2014 Character Cup - 2D

25 Jul 2014

Updated ~10 pm CST - Time is running away with me and I totally forgot to get your opinions on the pictures to use for the rest of the contest, so if you could take a look at the pictures polls below the character polls and vote your choice I would appreciate it. I'll look at them a few hours before the character polls close to create the new ones. Thanks so much for participating as always! And a special thanks to everyone who submitted pictures. I do really appreciate it.

Congratulations to Vincent Keller, Olivia Dunham, Tyrion Lannister, and Damon Salvatore for continuing to round 3. Again we had some very tight races with Damon vs. Walter White separated by a mere 7 votes - a new record for this contest. Here's hoping today's polls provide as much excitement. Remember to keep those pictures coming for characters going into round 3 and thanks so much to everyone who has already sent pictures. You can get them to me by either posting them in the comments, e-mailing them to me at dahne@spoilertv.com, or tweeting them to @dahne1. I appreciate any help you can give. Until tomorrow, keep commenting and happy voting!

Previous contest results - To see final rankings for all characters out in the first round, scroll to the bottom.

Polls end - Friday around 5:30 pm CST

Prediction contest results - Sharon Seymour and It Depends on What Fails got 100% correct today. Congrats!

TV Job - Yep, I am putting you to work. I've selected pictures for this round but chances are you have better ones. Therefore, it's your job to find a picture of anyone moving into round 3 or be stuck with the first thing I found on Google Image. You can pop a picture into the comments below, e-mail me at dahne@spoilertv.com, or tweet me @dahne1.  Guidelines:

1. Must be fully clothed and PG please!
2. Clearly shows the character's face
3. Is just the character and not a group thing
4. No gifs - jpeg or png only please

TV Talk Topic - Today the topic is spin-offs, courtesy of Emma. Thanks! Do you like spin-offs? What are your favorites? Which ones didn't work for you? What does it take to make a good spin-off? What are common spin-off mistakes? Are there any shows in which you would like a spin-off?

Picture Polls - Choose which one you want to represent the character. Any pictures too big may be cropped.

  1. 1. None - I stopped liking Kate once Castle became about her romance with Castle and I haven't watched Bates Motel.

    2. Finch - I really like Barney…in the few episodes I've seen of him. I watched Finch grow more so he gets my vote.

    3. Emily - mostly because I tend to find Friends overrated and Emily is smart and devious, a mental kick butt female…when she's not going completely overboard

    4. Veronica - I don't watch OUaT but what I did, I loved Regina. Still Veronica was such a refreshing atypical character that I cannot vote against her. She rocks!

  2. Norma, Finch and Chandler.

Poor Norma, she doesn't stand a chance.

  3. Kate Beckett, Barney Stinson, Chandler Bing, and Veronica Mars.

  4. Kate Beckett, Harold Finch, and Veronica Mars.

  5. For me it depends on the spin-off if I like it or not. I don't have to like the original show to enjoy a spin-off and sometimes I don't like spin-offs of shows I actually enjoy. It's all about which characters go and how well the plot moves. Two of my favorite spin-offs are Angel from Buffy and NCIS:LA from NCIS, which itself was a spin-off from JAG. I also loved Primeval: New World and Star Trek: Next Generation. Past favorites include The Facts of Life, Laverne and Shirley, Happy Days, Flo, A Different World, Young Americans, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Just the 10 of Us, She-ra, Xena, The Bionic Woman, and Benson.

I usually prefer my spin-offs to contain characters from the old show instead of just be backdoor piloted on one. That is a rip-off to me and smacks of trying to use the fans to promote a new show. Sometimes it works but they get a serious side eye from me first. The number of shows that I would like a spin-off for are innumerable. Basically any show I love with too many characters or where my favorite characters are being shafted in plot or screen time. I still think that Teen Wolf needs to let the kids graduate and spin them off. Either they can make a college Teen Wolf with the same characters or my favorite version has Lydia and Derek solving crimes together somewhere in a completely platonic relationship. I would also love for an Arrow spin-off where Diggle can get out of the freaking Arrow Cave and Thea (pre whatever nonsense they did to her character at the end of season 2) and Roy can have their own adventures.

  6. Norma Bates, Harold Finch and Regina Mills

  7. You're right. I'm throwing her a pity vote.

  8. Now that I've seen Bates Motel ;
    Norma, Regina and Emily.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Norma
    Barney
    Chandler
    Regina

It's too bad Norma got paired up with Beckett, makes it almost an automatic loss for Norma. :(

    ReplyDelete
  10. Norma, Barney, Chandler, Veronica. Maybe two of those have a chance to win.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Finch and Chandler.

  12. I had to go with Finch, Chandler and Regina... Haven't decided who or if i'll vote for Kate or Norma?

I'll come back for today's TV Topics.

    ReplyDelete
  13. 1. Norma
    2. Finch
    3. Chandler
    4. Regina

    ReplyDelete
  14. 1. Beckett. I adore Stana.

    2. Barney. I don't watch PoI.

    3. This was hard. Very hard. I've gone with Emily Thorne, but I'm nearly 100% Chandler will get through, which will make be very happy either way.
    4. N/A. Haven't seen either show and I have no interest in them.

    Topic - Spin offs.
I watch NCIS LA, obviously the spin off of NCIS, and I actually prefer it to the original. I also watch Chicago PD, which is the spinoff of Fire, and I love both shows. If I watch the original, I usually give the spin off a chance, but I don't think I will with The Flash, I meet my one superhero/justice league quota with Arrow..

