Today's Early Overnight Ratings

This table shows the early overnight ratings. These ratings are normally adjusted later in the day when all the ratings have been consolidated to take into account any local preemptions and/or overruns. You can find all the final adjusted numbers in our Ratings Database. (See the About section below for details about ratings)

If you are new to ratings or still confused, we recommend you read this excellent Ratings FAQ.

Early Ratings Analysis

The analysis below is based on the early household numbers and are NOT the same as the numbers that will be posted in the above table later. (See the About section below)

For more information on the Nielsen Ratings see this Wikipedia Entry.

NOTE: The opinions expressed here are NOT those of SpoilerTV but of the Author of this Article, Marc Berman.

Tuesday 10/29/13 Metered Market Ratings
CBS Wins; NBC Poised for Victory in the Young Demos

Household
Rating/Share
CBS 9.8/16
NBC 6.1/10
Fox 3.7/ 6
ABC 2.8/ 5
CW 1.5/ 2

-Percent Change from the Year-Ago Evening – Tuesday 10/30/12:
Fox: +37, CW: +25, CBS: + 1, NBC: -10, ABC: -47

———-

-Winners:
“NCIS” (CBS), “The Voice” (NBC), “NCIS: Los Angeles” (CBS), “Person of Interest” (CBS)

-Losers (excluding repeats):
“The X Factor” (Fox)

———-

-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS topped all six half-hours in the Tuesday household overnights care of its combination of “NCIS” (#1 for the evening: 12.1 rating/19 share), “NCIS: Los Angeles” (9.4/15) and “Person of Interest” (8.0/14), which bested failed year-ago occupant “Vegas” (7.3/12 on 10/30/12) by 10 percent. But NBC, no doubt, will win the evening in adults 18-49 (and other key young adult demos) thanks to two-hours of “The Voice,” which averaged a 7.1/12 from 9-11 p.m. Comparably, “The Voice” built from lead-in “The Biggest Loser” (#2: 4.2/ 7 at 8 p.m.) by 69 percent.

Head-to-head from 9-10 p.m., “The Voice” more than doubled the second-hour of competing “The X Factor” on Fox (7.1/11 vs. 3.5/ 6) with a 103 percent overnight advantage. Two-hours of “The X Factor,” which revealed the top 12 finalists, could only muster a 3.7/ 6 from 8-10 p.m., which could be an all-time series low. At this point, Fox should not even consider a fourth season.

Over at ABC, an encore of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” lost considerable steam, of course, with a fourth-place 2.6/ 4 in the overnights at 8 p.m. But the positive news was lead-out sitcom “The Goldbergs,” which did not decline week-to-week despite the lack of lead-in support. “The Goldbergs” finished third at 9 p.m., with a 3.8/ 6. And it led into also freshman “Trophy Wife” at a fourth-place 3.0/ 5 at 9:30 p.m., which was seven perfect above the 2.8/ 5 one week earlier and 15 percent above failed year-ago occupant “Don’t Trust the B____ in Apt. 23” (2.6/ 4 on 10/30/12). Chances are ABC will be issuing a back-nine episode order for both “The Goldbergs” and “Trophy Wife” at any moment.

At 10 p.m. on ABC was a repeat of “Shark Tank” at a very distant third-place 2.3/ 4.

Over at The CW, “The Originals” (#5: 1.6/ 2) built week-to-week by seven percent in the overnights, while lead-out “Supernatural” (#5: 1.4/ 2) dropped by seven percent.

Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.

Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.

  1. I can't remember the last time Supernatural got a 1.4.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Those are the Household Ratings, not the 18-49 Demo Numbers.

    ReplyDelete
  3. The Goldbergs being steady would be a mild surprise, but I think it makes sense because I've been saying for a few weeks that the lead-in is not helping it that much considering the lack of compatibility. But I still expected to loose some. Ultimately though, I think not facing another comedy, New Girl, is probably a bigger plus than loosing Shield. I am surprised he thinks Trophy Wife will get a back nine though

    ReplyDelete
  4. Hmm, I thought The Goldbergs would would fall considerably without a new AoS as a lead-in. I am surprised. The Goldbergs, maybe, but I doubt that Trophy Wife will be getting a back order.

I don't know why FOX thought it was a good idea airing The X Factor against The Voice.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Back 9 for Trophy wife ? I don't think so..

