I've been a SPN fan for so long!

Today's Topic: I'd take teens over kids - I am not a kid person in real life so watching them on TV is generally not my thing - especially when they are spoiled brats or do stupid things that cause problems for the adults. Recent exception to this was Jacob on Resurrection.

That being said, some of my favorite characters are teenagers - Veronica Mars is a prime example. She was smart and sassy yet her recklessness made her believable/reminded us that she was still a teenager. Likewise, the teens on Teen Wolf are great - I love the parent/teen relationships as much as the relationships between the teenagers themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  39. lol That is funny. XD I watch The Walking Dead and didn't remember that scene. Yeah, he's not the smartest kid on the block.

  40. lostrocks4ever26 July 2014 at 04:23

Couldn't vote in the first two coz don't watch any of those shows. And of course for the second to I like all the characters so it was a little harder but luckily not too difficult.
While I find Elijah to be the ony good character in the originals. I do love felicity and she may be my favourite character in arrow and I actually like most of those guys so I went with her
Second was also not too tough. The only thing that made me hesitate picking dean over May was how badly he's been written recently and how terrible I found the last season when compared to shield. But one shitty season isn't enough compared to 7 and a half great seasons of one of my favourite characters ever so I had to go with dean

    ReplyDelete
  41. Buffy, Temperance, and Dean were no brainers....had to think about Felicity and Elijah.... Felicity got my vote.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I wish May had gone up against someone else so I could vote for both, but my reasoning is the same. I've liked May for one season. I loved Dean, despite the writers for 7. Dean wins.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I don't watch many (any?) non-sitcoms that have bratty kids. Bratty kids on television tend to be stereotyped and consequently one dimensional. Which to me says bad writer so I'd likely not be watching.

Veronica Mars "teens" were, for me college students in teen suits. I loved the show, but I never took that cast as high school kids. Buffy's was a great example of how to write teens. Kyle XY is an example that sticks out i my head as a good example.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Ha! Good to know he's not your typical vampire. The two-fisted heart tug is impressive here. I here Katherine caused a lot of males to lose brain cells, so I guess he's just one in the crowd there.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Woo hoo! Glad you coudl vote in all of them. That must mean you have more favorite characters still in this contest.

It is hard to find decent child actors. They just don't have enough experience to pull from and you can almost see people off camera giving them physical cues at times. It can be distracting. Wesley was hated mostly because the writers ended up making him the biggest goody goody this side of the galaxy and gave me incredibly bad lines. Just horrible. I of course started watching STNG simply because of Wil Wheaton, after he did the amazing Stand By Me. For me liking teen characters is the exception, not the norm but I would say that Teen Wolf and The 100 do teens very well.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I'm surprised you went so long on the N/A to be honest. I feel like I've been doing that every other round. Good for you.

I would rather watch teens usually than kids as well, but that's generally because they tend to be better actors. I think Teen Wolf and The 100 work especially because they are in atypical situations, which require them to grow up quicker. The normal stuff of teens should not really apply to them and that's part of the issue I am having with this throwback season of Teen Wolf. Glad they are moving away from that in the last 2 episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  47. In all honesty, I look at all "high school" shows and laugh. Nothing new there. None of them ever look like the high school kids in any district I've worked in. They tend not to talk or act like them either. Veronica Mars was definitely grown up for her age, however I think that her experiences helped her mature faster than most. I guess that excuses a lot for me. It's similar to Teen wolf and The 100 in that regard. If people or circumstances are trying to kill you, you have to develop advanced coping and leadership skills quickly.

    ReplyDelete
  48. As much as I love Felicity, I had to choose Elijah. I've loved him since s2 of TVD!
    And Melinda May! :D

    ReplyDelete
  49. And I don’t think that’s a bad thing. It's not a sin. But, in answering the question, I forced myself to be a little more stringent. :-)

I think the difference is when I look back on Veronica Mars it never felt to me like th writers were giving us teens…giving us great characters but not teens. On Teen Wolf, the writers seem to remember that these are high school kids. We get small moments that remind us that these are kids, like the panic over the grandma kiss, worrying about grades, stuff like that.

I wonder if the fact that the staff is usually working with adults (20s and even in some cases into their 30s) a larger part of that success equation.