    ReplyDelete
  15. Although i haven't completely stopped watching Castle i missed 3/4 of the season and didn't miss it. I got turned off to the show too once they decided the 'Romance' was the priority.

    ReplyDelete
  16. As more people become aware of and watch Bates Motel, she will likely have mre nominations and have a higher ranking.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Chandler is doing far better than I ever would have predicted. Normally I would say he didn't have a chance but I think it will be close now and he'll end up moving on.

    ReplyDelete
  18. My favorite characters were always Ryan, Esposito, Alexis, and Martha so the romance did nothing for me except feel like it was taking even more time away for my favs.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Voting was easy for me today - Beckett, Finch, Thorne, and Mars. Regina Mills can be an awesome character and the actress does a great job - but I don't think a single character on OUAT has been given a consistent story or characterization from the writers. The actors can only do so much. I haven't seen any other of the choices in today's polls.

I am not sure if I like spin-offs to be honest. I think a good spin off doesn't try to recreate the original program - but explores some unique aspect of the show more like side characters or the universe. This in theory sounds fantastic, but most of the ones I have seen really lack something.

I would love to see a spin-off of Leverage where Parker, Eliot and Hardison have helped set up multiple teams of con artists who help people. It should consistently explore their backgrounds.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Norma, Finch, Neither, Regina

I guess my favorite spin-offs are Angel, The Colbert Report, Torchwood, Star Trek – TNG & The Originals. Usually don't care for procedural spin-offs like Law & Order type shows and comedy spin-offs usually don't work for me, although I admit I liked Mama's Family. Does Agents of Shield count as a spin-off?

    ReplyDelete
  21. NCIS and NCIS:LA is interesting for me because my favorite character out of all of them is Abby on NCIS but I like the cast of characters better on LA as a whole. Now I haven't seen any of the Kensi and Deeks romance years so that will probably change. If it does, I am rooting for Hetty to flip over to NCIS and run things there.

I am leery about The Flash because for as many as I watch, I really do not like superheroes. My favorite thing about Arrow before Tommy was that there were no metahumans or alien powers. With mirakuru things changed but I was already frustrated with Arrow by that point. On Flash, I liked the 2 episodes in Arrow much better than I expected to but the whole thing is metahuman. I guess I am cautiously optimistic.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Shame no one I voted for made it through the last round.
Just voted for Regina today, Once Upon a Time is the only show up there I watch.

Today's TV Topic: I love spin-offs for the simple reason they expand a universe I already love :) My favourite spin-off is Stargate Universe which remains my all-time favourite show :) I also loved Stargate Atlantis, both spin-offs I liked better than the mother show, I hate that they were both cancelled :( The only Star Trek series I liked was Voyager. I also liked both Battlestar Galactica spin-offs, Caprica and Blood & Chrome, shame both were cancelled. I really liked Once Upon a Time in Wonderland too but that was also cancelled :P I'd love to see more OUAT spin-offs. I'd also be interested to see a spin-off of the The 100. Oh, and if Teen Wolf doesn't get a spin-off I'll riot

    ReplyDelete
  23. 1 - Got to be mama Bates, haven't watched the shows second episode yet but let's put it this way: Normans mom is a piece of movie history. How couldn't she win this round agains Kate 'Love Interest` Beckett

2 - Finch. Not even a question for me, after HIMYMs ending every thought related to this piece of turd is negative by default

    3 - Chandler...nostalgia

4 - VERONICA!!! Not just because I loved the show but because Mrs Mars is THE way to write a strong woman perfectly. She doesen`t need to be stronger or more powerfull than anyone else. It's about the smarts

btw. can I just mention my incredible joy with Elijah beating Red? I love Red (and Spader) but Elijah is just the one character that got me back into the dried out vampire genre

Personally I liked DS9 better because of the whole darker side of the Federation plot lines, but Janeway was the best Captain. SGU suffered from a slow start, Robert Carlyle was awesome though.

Personally, I like spinoffs if they make sense. Not just because. For instance a Supernatural spinoff makes little sense when you think about it because a major part of the show is the Sam/Dean relationship. On the other hand take my favorite spinoff on TV right now, Major Crimes. The main actress wanted to leave but they had another character in the wings that could take lead and they could essential evolve the show around a slightly different concept.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Either Seven or The Doctor, I really loved both of them :) I didn't like Kes or Chakotay (if I'm spelling that right).

    ReplyDelete
  26. The reason Kate Beckett is going to beat Norma this round is because she is one a much bigger show that more people have watched, despite teh Bates family legacy in Hollywood history. :-) Sorry HIMYM was irrevocably ruined for you. I hate hearing longtime fans being so unhappy by something the showrunners decide. It's frustrating.

I absolutely agree about Veronica. She wasn't physically tough in a beat everyone up way but she had a mental toughness that I found very appealing. Mostly though she broke the stereotypes on TV at the tiem of what a teenager was supposed to be and became a role model to so many. It was great seeing teens look up to someone for their brains, determination, and perseverance. In all honesty, I would like to see more Veronica's on TV today.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I just couldn't get into any of the other Trek shows at all for some reason. Sam & Dean's relationship on SPN was never a reason I watched the show personally, when the story started to go downhill for me I stopped watching.

