Scene Of The Week - May 4, 2014 - POLL

4 May 2014

A weekly feature in which we're trying to find most compelling, best acted, written, directed and just generally great scenes that we've seen recently.

BATES MOTEL, "The Box", April 28, 2014, Actors: Freddie Highmore, Max Thieriot and more
The Scenes: Norman goes crazy alone in the box & Norman kills Ms. Watson & Dylan kills Nick Ford

Laurent Derré: Flashback of Norman killing Ms. Watson. I really thought Norman did not kill her... Norman Bates is definitely born! Also picked by DarkUFO
Sharon Seymour: Norman going batshit crazy alone in the box.
Darth Locke: Dylan kills Nick Ford.

FARGO, "A Muddy Road", April 29, 2014, Actors: Kate Walsh, Martin Freeman, Billy Bob Thornton and more, The Scenes: Gina tries to seduce Lester & The opening scene
Sharon Seymour:
Gina (Kate Walsh) tries to seduce Lester whilst in the background one of her sons shoots the other son in the ass with a crossbow. Hilarious scene.
Laurent Derré: The opening scene: slow, hilarious and violent. The show is perfect and Billy Bob Thornton is SO good in his role! Also picked by DarkUFO

GAME OF THRONES, "Oathkeeper", April 27, 2014, Actors: Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Gwendoline Christie and more, The Scenes: Jamie says goodbye to Brienne & Craster's last son gets frozen by the Night's King
Darth Locke:
Jaime gives Brienne his new Valyrian steel sword before she departs to find Sansa.
Sandi wich: Craster's last son gets frozen by the Night's King. What an eerie scene, in such a beautiful setting, extraordinary! The show does more than the books to remind us that the White Walkers are a huge threat in some ways, and this is one of those times. Hopefully this scene has put to bed the idea that Dany's dragons can just swoop down and sort them out easily; I'm not sure why some think her three beasts would be able to do that when all the thousands that came before them were unable to do so. The only thing about it that I didn't like was not seeing enough detail of all the White Walkers in the distance who were gathered for the ceremony, but I guess that was on purpose to leave us wanting more.

GREY'S ANATOMY, "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together", May 1, 2014, Actors: Sandra Oh, Isaiah Washington, The Scene: Burke offers Cristina his hospital in Zurich
Tonya Papanikolas:
This was a wonderful scene. Cristina goes in not knowing why Burke has offered her a job and skeptical of his intentions. She tells him that when he left her on their wedding day, it was the best thing for her because it made her stand on her own two feet. Burke then tells her he doesn't want her working with him. He loved her so much, it consumed him and he can't have that again because he has a family now. Instead, he wants her to take over his hospital. Cristina is floored. And you know right then and there, she is going to take the job and this is how her character will leave. Grey's did a wonderful job of building up a scene with so much backstory and confused emotions that it created tension and intrigue. It was an extremely impactful way to write out a character that everyone already knew was leaving.

MARVEL'S AGENTS OF SHIELD, "Nothing Personal", April 29, 2014, Actors: Chloe Bennet, Brett Dalton and more, The Scenes: Coulson comes Skye to the rescue & Skye is forced to choose whether to let Ward die
Justyna Kubica: First of all, I can't even tell you how hard it was to pick just one scene from this week's episode. There were so many I really enjoyed. All the confrontations and discovering the truth, not to mention many references to one of my favorite Avengers. Such a brilliant episode, again. But in the end, I figured I'm gonna go with less emotional scene this time and picked Coulson coming Skye to the rescue. I always enjoy moments with these two, especially since their family-like bond ended up being one of my favorites on the show. But the entire escape from the plane and flying Lola was a truly awesome and unexpected part. “I told you to buckle up!” Now that's what I call a rescue mission. Very impressive work by Coulson. Hard not to love this guy. Can't wait to see what's next.
Virginia Fontana: Skye is forced to choose between giving Hydra valuable information or letting Ward die. An amazingly suspenseful moment on so many levels...Skye had to decide if she was capable of killing the man who had betrayed the team so horribly, and at the same time, she obviously can't just shut off everything she ever felt for him, and that's a factor in her choice, too. Another excellent episode this week that was full of scenes worthy of inclusion here.