    ReplyDelete
  50. My last vote in whole compatition goes to Elijah.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Buffy and Melinda for me.

Re Kids on TV, I'm not interested in shows that are mostly focused on teens especially if it involves high school drama. I've had my share of good shows in that setting like Buffy or Freeks and Geeks but the older I get the less interested I am in the dramas of teens.

But I think young characters can work in shows but its down to acting and writing, look at GOT its as far away from High School as possible, these kids are barely children anymore they have been forced to become aduits and have to deal with so much horrifying stuff but its not just that the actors they get have been golden, look at the Stark kids not one dud, even little Rickon who didn't have a lot to do had moments of heartbreaking brilliance.

Another example of good acting are Marshall and Kate Gregson in the criminally underrated United States of Tara, I especially thought Keir Gilchrist did a great job in the role and the entire coming out storyline was handled a million times better than I've seen on teen shows.

Then you get good actors handed bad storylines, unlike some I always thought Morgan Saylor did an amazing job as Dana Brody in Homeland but unfortunately the writers decided to focus on her problems a bit too much and it made the audience hate her.

    ReplyDelete
  52. All right, I will be there then.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Jane, Felicity and Melinda May. Ack!! I wasn't expecting such a close gap between Jane and Buffy.

I love kids in comedy shows. I really enjoyed Trophy Wife while it was on, and classics like Married with Children crack me up. Modern Family has a great cast too. Teen problems can be hilarious, but when you try and make them into a pure 'drama for the sake of drama' show, it becomes annoying. I never liked Veronica Mars, but I think it worked because it wasn't just about their social lives like Gossip Girl and OTH, but it also had the whole mystery element. Similarity, I assume that's why The 100 is successful. Teenagers in a dystopian world is still different from typical teenage drama.

I think TV has got a bit better at how they use teens and kids on shows. Eg Henry on OUAT is a super important player in the show, and all our favourite characters work around him and are generally motivated by their love for him. And it's done in such a way that we don't have too focus too much on him all the time. So while he's the glue holding everything together, the plot is not confined to what Henry can or cannot do. And I think it works really well.

That being said, I still tend to shy away from shows with teenagers as the main character. 90210, Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars...definitely not my cup of tea. I don't mind them in an ensemble cast with other older characters though. It's always good to have a range of characters.

Ah... looks like we'll be saying goodbye to May soon. Voted for Patrick, Temperance, and Melinda.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Most of the characters I liked were in round 1A, my top favourites in the competition other than Regina are already gone I'm afraid, and 3 of the 4 I voted for here are losing but oh well :P
That's what most people say when I ask them about Wesley, he just got too annoying and even more so as the show went on.

    ReplyDelete
  56. 1. Buffy
    2. Michael
    3. Felicity
    4. Dean

    ReplyDelete
  57. "...but the older I get the less interested I am in the dramas of teens."

That's exactly how i feel. I loved Buffy, and i own the chosen collection. I watched Teen Wolf up to a couple of episodes ago, because it reminded me of Buffy.

I completely agree about Morgan Saylor. I think she is an amazing young actress. I didn't mind her in seasons 1&2, because it fit the story, and her reactions made sense. But in season 3, i hate (i'm up to ep 8) her storyline, and wish she would go away.

I definitely works in Game of Thrones, with the Stark children. For me it mostly works in The Walking Dead, with Carl, and Lizzie's storylines. Also Bo in Believe, was a perfect example of how to write children.

The only show i still watch, that focuses on teens, is The 100. That seem to be a bit different. It focuses on their survival on a savage Earth. And switches back and forth with the Adults.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Today's vote Brennan, Buffy, Felicity, sorry Melinda Deans got this round, I knew this would get tuff when the heavyweights meet up:( and Tv topic I don't know if sitcom would apply but, I love the character Sue Heck on the Middle that kid has faced all kind of rejections in her daily struggles, she never ever gives up she comes back with a smile on her face that show is so underrated, I like Alexis on Castle she turned bratty very briefly where, I wanted to choke her off my tv but, now she's back to the sweetheart I love!