    ReplyDelete
  28. No one I voted for made it either. I think that's going to be mor the norm for me now than the exception. I would lvoe to see another OUaT spin-off as well. While I did not love Wonderland mostly because of ALice and Cyrus, I did love Will and Ana. If they did a spin-off adventure with them where it wasn't big lovey dovey speeches all the time, I coudl really love playing in that world.

With The 100, to be honest, I hope that Lincoln and Octavia do not join the others right away. I want them to explore some of the other clans in the area and give me a better layout of the land. I would definitely be down for a prequel also, where we saw things from a grounder viewpoint. Yes also to a Teen Wolf spin-off. I'd prefer for Derek to have his own show but really I'm up for anything that will get that crime against humanity Ridiculousness trash off the air more often and take all those teen moms with it. I'd like not to be embarrassed by the fact that I watch an MTV show.

    ReplyDelete
  29. For me a Supernatural spin-off would make sense, but only if it were jump started by some of the characters who periodically appear on SPN. No spin-off in name only. For instance, I am still advocating for the Grumpy Old Hunters prequel spin-off starring Rufus and Bobby. I'd give money to get that one on the air.

I also like Major Crimes. In fact, I like it better than The Closer with the exception of always aiming for the plea bargain. That never does sit well with me.

Actually voted in all 4 today! Kate Beckett (I'm on season 6 now yay), Chandler and Barney, I've seen ~2 Seasons of HIMYM and various Friends (kind of want to go back and watch some of the earlier episodes). Veronica Mars! Finally went back yesterday and watched the end of season 5. Excited to watch the movie now :D. Sad that Ichabod didn't make it (is it strange I want to nickname him Ichy?).

    Harold and Regina :-)

    ReplyDelete
  32. I love Grumpy Old Hunters! I'd love anything to get Bobby back. I'd like to see a Men of Letters spin-off. That way occasionally the shows could crossover.

    ReplyDelete
  33. TV Topic: I like spin-offs if it has characters from the original show that have wrapped/tired out their story on that show, but could continue to be super interesting as main characters in their own show.

I can't think of any shows that don't have spin-offs already that I would want to have one right now.

Spin offs vary. Some are great and even sometimes better than the original (I like The Originals more than Vampire Diaries right now) and sometimes they end up being not so interesting (way more into Chicago Fire than Chicago PD - partly because I'm tired of ordinary cop shows).

The Supernatural spin-off the CW was considering was a wreck. It felt like a show better off on its own than based on Supernatural. It went with Carver's twisted mythology for the show, not the true mythology that Kripke and even Gamble kept together. And it felt like a rip off of The Originals in several ways. Add that the characters for the show were all going to be new and I'm glad it failed.

Common spin-off mistakes is making forced connections to the original show.

Tyler going after Klaus in The Originals was pointless. We knew Tyler wouldn't be able to do a dang thing to Klaus so not much revenge there. And it made Tyler look like an ass going after the baby. Same goes for Klaus randomly going to see Caroline on TVD for sex in the woods when everything's gone to hell in New Orleans.

On Chicago Fire/Chicago PD the stories are connected seamlessly.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'd only like a Supernatural spin-off if Kripke got his hands back into it.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I don't really mind what kind of spin-off Teen Wolf gets, but I was very excited for the kitsune spin-off since each type has a kind of super power that would have been really cool :) I'd also like MTV to change it's image, anytime I tell someone I watch Teen Wolf they first laugh at the name and then at the fact it's on MTV, both of which are pretty hard to defend :P

There a few spin-offs they could do with The 100. An Ark spin-off, the war leading to the nuclear apocalypse, a grounder spin-off or other survivors that aren't like grounders (such as whoever was at Mount Weather). I don't really mind if there are no characters from the main show in spin-offs.

Norma, Finch, Chandler and Veronica for me today..

  37. Pablo Troncoso25 July 2014 at 01:37

Barney Stinson and Emily Thorne for me today, although both are losing in the polls :(.
Barney still can pull a win, but it seems Emily is out >_<. Shame, she's such a wonderfull caharacter, but if she has to fall, falling against Chandler Bing is a good way to go... I think

    ReplyDelete
  38. Emily Thorne losing :(

    ReplyDelete
  39. Well I certainly won't follow anywhere Carver leads so I understand that sentiment. I wouldn't follow Edlund either, although he is a fan favorite. However, I would much ratehr Kripke take SPN back over than a spin-off. I can follow someone else to the spin-off while Kripke repairs the damage to the original series.

    ReplyDelete
  40. That works for me too. I just adored everything with Bobby and Rufus together and never got enough of them. I like it a wholelot better that the Samuel Colt spin-off people were talking about in season 6. That's probably because I ahte westerns and because Samuel Colt isn't near as interesting to me as Bobby is.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I agree. Damage control more important.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I wasn't as excited for a kitsune spin-off last year as i am this year. Kira drives me nuts with her hemmimg and hawing so I'd be happy for her family to move back to NY. Other than that my main point for a Teen Wolf spin-off would be so that characters that never get enough time would have a chance. Love teh Ark ideas.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Good for you. I am confident that Ichabod will do better next season so I'm not too worried about him. However, he made very clear how he feels about people who call him Ichy.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I agree that forcing conenctions between the original and the spin-off rarely work. It is much better if it seems organic. For instance, it made a lot of sense to me that Angel came back to see Buffy when her mom died. It was a touching remnder of how much they meant to each other and it didn't feel forced at all.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I wouldn't count Emily out yet, considering the polls have just started. It will be an uphill battle though.