MELISSA AND JOEY, "Accidents Will Happen", April 30, 2014, Actors: Taylor Spreitler, Sterling Knight, The Scene: Zander offers to help Lennox when he think she's pregnant
Klutzy girl:
Zander thinks Lennox is pregnant - and with another man's baby at that - and tells her he'd still help her. That was so sweet (and unexpected, coming from a teenage boy) and I'm glad that was the catalyst to them getting back together. Really hope Sterling Knight becomes a regular next season.

NASHVILLE, "Your Good Girl's Gonna Go Bad", April 30, 2014, Actors: Clare Bowen, Connie Britton
The Scene: Scarlett tries to escape from psychiatric hospital
Laurent Derré:
Scarlett tries to escape from psychiatric hospital while Rayna tries to reassure her... Heartbreaking!

NCIS, "Shooter", April 29, 2014, Actors: Pauley Perrette and more, The Scene: Abby reunites the homeless girl with her parents
Daniel van der Veer:
Once again, Abby was shown to be the heart and soul of the NCIS family. In an emotional episode that touched on a difficult subject, Abby couldn't accept the pain the homeless girl was in. She found out who she was and that she ran away from her parents. While she was initially reluctant to call her parents, Abby convinced her to do so, and in the end she did.

NCIS LOS ANGELES, "One More Chance", April 29, 2014, Actors: Daniela Ruah, Eric Christian Olsen
The Scene: Kensi and Deeks talk about kids
Tonya Papanikolas:
Kensi and Deeks talk about kids and how they complement one another. I loved this scene between the two partners because it was a subtle way for them to talk about something intimate in the context of what was going on with a case. The banter then turned really fun and teasing as they made jokes about the other complementing themselves in a funny way. It was a great scene with both serious and lighthearted undertones that showed their wonderful interaction.

ONCE UPON A TIME, "A Curious Thing", April 27, 2014, Actors: Lana Parrilla and more
The Scene: Regina breaks the curse
Klutzy girl:
I love that mother's love saved the day again. Also picked by Samy Bgs

PERSON OF INTEREST, "Beta", April 29, 2014, Actors: Michael Emerson, Carrie Preston and more
The Scenes: Finch trades places with Grace & Finch and Reese talk about the exchange

Justyna Kubica: The entire exchange on the bridge had to be one of the most heartbreaking moments for Finch, and on the show. To risk your life for somebody you love and not being able to even reveal you're next to them is a terribly sad situation. I'm glad the team was there for Finch and even though they wanted to find another way, they chose to respect his decision and did their best to protect Grace. Michael Emerson's performance is, as always, especially in these very emotional scenes, absolutely amazing. It's hard not to feel incredibly sorry for Finch watching him walk across that bridge. Poor guy! The stakes are so high right now. It looks like the ending for this season is gonna be just as (if not more) spectacular than for the last one. Can't wait! Kudos to the Person Of Interest team!
Bradley Adams: The Finch for Grace trade. That was agonising seeing Finch that close to her - even stopping her from falling over - and yet he still wouldn't tell her he is alive. Poor Finch.
Sharon Seymour: Finch's "Kill them All" line at the end of the episode. Also picked by DarkUFO

REIGN, "Higher Ground", May 1, 2014, Actors: Megan Follows and more, The Scene: Catherine's confession to her priest
Sandi wich:
I absolutely love Megan Follows in these types of scenes, she's simply wonderful at conveying Catherine's haughty demeanour and sense of self-importance. She doesn't get enough chances to show her comedic side on the show, especially now that things are coming to a head and there's so much conflict between all the characters, so this unexpected short scene before she's kidnapped was a treat.

REVENGE, "Revolution", April 27, 2014, Actors: Olivier Martinez, Henry Czerny and more
The Scene: Pascal's death
Samy Bgs:
Pascal's death, it was unpredictable!

REVOLUTION, "$#!& Happens", April 30, 2014, Actors: Tracy Spiridakos, Giancarlo Esposito
The Scene: Charlie confesses to Neville that she killed Jason
Virginia Fontana:
Stunning performances from Tracy Spiridakos and Giancarlo Esposito in a harrowing scene full of desperation and painful honesty. Also picked by Darth Locke

SIRENS, "Shotgun Wedding", May 1, 2014, Actors: Michael Mosley, Kevin Daniels and more
The Scene: Everyone hears Hank's phone call with Johnny
Bradley Adams:
Hank's phone call with Johnny is overheard by everyone, after he had told Hank to have a "poker face".

