———-

-Ratings Breakdown:
Led by the “NCIS” duo, CBS won this first Tuesday in the household overnights with ease care of its season-premiere combination of “NCIS” (#1 for the evening: 12.5 rating/20 share), “NCIS: Los Angeles” (#1: 9.8/15) and relocated “Person of Interest” (#1: 7.9/14). But that 7.9 for “Person of Interest” was actually 15 percent below the 9.3/16 for the debut of failed year-ago time period occupant “Vegas.” And last season it opened with a 9.4/14 in the Thursday 9 p.m. hour on 9/27/12. Let’s see what happens when new sitcom “The Crazy Ones” and relocated “Two and a Half Men” open in place of “Person of Interest” tomorrow evening. Was it really worth making the shift?

Both “NCIS” and “NCIS: Los Angeles” were on par from their year-ago season-openers, which is a real plus for “NCIS” given it faced the debut of the highly anticipated “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” on ABC.

On paper, a 7.7/12 in the household overnights for the launch of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” from 8-9 p.m. is certainly positive. It will, after all, bring considerably more young viewers into the time period than year-ago occupant “Dancing With the Stars” (which was stronger in the overnights with an 8.9/14 on the year-ago evening). But it did trail aforementioned “NCIS” and the first half of two hours of “The Voice” on NBC (#2: 9.0/14) by 38 percent and 14 percent, respectively. Once “S.H.I.E.L.D.” settles in, the question to ponder is if this will be a mass appeal hit or just a core favorite. Stay tuned.

Leading out of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” was the debut of sitcom “The Goldbergs,” which finished third with a respectable 6.0/ 9 in the overnights at 9 p.m. Comparably, that outdelivered the year-ago season-premiere of former time period occupant “Happy Endings” (4.5/ 7 on 10/23/12) by 33 percent. Next was the premiere of another new sitcom, “Trophy Wife,” which scored a third-place 4.7/ 7 at 9:30 p.m. and beat the season-opening episode of former time period occupant “Don’t Trust the B____ in Apt. 23” (3.4/ 5 on 10/23/12) by 38 percent. But that 4.7 in the household overnights was 22 percent below lead-in “The Goldbergs,” and most new shows drop in the vicinity of 10 to 20 percent in week two. This is not positive.

At 10 p.m., new ABC drama “Lucky 7” was not so lucky with a DOA 3.1/ 5. Comparably, “Lucky 7” trailed the season-premiere of year-ago occupant “Private Practice” (5.2/ 9 on 9/25/12) by a hefty 40 percent. Note to the networks: dramas about lottery winners do not work.

Over at second-place NBC, two-hours of “The Voice” (#2: 9.1/14 from 8-10 p.m.) gave a boost to the season-premiere of relocated “Chicago Fire,” which returned with a second-place 5.6/10 in the overnights at 10 p.m. Comparably, that was 19 percent above its year-ago series opener (4.7/ 8 on Wednesday 10/12/12 at 10 p.m.) and 47 percent above “Parenthood” on the year-ago evening (3.8/ 6 on 9/25/12). The demo results will, no doubt, also be on the double-digit plus side.

Opposite a night of heavy competition on the Big 3, Fox finished a distant fourth in each of its four half-hours with double-digit erosion from one week earlier. Episode two of “Dads” opened with a 2.8/ 5 at 8 p.m., which was 33 percent below its week-ago launch (4.2/ 7 on Sept. 17) and 30 percent below an episode of “New Girl” on the year-ago evening (4.0/ 6 on 9/25/12). Episode two of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” followed with a 3.1/ 5, which slid by 33 percent from one week earlier but was up by seven percent from failed year-ago occupant “Ben & Kate” (2.9/ 4 on 9/25/12).

Moving to 9 p.m., “New Girl” also scored a 3.1/ 5, which dropped by 21 percent from one week earlier (3.9/ 6 on Sept. 17) and 18 percent from the 3.8/ 6 on the year-ago evening. And sophomore “The Mindy Project,” which should not have seen a second year, slid to a 2.4/ 4 at 9:30 p.m. Since Fox is all about the young adult demos, let’s see what happens when they are released.

In series-premiere news, CW dud “Capture” concluded with a mere (and very last-place) 0.5/ 1 in the overnights at 9 p.m. Needless to say, this won’t be returning. Earlier in the evening was the season-finale of “Whose Line is it Anyway” at a 1.2/ 2 at 8 p.m. (#5), which for The CW makes this returning revival a success. An encore of “Whose Line” followed with a 1.0/2 at 8:30 p.m.

  1. really hope that trophy wife bounces back. one of my favourite new comedies of the season (alongside back in the game which i saw online). not surprised about shield. if the ratings keep going as they are, it could possibly be the no. 1 rated program of the season...

  2. They should have paired Trophy Wife with Modern Family. I think it would have gotten better ratings in that timeslot.

  3. Go, Shield and Person Of Interest! And NCIS. And NCIS:LA. And New Girl. And...
Yeah, I might be watching a lot on this night.

  4. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ran over by a minute, so I kind of expect The Goldbergs to drop in the finals. I tried to watch Trophy Wife, but it didn't catch me. When the CW starts its programs, Tuesdays become a real try to figure out the DVR, live watch and OnDemand juggle, so Trophy Wife would have been lost in the shuffle.

  5. True! I think the family comedy pairing would have been much better. As much as I want Super Fun night to succeed, i don't think it can deliver plus the Pilot was critically panned.

  6. Really happy for Agents of Shield though I did expect it would do big. Hoping Brooklyn Nine Nine and Trophy Wife do better, I thought they were the better comedies out there right now. Still sad about Mindy but it will always be my little bubble show that could...try to do better...

  8. Shame about Trophy Wife but if it can remain in the 1.8 and above range it could get a second season as The Neighbors+The Middle hit these numbers and Tuesday is a very competitive night.

  10. Ugh, I hope PoI isn't down too much. But I've heard from several people who are regular viewers that they didn't know the show has been moved to a new night. :-/

  11. So which will be cancelled first - Lucky 7 or Dads?

    And yay for SHIELD!

    ReplyDelete
  12. First My Guess is Dads but Both will be cancelled.

  13. I find it impressive that BOTH The Voice and Shield got a 4.6 in the demo (at least in the 8pm hour).

  14. Yay for Shield!

Person of Interest did drop because of the move didn't it? At least it's still a winner.

  15. Starts again on Friday. Adam has been on vacation

  16. Yikes, that's a huge drop and it still did better than the other Fox comedies so far.

    ReplyDelete
  17. i think that Lucky 7 won't have a 3rd episode

    ReplyDelete
  18. Jut noticed Chicago Fire was up. Yay! Good news for that show.

  19. I'm thinking POI will tick up a few notches once the rest of the viewers realize what night and time it's on at. I thought the premiere did an excellent job of showing that everybody would get their moments to shine and everybody had funny and entertaining moments with each other. Many were worried that Fusco had been forgotten and that Shaw would take screen time away from Reese. The premiere did a great job showing that those things aren't true.

  20. Happy for Chicago Fire kind of surprised by S.H.I.E.L.D doing so well because it was kind of a let down but is the actors that were actually in the movie that were in the pilot continue to stay on the show on at least a recurring bases it may help. I bet NCIS breaks 20 million next week but I wonder if ratings will drop any once Ziva is officially gone.

  21. Anyone know when the SpoilerTV TV Series Competition will Continue?? its been almost 2 weeks since the last round. I was getting super hyped to see the winner... nek minnut... 3 years later

  22. Well done SHIELD up against the biggest show on TV and still did very good, don't expect huge numbers next week but hopefully decent solid ones