    ReplyDelete
  46. start_wearing_purple25 July 2014 at 02:22

Kes was a lousy character from day 1 and frankly irredeemable. Personally I hated Tuvok because Tim Russ is such a lousy actor. Best character for me had to be Janeway.

  47. I am totally loving the Character Cup! Dahne, you are doing a fantastic job of fostering smart conversation about great topics every day. ReplyDelete
  48. Thanks so much for the kind words. I really appreciate it. I have been having a great time reading everyone's comments too and I am so glad that so many people are sharing their ideas and fostering such a great community to discuss TV. It's a joy to come to a website where people can offer differing opinions without attacking each other and really talk about TV in-depth. Thanks for participating!

  49. I agree completely and It has been my pleasure to participate. It's been a fun way to pass the evening at my house-sit that only has antenna TV...bor-ring! :-)

  50. Easy day as this is the last set of brackets where I have a couple favorites still in it....Beckett, Finch, Chandler and Veronica.

Today's topic: We talked about this a bit when the subject was first brought up as a potential topic so I'll be brief (well at least compared to the last couple days!) but for me spin-offs seem to either surpass the mother ship or outright suck.

The Originals would be a case where the spin-off surpassed the original show in my book. I really didn't like the books but I tired to give TVD a try. Two episodes in and I hated the female lead as much as I did in the books. I was leery about the Originals but when I looked at the cast and found out that NONE of the TVD original cast was coming with it, I decided to give it a try. To my great surprise, I loved it! Can't wait for S2 yet I still have zero desire to give TVD another try.

The SPN spin-off that the CW tried last season was a disaster. I think I got thru the first 10 minutes and I shut it off. In this case, they cherry picked the SPN mythology they wanted to use and slapped Supernatural in the name to get the existing fan base to tune in. In this case, having NONE of the characters from the original show and only capitalizing on superficial aspects of the mythology killed it for me. The SPN world has such a rich mythology with many characters that could easily have been given their own show, without having to tie in to Sam and Dean's current line, yet still be believable. I would've preferred a spin-off set in the old west telling the story of the Colt to what we got. Let's hope the second attempt goes better.

In my opinion, bringing over characters from the original series to the spin-off won't necessarily guarantee success if the new world is not firmly rooted in the mythology of the original. Star Trek is an excellent example of this - very few of the shows had carry over characters but the Star Trek world and it's core mythology remained constant - the new shows expanded the original world but the Federation was still the Federation and a Klingon was still a Klingon, even if they eventually learned how to play nice. Stargate is my favorite franchise ever and while I think they did a great job incorporating Atlantis into the mythology of the original series, Universe felt like BSG with a Stargate on board. I kept expecting cylons to come thru the Gate and couldn't watch more than a couple episodes despite being a fan of the franchise and several of the actors in Universe.

    So much for brief....

I'm glad Sleepy Hollow got a season 2 so hopefully more people will get on the bandwagon! Of course it's going to hell so maybe not the most pleasant ride but an awesome show nonetheless. I also like that Ichabod and Abby are equal leads and that she is a strong character.

The biggest problem with DS9 is the first 2 seasons are the worst 2 seasons of any Star Trek series, but the last 2 are the best. Season 6 has "In the Pale Moonlight" which I still argue is the best Star Trek episode ever. If you ever want to try DS9 again, I'd suggest watching only a few episodes in season 1 and 2.

  57. UPDATE - If you haven't had a chance to vote for the poll pictures, please look at your choices. The most votes will go in tomorrow's round and then we'll work our way through the other pictures as characters move forward. Thanks so much to everyone who submitted pictures!

Edited to add - Not sure why the first Jane picture is on the right. It isn't showing up that way on my blog or in the poll site.

  58. Always great when you're happy if either win. Yesterday I was sad when Ichabod was out, but still happy that Olivia is still representing Fringe in round 3.

    ReplyDelete
  59. She just needs a few key Revenge sites to post about the contest. It's amazing how quickly that can turn things around.

    ReplyDelete
  60. 1. She was from a show that has been cancelled for over 7 years that was ratings-challeged at best on a small network that a good portion of the United States didn't even get.

    2. She is going against one of the more popular shows on SpoilerTV.

I voted for Veronica Mars and I happen to think that she is one of the best teen characters ever created, but that doesn't change that there are a lot of people who have never heard of her much less watched the show.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Voted for Kate Beckett, Emily Thorne,& Barney Stinson, Tv topic favorite spinoff, Chicago Pd, from Chicago fire, I love both those shows. Congrats for yesterday's winners three out of four of my favorite characters moving on!!!

    ReplyDelete
  62. That is one of the things I always add when talkingto people about trying Sleepy Hollow. Their partnership is perfect because they are equals and they both bring different strengths to the partnership. If they ruin it by pandering to shippers I am going to be so mad. They make a great team as they are.

    ReplyDelete
  63. You are doing much better in the polls than I am. There are only 4 characters I care about in the round 3 so far and 2 of them are going against each other. :-(

    ReplyDelete
  64. Yikes! That's like still having dial-up modem internet service. So sorry.

    ReplyDelete
  65. That has got to suck, but I know I'm gonna be torn if my favorites have to go head to head, you sure predicted right about Vincent and Olivia, how are you with predicting stocks:)

    ReplyDelete
  66. The books for both The Vampire Diaries and The Secret Circle came out when I was inhigh school and I became a LJ Smith junkie almost immediately, so I tried both shows out 2 decades later. I found my tastes had changed but if she if getting any royalties from TVD and TO then i'm glad they are doing so well.