    ReplyDelete
  6. Sorry, I know this is a bit mean, but I hope that means the X Factor fell below 2.0 again.

    ReplyDelete
  7. it was a filler epsiode last night with charlie and dorthy. That kept some people away. Next's numbers might be low too because of the dog episode but in 2 weeks they'll be back up.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Airing on a different day and against the voice that is likely. I am not sure what FOX was thinking

    ReplyDelete
  9. Yeah I also find it unlikely unless they change things around and try it out on Wednesdays

    ReplyDelete
  10. Yeah, that was kinda stupid on Fox's part.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I think the competition factor is stronger than the lead-in factor for the goldbergs, but we shall see.

I agree with you that FOX decision was puzzling.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Yeah, I am not too optimistic about that, either.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I'm really starting to enjoy Trophy Wife, I hope it does get a back 9 even if a S2 is unlikely.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Does this mean 'Person of Interest' rose versus last week? I know last week had a 2.2 in the demo but for the life of me can't remember what the overnight was. How is 'Person of Interest' doing compared to most CBS Dramas at 10:00 P.M. on Tuesday nights? I know about a quarter of them fail, but that's about it.

    ReplyDelete
  15. A little Yeah for Trophy Wife.

    ReplyDelete
  16. It had an 8.2 overnight HH rating last week.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I think it's slightly down in overnights but it is very hard to extrapolate anything from it to what it means for the ratings.

Person of Interest is currently CBS's #1 10 pm drama, slighly ahead of CBS, and miles ahead of Hostages, Elementary, Blue Bloods or The Mentalist.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Good for the Goldbergs, Im loving that show! this year is a good year for scripted tv, havent been so hooked up to my tv in years.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Maybe The Original rises to 1.0 and Supernatural falls to 1.0(rating 18-49)?
I know these results can deceive, 'cause on Rating News 28th October I read 'World Series prevailed over football' last night, but in the end it was the opposite.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Why do you want it to fail?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Surprised at Supernatural's drop. Still a good % increase for CW over last year. I always worry when Ackles and Padalecki announce they've signed for S10 that fans will assume that S10 is now a go and they don't have to watch - if the rating totally tank, the show won't be back... That said, it will be interesting to see the DVR final adjusted numbers.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Ignore the overnights, we don't know if the show has dropped or not.

    ReplyDelete
  23. That's why you should ignore the overnights and wait for the ratings. This is especially true in the cw's case

    ReplyDelete
  24. 1.4 instead of 1.5. What a tragedy ._. and like tvfa90 wrote, Supernatural obtained 1.3 on May 1st 2013, not centuries ago. Be serious.

    ReplyDelete
  25. A little hefty to discount entirely. This isn't a "my hair is on fire the show is dead" post... one week isn't a make or break either - not the point of my observation.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Even a rating of 0.9 would be good to me, last year Supernatural's season low was 0.7, and it still was better than 90210, Gossip Girl(except the series finale), Cult, Emily Owens and Hart of Dixie's season highs.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I don't get your analogy, I am sorry. Regardless, you should ignore the overnights 100% especially when it comes to the CW because the number of households correlates very poorly with the 18-49s that watch the channel. It has been common to see increases in the overnights that result in decreases in 18-49s and vice-versa. Feel free to ignore my advice though, but you should disregard them.

    ReplyDelete
  28. My point is that I understand the ratings as I work in the industry. I also understand viewership as that is one of my areas of research.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Your comment does suggest otherwise, but ok.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Thanks, I had doubts :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. The Goldbergs even with last week, while Trophy Wife up two-tenths. I guess no competition from FOX did help.

  33. I think this really shows that the goldbergs is a stronger show than Back in The Game!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Let see how much (if) BITG falls.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think it will fall a bit sans MF, but I think that regardless this shows that BITG has the better timeslot.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Ouch at POI! I guess the increased competition from the voice and the x factor were too much. Still I didn't expect that much crossed audience and it really puts those LA ratings in perspective. Poor POI :s

    ReplyDelete
  37. Actually, it doesn't. And your condescending attitude is really not appreciated. I believe it is simply your misunderstanding of what I was saying.

    ReplyDelete
  38. X-Factor did not air against POI. Only TV. Shows how much audience CF really bleeds from TV when you see these numbers.

