Once Upon a Time - Season 3 - ABC Pulls Cast Photos due to fan backlash

13 Sept 2013

Yesterday ABC released the Cast Promotional Photos for Season 3 of Once Upon a Time.

Now it appears that due to the fan backlash on these photos, that ABC seem to have removed these photos from their Press Site and other sites like TV Line have removed theirs.

Fans did not seem to care much for the photos as we saw on our own post here, as well as on social media outlets such as Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr.

We still have them below :)

What do you think? Were ABC right to pull the images? Are the photos that bad? Do you hope to see some new and hopefully better ones later?

Sound off below in the comments and vote in the poll.

  1. Wait, seriously? I guess it's good that ABC's promotional department is so responsive to fans. The group cast photo was okay.

  2. I don't watch the show, but yeah these photos are terrible. The cloud background, the blurry effect, the setting, everything is a mess.

    ReplyDelete
  3. The only worse promo pics I've seen this season are the ones for Dracula.

    ReplyDelete
  4. At least they looked like some work had been out in them, these look like the ABC spent five minutes on them.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Yeah they were bad but the majority of promo pics for shows are pretty rough especially the longer a show goes on and they promote it less. Seems like a bit an overreaction from fans and ABC,

    ReplyDelete
  6. The group picture was ok. Reminded me too much of Lost though, there wasn't enough of the OUAT feel we've come to love from the past season's cast pictures

    The individual shots are terrible.
I like promo shots to be in character and the idea that Emma would wear a pink gown is ridiculous and I'm not a big fan of Snows outfit either.

The blurriness and shadow embossing is also amateur. It looks like a kid's first time in Photoshop. The background is too generic for such stylized costumes. I mean I know it is meant to be Neverland or whatever but we as fans haven't really experience the terrain to make that distinction. (and why would they look so fabulous there anyway?!)

I expected more from a promotional department who has given us such beautiful material in the past.

  7. Well Castle has (almost) 6 seasons and its cast had gorgeous promo photos. I think it's about who they let do the work.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Yeah, I was like WTF when I saw the character cards from that show... but as Babar said, at least there was effort in those

    ReplyDelete
  9. Wow, they let anyone with a camera and a copy of photoshop call themselves a professional these days.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Good on ABC for pulling them. The editing on them was atrocious. I'm hoping they'll reshoot them (with a better photographer) and go back to their roots. Complete with present day and FTL portraits, to give it a little extra kick.

  11. So agree with the Emma in pink dress also ditto on everything else you wrote

Yes, most of the individual photos are that bad; most of them are out of focus, some have odd expressions, and some have peculiar costuming. Hook's is horrible; VERY out of focus. Belle's is surprisingly good; in focus, good expression, and a cool costume. Now, what about this year's group photo with the Charmings in the foreground and everyone else in the background?...Rumple is the most popular character, yet he's shoved the furthest back. In last year's group photo, everyone could be well seen, and there was no highlighting of some characters, while shoving the rest in the background. There must be a better shot for season 3 that will represent ALL the regulars, not just the Charmings. Please ABC, give us something good.

  13. what with the Blurry effect that kills everything specially on the Snow pic she looks really weird e.e and putting Emma on a Dress¿? definetly not the smarther move at least choose a preety and confortable one not that tacky pink mess they put her on... the only pic is worth saving is the one with the entire cast

    ReplyDelete
  14. They weren't great but my god some people need to get a life, you're either going to watch the show or not regardless of whether promo pics meet your standards.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I noticed that the photos had been removed and wondered why. It seems weird to me that they would do it on account of "fan backlash" -- who knew their publicity department was even paying attention to comments on the web? Is it just your assumption or do we know for certain that this is why they pulled the pictures?

Also, I'd like to remind everyone that ABC doesn't spend its money on photoshoots for the show's fans. They do it to be able to promote the show and use the images in the various media platforms -- on the Internet, in billboards, on TV, etc. The images are also used for key art, other posters and of course, the DVD artwork and packaging.