I was surprised when I heard that the SPN spin-off wasn't going to have anything to do with SPN, just for that fact. There are so many ways you could go with it and so, so many characters to play with. My original spin-off idea was to take some of those kids Dean and Sam saved and have them become hunters that find each other and make a group out of it. Then later they did kind of the same thing with Krissy and it kind of soured my thinking on it. I would not want the Colt prequel, but that's jsut because I hate westerns. Other than that, angel wars, a series about Garth, or the further adventures of the Ghostfacers, I would be up for about anything.

I agree that spin-offs need to be rooted in the basic laws of the original series but I am okay if they start creating their own canon as well. They can stretch the foundation already laid by the original but they can't break it. I like your Star Trek analogy. It makes a lot of sense.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Considering how badly my prediction brackets are going, you'd be much, much better off asking people who are doing well. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  68. start_wearing_purple25 July 2014 at 05:08

Actually compared to other Star Trek actors, Ethan Phillips was better than most. That said, since his character was mostly tied to Tuvok and Kes and frankly I felt the character Neelix was dragged down by association. On the other hand, his final major episode "Homestead" was not only one of his best but showed the true evolution of his character from coward to leader.

    ReplyDelete
  69. People don't know what they're missing out on if they've never heard/watched Veronica Mars.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I agree but it's been off air for a long time, so it's hard sometimes for it to come to people's notice.

    ReplyDelete
  71. True but the movie came out early this year so that would've caught at least some people's attention and encouraged them to watch the show.

  72. Cate. We put Barney up against Finch? Argh! Emily, Regina. I picked Finch. They made Barney awesome then wiped it out in

I can't remember what I picked in the picture poll. Not two seconds after I clicked 'Vote' :-)

    ReplyDelete
  73. Harold, Emily and Regina by default.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Ha! I just picked whatever picture I could see their face best in. Barney vs. Finch is hard.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I actually think that is the only reason Veronica made it into the contest at all. Cancelled shows had a harder time in the nomination process than normal. Only 9 out of the 64 characters came from cancelled shows.

Ok, Grumpy Old Hunters or even a Cas spinoff makes sense. You're making a tie to the created universe but not re-inventing the show.

  77. Voted Barney and Regina. Looks like it's going to be another nail-biter with Barney and Finch!!

Spin-offs. I don't have one hard and fast perspective on this. But I guess based on my experience with them, I'd say spin-offs work when they're done for the right reason. Like CSI Miami and New York are just location changes. I never liked them. The characters bugged me, and Miami was filmed in this super annoying way! It's to bright and don't even get me started on the sunglasses! Looked like CBS was just trying to duplicate the success. I'm not sure on CSI Cyber is going to be. I haven't seen the CSI episode where they introduce some of the people. I would think that changing the focal point of the show slightly, (ie cyber crime) instead of the city, is a step in the right direction. We'll see how it pans out through.

Chicago PD is a spin-off success story for me. Though I'm also biased because I only started watching Chicago Fire so that I could watch PD because of Sophia Bush... But I'm glad I did! It's a complete genre change which works for me. And the crossovers work well. I really enjoyed the two part they had this season, with the Fire team being the first responders at the disaster scene, and then the PD team catching the bad guys. I also liked all the medical people they introduced. If they ever made a Chicago MD, I would watch it. Similarly, I think Flash is going to be fun. It's a connected world, but with enough in each show to hold their own.

As for Private Practice, I never liked Addison enough to follow it, and I wasn't too hot on the rest of the cast either. I never tried in OUAT in Wonderland because the movie creeped the hell out of me when I was younger. I might consider watching a Frozen spinoff, but I don't think such a show is a good idea.

Long story short: Spin-offs are hard, but when they're done well, they're brilliant.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Yeah a Diggle spin-off would be pretty cool. I wouldn't mind something with the Suicide Squad either. That was a fun DIggle episode! Not as much as the prison one earlier on in the season, but pretty cool. You should watch it when you get the chance

    ReplyDelete
  79. Yes!!! I find Friends completely overrated too!!! Can't stand it!

    ReplyDelete
  80. I'm not that into Supernatural, but from you describe it does sound like a recipe for disaster!! If you just take the mythology it's just any vampire/demon show. Based on my Supernatural knowledge, using Castiel in some way might work right?

    ReplyDelete
  81. Beckett
    Barney
    Chandler
    Regina

The first two polls were so tough, because I also love Norma Bates and all her craziness, and Michael Emerson is so great. Chandler was the easiest pick, my all time favorite!

    ReplyDelete
  82. Harold Finch (ex Ben Linus) and Regina Mills for me today.

    ReplyDelete
  83. My judgement regarding whether a spin-off is worth watching is generally based on the pilot's merits. If I like the original show (or character) I may root for the new show to be a success but it has to be a good show in its own right.

I don't think every character on every show should spawn a spin off. If a show has too many characters...more than likely dead weight needs to be cut. Just because a character is interesting while part of an ensemble doesn't automatically make interesting enough to carry a show. They've set up enough with ARGUS and Diggle's connection to that group to make a viable show, but there's not enough there for Thea or Roy to be enough to carry a show. Argent is the only character that I think has any potential for a spin off. His ties to the core of Teen Wolf have been severed enough that if he went off on his own to save the world from monsters....it could stand. But the other kids. Derek? Nope. Sorry. Don't see it.