THE 100, "Contents Under Pressure", April 30, 2014, Actors: Marie Avgeropoulos and more
The Scene: Octavia cuts herself with the poison knife
Daniel van der Veer:
All the brutal torture from Bellamy, Clarke and Raven did not get the Grounder to talk. Instead, Octavia leans on the Grounder's affection towards her by infecting herself with the same poison Finn was injected with. It showed us that Octavia is not only smarter than the rest, but also that sometimes it doesn't take extreme physical torture to break somone, but use psychological torture instead.

THE MENTALIST, "Brown Eyed Girls", April 27, 2014, Actors: Simon Baker, Robin Tunney, The Scene: Lisbon tells Jane about her offer to go to D.C.
Tonya Papanikolas:
Lisbon thinks Jane knows everything and therefore must already know about her offer and not have any feelings about her leaving because he hasn't said anything. But she finally tells him herself. Jane doesn't have much of a response. He seems flummoxed and tells her if she is happy, then he is happy. But he didn't seem happy. He now has to decide for himself if he wants to stop her from going. He has to decide how he feels and what he wants. The build-up is coming!

THE ORIGINALS, "A Closer Walk with Thee", April 29, 2014, Actors: Daniel Gillies, Phoebe Tonkin
The Scene: Elijah and Hayley kiss
Virginia Fontana:
I loved the timing of Elijah telling Hayley that fearing she might die was the most frightened he had ever been, and then Hayley pausing before rushing to his arms. Finally, the sparks between them were too much to resist. A beautifully played and romantic scene.

THE TOMORROW PEOPLE, "Kill Switch", April 28, 2014, Actors: Mark Pellegrino and more
The Scene: The final scene

Justyna Kubica: The entire final sequence, with Roger being back in the Machine, Marla and Luca leaving, Astrid joining Cara, John and Stephen and everyone else was quite an emotional moment. But nothing can really beat the final shot of the episode where Jedikiah discovers he finally has the powers he always wanted. That's a real game changer and it's something I rarely say about my shows. From the beginning Jedikiah has been a truly fascinating character, certainly not a good guy, but somehow also not entirely a bad guy. It's hard to guess on whose side he actually is, mostly his own, but whenever he's trying to help his brother and other Tomorrow People, when he shows he truly cares, about John or Stephen, he can be a real scene stealer. I am so excited to see how his story's gonna change in the last episode of the season (hopefully not the show). Mark Pellegrino is such a great actor and I love seeing him getting new interesting storylines with a lot of potential like this one. And maybe now we're gonna get more scenes with Jedikiah and John who, in my opinion, have one of the best dynamics on the show. Great work everyone, can't wait for what's next.
Daniel van der Veer: Besides getting his brother back and getting rid of The Founder, there is something else Jedikiah has been wanting for the entire series: powers. After Irene identified the gene that Tomorrow People have and humans don't which Jedikiah has been looking for for years, he transplants her powers to his own body and finally gets what he wants.. It will be interesting to see whether he uses the power for the good or for the bad, possibly both. Also picked by Bradley Adams

WAREHOUSE 13, "A Faire to Remember", April 28, 2014, Actors: Saul Rubinek, Joanne Kelly, Allison Scagliotti, The Scene: Artie tells Claudia and Myka that they're a family
Klutzy girl:
Artie tells Claudia and Myka that they're a family and from now on, no one does anything alone. The hug was sweet, and it was just an adorable moment. So going to miss this show.

  1. So many good scenes this week, but I went just with Revolution, bc let´s face it, that scene was one of the best so far. Stunnung performances on both sides.

    And more...

  4. Cheers Justyna!

Game of Thrones had a couple of other scenes I would loved to have nominated if the Night King's scene hadn't been included, it would have been a toss up between Jamie and Tyrion's talk in the dungeon & Jamie and Brienne bid each other farewell, complete with a grinning Podrick :D

Just about to catch up on a couple of other shows from this week, GoT & Reign are the only two I have seen so far so unfortunately they were my only nominations, sorry.