    ReplyDelete
  59. I'm going say, that probably had something to do with, the downfall of Starcrossed if they remotely looked like teenagers that probably could have, let ppl connect to the show, to me they just looked to old to be pretending to still be in High school

    ReplyDelete
  60. I'm glad you watch Resurrection, I love that show, I love Jacob even more, he's a terrific little actor, you feel everything he feels!!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Me too actually - my left side brackets were in better shape that the right and I still voted if I watched the show and liked the character even if they weren't my bracket pick but I expect a lot of NA's in the 3B voting...all but Beckett are out for me on that side!

Agreed - TW and T100 work because they are forced to be adults yet when they do the occasional stupid thing, I can chalk it up to them still being a teenager and being forced to grow up in dire circumstances. Maybe that's the key - I have to have a valid reason for them to act stupid beside teenage angst.

I am working today but tomorrow is set aside for binge watching S2 of TW. I'm so excited - especially seeing that trailer from SDCC!

    ReplyDelete
  62. I think the big downfall of Star-Crossed is they marketed it as another teen romance and a hokey one at that when a vast amount of the show was not about that. If they had focused more on the sociopolitical in the advertising and if they had made it about college students instead of high school, I think it would have gone far. The show felt bipolar at times. People going in expecting a straight up star-crossed romance felt it had too little of it and those who would have enjoyed the sociocultural aspects avoided a freaking teen romance like the plague,

    ReplyDelete
  63. I feel like Teen Wolf is regressing to the teen stuff of season 1 again, so I tentatively agree with you there. I think a tight focus on the plot and a rapid pace helps them more. A lot of people are getting distracted nowadays by the ever older actors playing rarely older characters though.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Resurrection was one of the biggest surprises of the season for me because it's glacial pace should make me easily bored but it didn't. I was fascinated by the whole scenario.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Sorry to hear your favorites are pretty much gone too. I have 3 characters I still like. 1 is going to lose unfortunately to the character I dislike most in the contest and the other 2 are against each other. Still I am happy that I could participate this long. That usually doesn't happen.

    ReplyDelete
  66. That TW trailer was intense. I generally judge the intensity of things based on Mama McCall's reactions so now I am worried about all the characters. I think you might be on to something with being able to excuse their stupidity some times. I judge Teen Wolf harder than most because it is one of my favorite shows, so their occasional bouts of brain dead do irk me but maybe not as much as they would if they were adults. I'll still call them out on it but not drop the show because of it.

My right side bracket is a mess. I have 3 people I can vote for but none I am super enthused about.

    ReplyDelete
  67. People are dropping like flies now. By the final four it should be very rough for many.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I am not a fan of high school drama myself, although to be fair I am not a fan of adult emoangsting either. I find it largely a buzzkill and waste of plot time. I think that's why the only shows with significant teen time I end up watching are supernatural where the plot largely drives the story or comedies.

    ReplyDelete
  69. At this point, the Ark storyline on The 100 is more interesting to me than the teens, but what i am really hoping for is more info on the grounders and other earth survivors.

    ReplyDelete
  70. "I don't mind them in an ensemble cast with other older characters though. It's always good to have a range of characters."

I agree. If a show has teens and they are not the focus, I tend to stick with them longer than shows that do focus primarily on teens. For me the teens in Trophy Wife were fun, and Bert stoler the show a lot. I also adore the teens in The Goldbergs. It is easier to take teen drama when you are laughing at it.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I feel the same way about Buffy, although I should probably be grateful that I won't have to choose between her and Dean at any time.

  72. The first "teen show" I got into was Dawson's Creek and I remember being really confused because they were all so adult. I remember asking my mom if this was really how teenagers talked because if it was then I was doing it wrong.
And yet looking back it was kind of breakthrough, they talked about everything teens were thinking about, mostly sex, but also parents divorcing, having mixed parents, dating, what to do after a breakup, alcohol, homosexuality... A lot of teen shows today are not so concerned about all of that. Mostly they put pretty 20-year-olds to act as 15-year-olds and they dress them up in the most revealing outfits imaginable and make them have sex with just about anybody.
Some shows start out great and then end up meh, like The O.C. . I remember watching the first episode and being very impressed, first with the story: a teenager abandoned by his mother who moves out of their house while he's in jail; and also by Ben McKenzie who was brilliant (and he still is). But the beginning was really where it peaked, afterwards the whole poor kid/extremely rich kids story ran in circles pretty quickly. It was very similar with One Tree Hill, the idea of two brothers growing up together but apart and being forced to play basketball together was great, even the side story of the pretty smart sidekick (Hailey) falling for the "bad" brother (Nathan) was pretty smart, but then as episodes progressed it got so entangled in sex triangles that it fell apart.