I smiled to mention of The Bionic Woman on you list. I loved that show.

  88. Spinoffs That I Loved:

    1. Star Trek: Deep Space 9- Is my favorite Trek series.

    2. Good Times- Which was a spinoff of Maude (i didn't like), which itself was a spinoff of All In The Family. Which brings me to:

    3. The Jeffersons- What a funny show this was.

    4. Archie Bunker's Place- Not as good as the original. But did have the touching episode, where Edith died.

    5. Angel- Great series, that ended far too soon.

Spinoffs That I Want To See:

    1. Lost- I want to see the others. It could start after Richard, started working for Jacob.

    2. Firefly- There is too much, left in this universe left to explore.

    3. Suicide Squad- Diggle really shined, in this episode of Arrow.

    4. The Methos Chronicles- This really should of been, the spinoff to Highlander, not The Raven.

    5. Star Trek- I want the Romulan War, the Klingon War. Or maybe that old rumored spinoff, set in the 27th-28th centuries. Where the Federation is in decline. And they need a Kirk type of Captain.

    ReplyDelete
  89. 1. N/A
    2. Finch - a great character played by a great actor, and I didn't watch HIMYM.
    3. Emily - an awesome anti-heroine who comes up with so many devious plays, she makes Revenge compelling. I find Friends overrated. It's depressing that Emily is losing by such a wide margin. :(
    4. Veronica - I like both, but Regina and OUaT are overrated, and Veronica is one of the best teenagers to have ever existed on TV. With stunning intelligence, street smarts, razor-sharp wit and a gritty determination to right wrongs, yet also believable flaws like her stubbornness, recklessness and "eye for an eye" mentality, she was quite the captivating lead.

    ReplyDelete
  90. My only vote here is for Regina...
On the topic of spinoffs, I am going somewhere unpopular: The Sarah Jane Adventures succeeded as a Doctor Who spinoff where Torchwood failed. While both shows were built around popular characters from the parent series, only Sarah Jane succeeded in what it set out to do. Torchwood always fell short, in part because the Doctor Who universe already had a secret organisation devoted to "tracking down aliens and arming the human race against the future" (and with a "more adult" approach) - if it had been a UNIT spinoff, I believe it would have worked. Sarah Jane, meanwhile, basically continued the story of a friend of The Doctor, doing what she had always done.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Norma and Chandler. Too bad Walter White is out. Speaking of Breaking Bad, and on the topic of spin-offs, I'm a little worried about Better Call Saul. Creating a pre-BB Saul sounds like an ambitious task and I don't know if it can be pulled off. I would have preferred having Bob play a "Saul-like" lawyer in a different, but similar show.

Deep Space Nine was probably the best Star Trek series as far as writing is concerned. My favourite was Voyager, though. Mostly for the sake of Janeway and everything she represented being the first female lead in ST franchise. I just wish the overall quality of VOY was anywhere near that of DS9. What was your favourite character on DS9, by the way? (Mine was Odo :-) )

    ReplyDelete
  93. I loved Odo and Dax (both) as well. I pretty much liked all the cast. But i'd have to go with Sisco, minus that mystical story at the end. I did really like Voyager, enough though the series had it's issues. That season finale, where Janeway went to the Borg, to make an alliance against Species 8472, is in my top 10 Trek episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Beckett, Barney, Chandler and Veronica (sorry Regina!). I can't believe Sheldon and Walter are out.

    ReplyDelete
  95. There's always next year.

    ReplyDelete
  96. I like Friends, but I don't think it is the best comedy ever.

    ReplyDelete
  97. I didn't realize a Breaking Bad prequel was in the mix. That kind of surprises me given the critical acclaim of BB and they type of show it is.

    ReplyDelete
  98. I saw some of Torchwood but it never grabbed me. Never saw the Sarah Jane Adventures.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Totally agree on Veronica Mars. Sometimes her recklessness had me itching to put a leash on her, but she is still one of the best TV teenagers ever written.

    ReplyDelete
  100. My brother and I used to watch Good Times reruns in the summer. It's amazing how many shows were spun off the same shows. I would love to watch Suicide Squad because Diggle desperately needs something to do and I agree about the Methos Chronicles, although I liked Raven too. Definitely could see a 24 spin-off with Kate.

    ReplyDelete
  101. I've heard great things about that episode. I may check it out before the new seasons starts.

    ReplyDelete
  102. I think Derek could work on a spin-off in the same vein as Angel did. In fact, that's pretty much what I'd like to see Teen Wolf do.

    ReplyDelete
  103. I thought Gibbs was a douche the first times I saw NCIS too. I wasn't until I saw him with Abby in the elevator when she was terrified of a stalker that I saw another side of him and started to like NCIS. I tried to love JAG and I really liked the first female character in the pilot, but the lead female after that drove me nuts.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Yeah i liked the blonde too. The episodes written after 9/11, were pretty good. That's when i really got into JAG. It's not my type of show anymore, but i loved it when it was on.

    Emily won't make it :///

    ReplyDelete
  106. I think they had 8 or 9 series, all set in the All In The Family universe. Most were very good. Amanda was a great guest star, but not a strong enough character, to be a lead. At least not with the plot they came up with. That's why it failed.