  5. OUaT -TLK, this was a long time coming, at least for me and I'm extremely happy that it was confirmed that Regina and Henry love each other :) Honorable mention for this episode goes to the Regina/Henry/Robin scene:)

GoT - Jaime and Brienne. I'll miss their interaction but it was great to see how they come to care for and understand each other. Second one - the "birth" of White Walker.

Melissa and Joey - Zander/Lennox scene, so sweet :)

    Cheers!
Jamie and Tyrion's talk in the dungeon - I forgot about this one. And it's a really good scene. So that's another one to my honorable mentions.

Yeah, I actually managed to see more of my shows, but still...considering how little time I currently have I think the list of my summer marathons grows bigger every week.

  7. I loved the crack about the Kingslayer brothers, lol. The scene with Bronn that lead to Jamie finally going to visit Tyrion was also great.

  8. regina x henry breaking the curse for sure.

POI was the highlight of this past week for me: the great emotional moments with Grace and Finch, but also those little treasures like Shaw paying for the ice-cream or Fusco tricking the “agent” to go straight into Reese’s hands.

OUAT – I liked that they went for the unexpected with Regina, rather than Emma, being the one to break the curse.

The Mentalist. It's the best show on TV.

The scene in Elementary where Sherlock breaks out the tools and is perfectly willing to torture a man to get Watson back. He was both unhinged and deadly calm at the same time, and the line he says about caring for her with all the depth he can muster, and about her remarkableness, was so convincing. And when he tells Mycroft that if anything happens to Joan, he'd murder him. Not kill. Murder. The acting and writing on that show is first rate. So much nuance and the vibe is so immersive. I'm not even sure I loved the episode, but I've been thinking about it for three days.

  12. OUAT - Snow kills Charming

The 100 - That moment between Octavia and the grounder when he says 'thank you' to her

  13. The tomorrow people had tons of great scenes. The ending montage, the scenes with Irene and Jed, Marla and roger, and luke and astrid.
Grimm: loved the scenes with Trouble learning that everything she saw was real. Especially the part in the trailer.
Big Bang theory: penny's reaction to Leonard trying to explain May the fourth to her and Sheldon's interactions with the ghost of Arthur Jeffries and then hugging Leonard afterwards.
The mentalist: I liked the jane Lisbon scene in the beginning where he convinced her to enter the house and they found the injured woman. Lisbon's frustration with Jane was palpable.
Revenge: Pascals death....didn't see that coming. I felt terrible for Victoria...I really wish Emily would leave victoria alone and focus on Conrad.

  14. Had to go with Coulson rescuing Skye in LOLA. Awesome sceen with lovely comic touches. Plus I always love the Coulson and Skye moments.

  15. I went with the AOS scenes, a noteworthy mention was the confrontation between Skye and Ward - I loved that scene!! Really well acted by both Brett and Chloe.

Mad Men: Megan, upon Don's confession that he came to LA to see her only because her agent called and complained about her, showed him the door.
TBBT: Leonard and Penny's proposal back and forth
Grimm: Wu comes to Teresa's support as a newbie and bonds with her over seeing weird things.

Shoot! I forgot about the scene of the week this week! Didn't participate :(

    Oh well, next time.

My favorites scenes this week were from Revenge (Pascal's death), Revolution (Miles deciding to live) and TBBT (Sheldon hugging Leonard). There were also other scenes that were great, such as Snow crushing Charming's heart and Regina breaking the curse on OUAT, Octavia cutting herself to save Finn on The 100, among some others that right now I don't remember xD

    ReplyDelete
  18. Nashville, Deacon and Rayna talk and Rayna says Scarlett is family.

    ReplyDelete
  19. SHIELD, half of the episode, but from this list Coulson rescuing Skye. Sweet, suspensful and hilarious at the same time. I love the father/daughter bond between these two.

