#1 basic cable drama on Twitter for the week

New York – April 21, 2014 – BBC AMERICA’s award-winning thriller, Orphan Black, returned Saturday night with its highest ever A18-49 rating. The series saw a 97% increase in A18-49, doubling the season one average, and is now second only to the channel’s highest rated series Doctor Who in A18-49. In addition, Orphan Black was the #1 television show on Twitter and Tumblr for the day and is the #1 basic cable drama on Twitter for the week.

Orphan Black recorded a total of 785,000 in P2+ Live+SD Cume.* In its 9:00pm premiere it delivered 620,000 in P2+ and 391,000 in A18-49.

On Saturday, the series reached a new high on Twitter, reaching 1.2 million unique users with over 43,000 tweets about the show. This is up +185% from the previous best (season one finale) and nearly six times greater than the series premiere. The premiere episode alone generated nearly 36,000 tweets, beating several high profile premieres this season including: Fargo, Homeland, True Detective, Vikings, The Americans, Turn and Arrow. On Tumblr, in the month leading up to the premiere there were 1.8 million notes on posts about Orphan Black, including 277,000 on Saturday.

From co-creators Graeme Manson and John Fawcett, Orphan Black hit the ground running with Sarah (Golden Globe® nominee Tatiana Maslany) in a desperate race to find her missing daughter Kira (Skyler Wexler) – a wild pursuit that brings her head-to-head with ruthless pro-clone, Rachel (Maslany). This season also rejoins Sarah’s clone sisters Alison (Maslany) and Cosima (Maslany) as they struggle to keep their clone world a secret while dealing with the harsh reality that no one around them can be trusted. In the upcoming episode, Alison struggles with Aynsley’s death and Cosima grapples with the worsening symptoms of her mysterious sickness, Sarah enlists Art’s (Kevin Hanchard) help to find Kira and is shocked when she learns where the trail leads. (Watch trailer here). The series also stars Jordan Gavaris, Dylan Bruce, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Evelyne Brochu and Matt Frewer.

The Peabody Award winning series is produced by Temple Street Productions in association with BBC AMERICA and Bell Media. Orphan Black’s first season premiered on BBC AMERICA on Saturday, March 30, 2013 following the season premiere of Doctor Who.

  5. Its was great, but not perfect as season 1, actually every episode of season 1 was just pure perfection. Here, on the beginning of the second season, they could have spread a little bit more of a story. Everything was just opened, like couple of new gaps for us to think about, but it brought a feeling like it could be a little bit more something happening before cutting off and leaving it for the ep. 2. Anyone else feel this way? Thanks.

  6. Agree, Im not sayin they packed it bad, and Im not expecting to be that good like pilot, its completely normal for the pilot and the first season to be better than the next, upcoming seasons, but still feel like beside the obvious, that there are too many characters and they should put everyone of them into the picture, they could have just brought one story to the middle, not even have to be finished, I had the feeling like you are constantly waiting for some finishing of some action, and at the end you get nothing but a whole bunch of questions opened waiting for the next ep., like you`ve been reading a book with the half finished sentences. Maybe Im wrong about this, but, have so much experience in this, and Im sayin this only because Im just slightly afraid for this show to not go down on the originality of the wonderful creators, thats all.

  7. I'm also scared that they might lose their way in season 2. They expectations are really high now and they have to deliver. God knows that many shows failed big time after an awesome first season.

  8. I'm sure the network is pleased with the social buzz and the demo numbers but they have to be at least a little disappointed, that with all the off-season hype, the show couldn't break 1m viewers.

  9. I know, right? I know BBCA is spinning these numbers like they're great but I can't help but be worried. This show has been extensively covered in media news, for over a month leading to it's premiere, its online fan base is extremely vocal and a much less buzzed about show like Hell on Wheels gets stronger ratings on Saturday. I really hope that when the DVR ratings are released its a 100% increase in viewers, that's not even that much, but a show this unique and excellent deserves to be getting over a million viewers. Also they should release it on Hulu Plus and Netflix to increase exposure. No idea if it's on Amazon Prime but if not they should get it on there too.

  10. Disappointed, sure. Don't be worried though. Even if the numbers aren't what they wanted, all the numbers are still significantly better than last season. Besides, the show premiered on a holiday weekend which probably didn't help.

  11. As long as they show they have realistic expectations. I only caught up with this show a couple months ago and have seen season one five times since then because my roommates wanted to watch it from the beginning, then their friends would be over and would be interested so they'd watch it too. It's been a long time I've been this into a science fiction show (supernatural and fantasy is more my style) so I'm quite invested in its future. Lol

  12. As am I. I don't foresee BBCA letting go of this series anytime soon.

  13. I don't think they are. You have to remember it doesn't air on CBS or FOX. BBCA doesn't have the coverage other networks have. They cannot reach the same numbers simply because not everybody can watch the show if they don't have the channel.

  14. Agreed. They put a lot of hype into it this time and they'll probably get more awards along the way. When is the last time BBCA was mentioned this much in the media?
The twitter and social media buzz, attention and awards mean money in a much more direct way than ratings.