I remember reading an interview with Kiefer Sutherland. He said that he wasn't up to doing anymore 24 as a lead. But that they may continue with other characters. I believe Live Another Day, was FOX's way of setting up the spinoff with Kate. I'm sure, they will eventually have Jack as a storyline, so they can rescue him, and close out his character.

With as many DC projects current underway, we may have to wait a while if ever for Suicide Squad. Though Diggle, definitely needs more to do.

    ReplyDelete
  107. I am looking forward to trying Bates Motel since so many people have praised this character.

    ReplyDelete
  108. I didn't have a problem with the CSI:NY, but I never watched the first one so it was like its own show for me. I really hated Miami but that was an acting thing. I am very much looking forward to Flash though, basically because I thought the 2 episodes in Arrow were fun.

    ReplyDelete
  109. One of the first TV series I became addicted to (after Highlander) was Stargate SG-1 and I think they did very well with spin offs. I'm also a big fan of Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe even though it, unfortunately, never found its public. The story of Stargate lends itself really well to spin offs: it's about a giant ring which can transport you anywhere in the universe. From this story you can imagine literally thousands of plots to make episodes, it makes sense you could build an entirely different TV series. The transition episodes were also particularly well done, when the new characters were introduced I always found it seamless and many characters from the main series crossed over to the other shows without problem.
I think sci-fi is probably the genre that lends itself the most easily to spin offs, others don't do so good. We know how the story ended for Wonderland, when you've already put so many different characters from so many different stories into one show, how can you justify building a show on a single narrative? It seems a little restrictive.
I'm also wary of the temptation networks have to make more money by repeating the exact same formula. The different versions of CSI and the short-lived spin off of Criminal Minds were always redundant.

    ReplyDelete
  110. My problem with Torchwood was mostly the bad writing, the first episodes were on TV the other day and I cringed when I heard the dialogues. It was painful. It had potential though and I can see the appeal of building a show around John Barrowman.

    ReplyDelete
  111. I would absolutely watch The Methos Chronicles and it's still doable, Peter Wingfield hasn't changed much since Highlander, same for Adrian Paul.

    ReplyDelete
  112. I always thought CSI Miami was the orange version of CSI and CSI New York the blue version. There was actually an episode where Gary Sinise and David Caruso worked a case together, they were in the same room but when Sinise was filmed the light was blue and when Caruso was filmed it was orange. I couldn't believe my eyes.
I like Chicago PD fine but I'm not sure it was necessary, we already have so many cop shows.

    ReplyDelete
  113. I always thought Universe was a great idea but the execution was too dark. The writers tried to do something different and they missed. It's really a shame because the cast was stellar.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Agreed. I really tried to like it. I loved the cast and I loved the franchise it just felt more BSG than SG. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing but in doing so I felt that they lost the essence of SG. With all the reboots going on, I really wish they would make another series, not more movies.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Never read the The Secret Circle book but I remember when it got cancelled the internet exploded! I wish they would make a series out of the House of Night series by PC Cast and her daughter. It's a different take on the vampire genre that I enjoyed much more than TVD. The books are YA but easy reads so if you have an afternoon to kill on a book - I recommend them :-)

Up until the Krissy episode, I thought that kind of a spin-off would be great too. I agree that episode kinda ruined that idea for me. I'm not a fan of westerns either but I would be more likely to watch that than what they had originally intended! I wish they would give Cas his own show - the angel story line is bigger than what Supernatural can give it without it detracting from the J2 story line. S9 is case and point. The angel story line could've been so much better if it had it's own legs and likewise, Supernatural S9 would have been better if they had more screen time on the MoC, MoL and Crowley vs. Abaddon.

Star Trek is my shining example of how it should be done. Were the Klingons the same from the original Start Trek as the ones in later series? No. but how they got there started with the mythology established in the original series - I firmly believe that is why Start Trek has survived in popular culture for so long!

    ReplyDelete
  116. Huh, I know I replied to you but my comment seems to be lost in space...so if my original reply comes up, just ignore this one :-)

Yes, having Castiel in his own show would be much preferred at this point. The angel story line has become bigger than what Supernatual can devote to it...I think the original show would benefit from fewer story lines and a new show that was devoted to the angel story line would keep a fan favorite character around, with plenty of cross over opportunities, while also expanding the angel mythology.

  117. Ha! That's funny that the filter followed them. That must have been jarring.

    ReplyDelete
  118. it's easy for me today: Beckett, Finch, Chandler and Regina<3

    ReplyDelete
  119. Well as usual all my favorite characters, except Tyrion and Jane, are out since the beginning. But I'm really not surprised and I don't complain about it. :)
On the contrary I was sure that Walter and Sheldon would be in the final poll, based on the popularity and celebrity of BB and TBBT.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Thanks you for not complaining. It does make it nicer for everyone. :-) My favorites except for one are out as well, so I'm in the same boat. Walter and Sheldon could never have gone against each other in the finals though. The are on the side side of the bracket, so the closest they could get would be the semi-finals. Quite frankly I am surprised that Sheldon did as well as he did. He came in 19th place, which is great for a show that gets very little love on SpoilerTV. Walter comes from a basic cable show, no matter the acclaim, which is automatically going to have fewer people who have seen it.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Oh you must, its very entertaining and the cast is brilliant!

    ReplyDelete
  122. The DVDs were on sale so I bought season 1. Probably won't get to it until December though.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Yeah the acting on Miami was terrible. NY was a little better. I'm surprised Miami lasted as long it did though.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Don't worry, didn't get the first one.