    ReplyDelete
  39. You are right, I stand corrected.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Elena Wonderland30 October 2013 at 15:44

    Yaaay Supernatural :D 1.1 <3

    ReplyDelete
  41. Even TBL, DWTS or Shark Tank (other realities) beat The X-Factor. Ouch!

    ReplyDelete
  42. It looked totally dead last week but if this holds in finals I say it has somewhat of a fighting chance. I am no longer ready to call it a certain cancellation but rather a likely one.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Supernatural and TVD are CW best shows. CW would have to be stupid to cancel/ end one of them especially with how horrible its new shows are doing these past few years.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Drop in number of viewers for Supernatural is disconcerting. Filler episodes like this ruin the momentum imo.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Are you really giving me attitude for no reason? Be serious.

    ReplyDelete
  46. When will people finally learn that early ratings =/= overnight ratings. A drop in the former means nothing for the latter. See this week's Supernatural. Why all the anxiety? Chill out!

    ReplyDelete
  47. I've tried over and over to tell that to people here, it's impossible to make them believe.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Yes. I agree. And that's been my argument for many years. And really not my point at all. Which I'm now removing because I'm not into spending my days being attacked in comments...

    ReplyDelete
  49. Wow ouch for POI. I have a feeling that people who saw the first promo for this week's episode after last week's episode aired and saw in that promo that this week's episode was so Shaw and Root centric they probably decided to skip it. If that is the case, I feel sorry for them and their loss. They missed on of the best episodes in the show's history. And they missed a plot that worked for both Root and Shaw and Finch and Reese and worked well.

    ReplyDelete
  50. maybe overnight and early ratings shouldn't be posted?

    ReplyDelete
  51. I still like to read them even though they are barely useful but they get it going while there are no actual ratings. For the major networks (especially CBS) they work okayish in terms of predicting direction of the show, although not always. We should just need to take them with a grain of salt and not celebrate or be let down by then because they could easily be wrong, it is what it is

    ReplyDelete
  52. I don't know why anyone would worry in the slightest about SPN's fate. I quit the show years ago but it's clear as day that this is one of the steadiest shows on television, with an audience that hasn't over approximately 200 timeslot changes. On top of that, it's ahead of most of the shows on the network so The CW is in no position to let it go. This show will almost certainly not end before the actors decide to call it quits, like Smallville.

And besides, people don't watch to save the show, they watch because they want to see it. So announcing its renewal isn't gonna affect the viewership. Look how many dying shows had fans trying to rally everyone into watching, so the show might be saved. Does that ever work? Nope.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Their hate's justified. And I don't imagine they're missing out on anything.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Looks like The Originals are getting more viewers every week! I´m so glad it is doing well, it is such an entertaining show.

    ReplyDelete
  55. As far as Shaw goes, I understand where the hate is coming from. Her personality has made her a very hard character to warm up to. I think it was a big mistake by Jonah and Greg to have her be so cold hearted. I can tolerate her though. She isn't that bad. What I really don't understand is the hate for Root. People say she's annoying, say Amy Acker isn't good enough, etc. I have no idea how they're coming to that opinion. I love the character. She makes a great villain and I think Amy Acker does a great job playing her. You don't think they missed out on anything? Did you see Mors Praematura? Collier? And especially the ending with Root and Finch? No, I have to disagree on that. They missed a few things.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I think people hate Root because it just doesn't make sense anymore. It's intriguing, but it also doesn't make sense. Like, Reese could beat down every villain in each episode but Root could get away. I have a theory that people don't like when a villain stays too long, because it shows that the main hero is not as strong as it is purported to be. No matter how much people love the villains, they still want them to be defeated. Root staying this long is just nothing more than fanservice that gradually fades away butwriters don't know that.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I have no problems with Root but I agree with this. I think POI, unlike many other shows in which I typically have the opposite complaint, should not have villains stick around long, as it takes away from the main characters.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Supernatural actually got a 1.3 HH on May 1st and it turned out to be a 0.9 demo. I don't think we'll be looking at a drop too large.

    http://www.spoilertv.com/2013/05/ratings-news-2nd-may-2013.html

Also, the next week it got a 1.4 HH and ended up adjusting to a 1.0 demo in the finals.