Revenge, Pascal's death, just because it was so shockingly brutal. The blood splattering on Conrad... holy shit.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I have to go with Once Upon A Time, the scene with Regina/David/Snow enacting the curse - so beautifully acted from the trio! :) It was incredibly suspenseful and lasted long enough to have the biggest emotional impact. Second favourite would be Regina breaking the curse and being reunited with Henry. Third is the Outlaw Queen bit at the beginning, too adorable. :)

And I must also say I loved Diane Lockhart cross-examining Alicia Florrick on The Good Wife. I love what their relationship has evolved into! Also, Diane alluded to the fact that people from one race/ethnicity find it harder to tell apart people from other ethnicities (which was mentioned in a s1 episode of TGW!). NOW THAT'S CONTINUITY. Gah, this show never seizes to amaze me.

SHIELD was awesome as well, and the twist in Revenge was quite brutal - my jaw dropped when they showed the blood spatter. The finales of both shows should be interesting!

I sure hope Warner Brothers can find a new home for the Mentalist. I don't think CBS is going to renew the show.

  22. Arrow - Felicity ( Bitch with WiFi), Laurel in action
Supernatural - Ennis' Dad is alive (Bloodlines)
Hart of Dixie - George and Zoe end scene

  23. Takes genius to recognize genius. The short version of Michael Emerson & Carrie Preston.

    ReplyDelete
  24. The Person of Interest, Once Upon A Time, Agents of Shield, The Tomorrow People, Revolution, Nashville, The Mentalist, Warehouse 13, The Originals, and Melissa and Joey scenes mentioned.

    Not on the list:

    Believe: The horse stealing scenes

Warehouse 13: Claudia and her sister say goodbye

Special mention to the last episode of Resurrection (me being late on watching it): Rachel dies and comes back. The returned can't be killed off permanently until whatever force which brought them back decides they should die/disappear apparently.

  26. The Haylijah Kiss! TTP Final scene. And for Other, had to go with TBBT Sheldon hugging Leonard. Also my Steroline reassurance talk scene. (Swoon) for TVD. Damon/Caroline plotting together to get the truth. Arrow..Felicity and Diggle interrogating the guy. Ollie telling Laurel to kick rocks. Lol New Girl...All the guys running in the parking lot for different reasons with all those kids. Hahahaha And Melissa and Joey...Zander with Lennox.

  27. Lots of great moments on TV this past week! Loved the OuaT episode with its many big moments and all the Burke scenes, esp his entrance in Grey's Anatomy was great! The Oathkeeper scene from Game of Thrones was also great and emotional. Lastly, really liked the episode of The 100, the torture scene was brutal to watch and the actors were great in it, with Bellamy's reluctance to carry out the torture, Clarke's desperation and Octavia's compassion. Also, the scene when Clarke confronts her mother was really emotional!

    ReplyDelete
  28. The Mentalist: Abbott reminded Lisbon that Jane might not be aware of her leaving to DC. (LOVE ABBOTT and Lisbon's reaction to this)

Revolution: the arguing&kiss scenes between Rachel and Bass. They're the best in the show imo.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Game of Trones final scene with White Walkers
Person of Interest the bridge sequence
Revolution the all scene between Charlie e Neville (heartbreaking performances of both)

I'm speechless. Nobody put The Nursery scene from The Originals. that was far better than ELijah and Hayley kiss. the line "Nothing true"

and Klaus face. Sometimes its not everything about the ships.

  33. - That GoT's White Walker scene with the baby totally took me by surprise but was awesome. Finally some much needed info on these scary-mummy-like creatures, info that's not even in the books apparently (still on the 3rd book...college doesn't afford a lot of leisure time).
    - PoI's Finch & Grace exchanging places was just heart-breaking. The emotion on Finch' face...top notch acting by Michael Emerson.
    - Regina breaking the curse was a big crowd-pleaser. She has become easily my favorite character on OUAT & her true love for Henry (no matter how annoying or naive that brat can be at times) is a real mark of character development on Regina's part.
    - A scene that wasn't in the list above: Castle's Rick & Kate playing strip poker! This was a fanfiction moment come true (I might have written a fanfic story on the duo playing strip poker sometime back when they still weren't a couple). Well it's not like Castle fans haven't imagined this scenario given the duo's love of poker!

Actually it's usually one of a few shows, like OUAT, The Mentalist or Castle. If it bothers you, ignore that. It's not a contest, every vote counts and people's opinions are very subjective :)
