Good morning / afternoon / evening / Sunday everyone.

I've been watching a few TV series over the past few months, and I love rankings, so what I did is I ranked the TV series I have watched. A complex and yet brilliant idea.

I will be focusing on the 2013/2014 season, including last summer, thus the shows I'll mention below were on the air at some point between June 2013 and February 2014.

No review you wouldn't read or remarks you'd disagree with, just grades from 10 (excellent) to 1 (poop).

  1. Thanks for the rankings, but I really don't like how this rates my shows really low. Sorry.

  2. Nice post, pretty much agree with, although I may swap Parks & Rec and Arrested Development (I know, not much of a shift, but that's probably my only disagreement).

  3. Great post!! I agree with pretty much everything, though i would probably rate The Newsroom and Agents of SHIELD higher.. The only ones that i haven't watched (or even knew about) are Kabul Kitchen and The Spoils of Babylon so thanks for bringing them to my attention.. I was also really glad to see Rick and Morty here because i just started watching and it is awesome.

  4. Laughing at the Dexter score, sad but true. I am impressed you have managed to watch 16 episodes of Dads, one trailer was enough for me!

  5. Out of curiosity, what's with the copyright symbol in the title? Has spoilertv copyrighted the phrase 'Ultimate Ranking Showdown'?

  6. Nice Post, although I haven't seen a lot of these shows. I tend to watch a lot more Network TV than cable TV. However, I definitely agree with your ratings of Breaking Bad, The Blacklist The Good Wife, The Crazy Ones, Hostages and SHIELD (I found SHIELD very disappointing). I would have ranked Masters of Sex, Brooklyn nine-nine and Enlisted much much lower and I would have ranked Sleepy Hollow and TBBT higher. The last few episodes of Dexter were a major letdown, but I really liked the first 2/3 or the season, so maybe I would have given it a 5, but I understand why you only gave it one "S"! I still have to catch up on Parks and Recreation and I might check out True Detective eventually.

BTW, I just stared watching Hemlock Grove and it looks like something you might like. I've only watched the first few episodes. I'm still in the slightly confused phase, but it looks very promising!

  8. Exactly, I don't know how I do it either, I think I've seen at least 14 out of these 16 episodes while doing something else, like checking my mails, SpoilerTV or eating :D. I'm just sad so see so much talent wasted, but sometimes they do have a couple of funny lines.

The Family Guy crew is evidently good at making fun of TV, they do it every time in countless cutaways on Family Guy (it gets boring after a while, thus my 5/10 for FG), and I just can't fathom the fact that with Dads they're doing exactly the kind of stuff they'd be mocking on FG, and there's no irony, no subtle reference to the fact that they're doing as bad a job as possible (I'm not into that, but some people like the stuff "so bad it's good").

I'll watch Dads till the end — it ends tomorrow, I might as well watch those two eps. Perhaps because I think the cast will talking directly to the viewers and ask us if we're still here and then congratulate us for not giving up, followed by a 15-minute exposé on how the multi-camera sitcom model is really outdated. Um, I probably shouldn't have my hopes up.

And Dexter is now officially a joke (two of my favorite action characters were destroyed in 2013 : John McLane and Dexter Morgan). The parallel with the Breaking Bad ending is astounding, and the proof that it's better to out on a high note than drag along (but then, Dexter would have ended after season 2 imo).

  9. Nope, i just did it to give because I like that symbol - though it's a good idea, I'm coining that and I'll sue the ass off the next person that uses it *evil laugh*

  10. Right now I'm finishing season 2 of The West Wing, it's absolutely brilliant in every aspect, and when I compare it to The Newsroom, even if one show was on a broadcast network in 2001 and the other on the mighty HBO in 2013, there's a clear gap in quality between those two shows by Sorkin.

Now, The Newsroom has lots of qualities, I really liked the Genoa story, but all the relationship stuff bores me to death (though they toned it down a bit in season 2), as do a few characters most of the time (whereas TWW has a stellar ensemble, without any flaw or weak character). Basically I only like Will (= Republican Sam Seaborn/Aaron Sorkin), Sloan (= Donna Moss), Don (= Toby Ziegler) and Charlie Skinner (no TWW equivalent :D).

  11. Thanks, and indeed, you should watch more cable series, especially for drama series FX/AMC/Showtime/HBO/Starz allow for more complex/mature/original stories (though that's not an exact science, broadcast networks can do great things, like The Good Wife, on fire this season).

  13. followed by a 15-minute exposé on how the multi-camera sitcom model is really outdated haha if only that would be really interesting if Dads was some bizarre experiment.

Dexter really was a case of the writers having no clue and Showtime wanting to drag it out. I think it should have ended after S4, Dexter finding Rita in the bath and seeing the extent of his messed up actions.

  14. Well i would never compare TWW with The Newsroom... The West Wing is one of the best show i've seen and by the way i'm jealous that you're watching it for the first time and you're in my favourite moment of the show.. I suppose i just like The Newsroom a little more than you do or maybe it's because i've really missed Sorkin's shows..

Kaboul Kitchen sound very interesting.. I will definitely check it out, if i can find english subtitles anywhere...