Yeah Castiel seems like a good spin off if they ever go down that road again.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Tough title to attain when there are so many great ones out there.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Yeah, potential; I watched the first season, waiting and hoping it would live up to what it could be, then gave it up as a lost cause... and got all kinds of grief from other fans for "not supporting" a Doctor Who spinoff and/or the gay agenda.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Interestingly enough, Sarah Jane's successful spinoff built upon a previous failed spinoff involving her from thirty years earlier... Torchwood meanwhile seemed to ride on "hey, look, a Doctor Who spinoff!!!"

    ReplyDelete
  128. I know, it's weird. It's set to premiere in November. I'll give it a try.

    ReplyDelete
  129. I'm sorry that happened to you. Few things in everyday life get as vicious as when your own fandom turns on you.

    ReplyDelete
  130. I am not a Caruso fan so it had a major stirke against it from the beginning for me.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Sadly, Doctor Who fandom is essentially negative/hostile... I enjoy the show more now that I stopped associating with fans. I have given up trying to understand why so many lifeling diehard admirers of something instinctively attack it and each other with such vehemence and spite.

    ReplyDelete
  132. I've been talking about When Fandoms Attack on my blog. It's amazing how quickly what should be a great, fun thing can turn into an exercise in bullying. Sometimes I think people are jsut waiting for an excuse to attack people with a vehemence that borders on sociopathic.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Obviously you're right! I do understand for Sheldon. I don't even watched TBBT. Well about Walter I'm still a little confused. Although Breaking Bad was a cable show I thought it had a lot of fans here in SpoilerTV.
I just hope there will be more love for Stiles (and also for Teen Wolf) here next year. :)

    ReplyDelete
  134. Walter does have a lot of fans here on STV, but so does Damon and TVD has a bigger online fandom in general.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Way back when the original DW series was freshly cancelled, I regularly bought videos from The ABC Shop in town (note: this is an Aussie cultural institution). One day, as I was trying to decide between The Five Doctors and another recent release, I was cornered by two little old ladies who declared William Hartnell to be the One True Doctor and all other actors to be unworthy of the part. Little old ladies tried to bully me into not buying what I wanted, and nearly blocked me from leaving the store. I'd been able to evade mugging attempts in the street outside far easier than deal with fans like these. Never mind the later incident with a loaded firearm - I repeat: little old ladies!!! I've observed something similar in role-playing game groups, and I think it is worth asking how many of these people were bullied in school (I was) and deal with their experiences by using gaming/fandom as an arena to bully others. Anyway... thanks for reading.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Wow! Little old lady fans sound harder to shake than a lot of online fans. that reminds of the old woman who cursed out my mother when she politely asked her to stop talking during the movie. The psychology of online bullies fascinates me because while some are your typical bullies everywhere, a good portion do appear to be people who would never attack like that in person and seem to be lashing out repressed emotions, whether from being bullied themselves or frustration over life.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Most of my problem encounters with fans have been in person... online, it is easier to block, sign out, defriend, or simple avoid a website - and besides, online fans are much less likely to know where I live. I don't even wear my Doctor Who t-shirt any more - in public I get ridiculed, threatened and harassed by sports fans (for being a trekkie), and at science fiction conventions I got similar treatment (for not being a trekkie). While my Shaun Of The Dead t-shirts don't attract any comment, I've found it safer not to even mention Heroes at all. As for Torchwood... the typical interaction was: another fan would whine and complain about how bad it was, I'd tell them "if you don't like it, don't watch" (which is what I ended up doing) - and then I'd get yelled at, either along the lines of "you're not a true fan" or "but look at what it has done for gay people" (I fail to see how inherent structural production problems have anything to do with the sexuality of anyone on or watching a show). And for the mugging attempt by a "normal" bully? The guy towered over me and demanded money, I looked him in the eye and said "I can't help you" and kept on walking. If only fans were as easily dealt with.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Yesh, it's bad when you can't even wear a t-shirt anymore. I have to say that I did laugh at the Heroes comment though. How anyone can confuse Doctor Who with Star Trek baffles me though. I found that I have the opposite problem though. Anytime I mention story structure problems or even jsut logic flaws, others accuse me of not being "a true fan." Apparently true fan means loving eveything even if it doesn't make sense.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Star Trek is kind of generic-brand SF, insofaras if you're into SF in any way "normal" people immediately think Trekkie (e.g. the live sports host's tirade against "Trekkies" when some Babylon 5 fans complained about a program scheduled to air at 11pm rarely starting before 1am). I grew up on British SF television - Doctor Who, Red Dwarf, Blake's 7, Hitchhiker's Guide, etc - and for five years in a row the only SF merchandise I got as birthday presents from family members was Star Trek. Last thoughts: fan is short for fanatic, and isn't it "funny" how some kinds of fanaticism (sports) are more socially acceptable than others? While I still follow the English Premier League football team of my father and grandfather, I see that as part of my cultural heritage, not something to get religious/patriotic about.

    ReplyDelete
  140. I don't think it is bad here in the US. I see plenty of people walking around with TV shirts of all kinds and a lot of times people who do notice nod or smile at them. Sports are definitely still the nation's biggest pasttime and obsession but no one looks sideways at a TV fan, unless their shirt is something along the lines of Cthulhu, Walking Dead zombies being axed, or something else that could give small children nightmares.