  73. I've only seen one episode of The Middle, but Sue definitely stuck out to me. She's motivated for sure and that in itself makes her a relief from the stereotypes of teens.

  74. My first "teen" show I think was BH 90210, the original. I got hooked on the reruns my first summer of college but then dropped it pretty quickly once I went back to school in the fall. Next was Dawson's Creek. I remember people nailing it for the unrealistic vocabulary but to be honest, it made me feel a little better for watching a teen show when I was teaching teens vocabulary. I watche dit until Andy adn Pacey were the only ones I even liked and then sropped it too. It did tackle a lot of hot button issues though and I found Andy's mental illness particularly poignant until it all went to pieces.

  75. Dahne, you're absolutely right and I completely agree with you, you nailed the essence of what could have been an entertaining show!!!

  76. I loved Star-Crossed, but if I hadn't been reviewing every new show I might have skipped it; the advertising did not appeal to me at all. For as much as Mark Pedowitz has been making great strides in the CW, the marketing and promotion departments still suck otu loud. Worst in the business.

  77. Aw that sucks :/ Most of my tough decisions were at the start of the contest :P The only possible tough decisions that could happen for me would be May vs Michael then one of those vs Regina. But it doesn't look like May or Michael will get through. Any others id vote for are all from shows I don't watch anymore or shows that ended. Im looking forward to seeing who wins and the discussions as well though :)

  78. I am loving the discussions too so hopefully everyone whose characters are gone will still come back to discuss with us.

  79. Yes, I forgot about Andy. She was quite touching and I loved how delicate Pacey was with her. He was my favorite character.

  80. And I honestly never understood how Katherine did it - make men lose brain cells - because she's so annoying and she can't utter a single sentence without making it a bon mot. And she's so incredibly selfish, I never understood how someone like Elijah could fall for her.

  81. TV logic - the more awful someone is, the more others want them...and want to reform them.

  82. Pacey was my favorite too from about one-third of the way into the first season. I stopped watching when they graduated high school though so I don't know any of the college characters. i agree that most of the actors in Dawson's Creek were great in teen roles and even better as adults.

  83. I voted for Buffy, Felicity, and Melinda.

  84. Yes, Carl is totally obnoxious!

  85. Most teens on TV do exactly what you say you don't like...so I would cheerfully drown a lot of them on TV now...sad, I know.

  86. It's the "white knight" syndrome, or "rescuer" in the case of a female.

  87. I agree about Jacob. The actor who plays him is really good but also the character is very important to the plot. Also the fact that he isn't annoying and acts like a kid (despite the weird stuff). I hate when kids are written like they are adults like the kid in OTH (Jamie?)

  88. Yeah Jamie was a little too grown up for his age huh?

  89. Jacob is one of the few kid characters that i feel is actually essential to the story being told. I think that's why i don't mind when he's on screen.

  90. Me too. If I were a teen, I would be up in arms about how people always protray my generation. I work with a lot of teens and while they all have their bratty days, it isn't their default setting and it would be nice if TV would showcase the positive side of teens as well.

  91. Of course, that's also true of TV dads. Most are portrayed at bumbling idiots, unworthy of any respect, unlike the rather benevolent dads of TV past. So dads get no respect either, and often times moms as well. In fact, TV families are almost always portrayed today as totally dysfunctional, which, to me, says more about the families of the writers than it does of families in society at large!

  92. Absolutely! Sitcoms in the early 2000's were particularly bad at this. It was supposed to be funny watching them snipe at each other all day btu it just depressed me. I know a few totally dysfunctional families but for the most part TV families have no grasp in reality.

  93. Yes! I loved Trophy Wife. It was hilarious. I wasn't following it, but I'd catch it on TV now and then. So sad it got cancelled :(