So while I'm sure they know fans see and possibly collect these photos, I'm surprised they cared as much about people's reactions to go as far as to take them off their press site. (Again, PRESS site -- not meant for the fans!)

Lastly, to those who wrote nasty comments such as "they let anyone with a camera and a copy of photoshop call themselves a professional these days" -- you ought to know that these images are the work of Bob D'Amico, who has been ABC's chief photographer for more years than most of us have existed. So no need to be disrespectful even if you don't particularly like the work on this specific set. I agree they could have been more creative, but OUAT fans should at least be thankful they got NEW pics this year, because for "Grey's Anatomy," "The Middle" and "The Neighbors" ABC just released previously-unseen shots from last season's shoot.

    ReplyDelete
  16. They were awful, everything was bad: the background, the editing (I know the blur filters photoshop has are awesome, but that doesn't mean you have to use them so much) and in some cases even the look of the actors.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Reading this, I thought, what the hell!? After looking at the pictures, I wholeheartedly agree with ABC's decision. These pictures are absolutely HORRIBLE! Whomever the graphic designer was for these really dropped the ball here. Also, "Emma" looks half asleep! ABC definitely did a good thing pulling them.

@Jonathan: I'm sure someone else did these, and just slapped Bob D'Amico's name on it. He may be a great photographer, but these photos are poo-poo.

    ReplyDelete
  18. This is not jut about the promo pics. It's about ABC's blatant disregard for the fans and the awful merchandise they have put out. Charging $29.99 for a character t-shirt with a decal that is destroyed after one 30 degree wash for example. The T-shirts are as badly designed as these pics and they are making huge profits from cheap crap! We have had hundreds of complaints on the fan site about the merchandising/promotion etc.

ABC/Disney - The Home of Imagination. And this is what fans get!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Good for them,I guess.They weren't good,buy I still think we're overreacting.
It's a popular show going into its third season.I doubt fans tuning in has anything to do with promotional pictures.
I would rather have them release a trailer, than spend time coming up with new ones.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Cast pics for Grey's Anatomy have always been decent.

    ReplyDelete
  21. What were they expecting? Someone who only played around in photoshop for a couple of time could have done with something better, not to mention more creative.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I didn't realize there was more to the fans' dismay than just this. Thank you for pointing it out and I'm sorry to hear that ABC charges such outrageous prices for crappy t-shirts. Although I think you'll agree fans should know better than to pay $30 bucks for a cheap, plain shirt with the show logo printed on it. It's equivalent to buying stuff at the Disneyland souvenir shops -- tempting but way overpriced and not a very good bang for your buck.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Agreed. Have seen far better t-shirts (and promo pics for that matter) designed by the fans.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Fan backlash about some photos? Jeez, are fans really that idle and have nothing better to do than to browse for some photos and even take time to write angrily about their quality. Good God. Watch the show, don't watch the show. But photos? #whocares

    ReplyDelete
  25. I don't know if Rumple really is the most popular character. I doubt anyone can be singled out like that to be honest. But I agree that it's wrong to shove more than half of your cast into the background like that. Last season's picture was much, much better.

    ReplyDelete
  26. László Harsányi13 September 2013 at 12:16

Bob D'Amico or not, this was a bad promotional series, and not because of the fans' outcry. Most of those pictures are simply bad for promotion, because of the cheap and talentless photoshopping - bad especially for the press. Just think of it from their side: were I be an editor of a magazine I wouldn't use any of those motion blurred, cast shadowed images, because people who don't know their source would think that it's ME who lacks both the skill to do it right and the sense to realize it.

I would also like to mention that regardless how experienced the photographer is, the picture of Jinnifer Goodwin was simply terrible. She isn't exactly willowy, but on this picture she looks fat, twice of her real size. It is a disparaging pose/angle and the photographer should have seen it. (Or the marketing guy, who picked this one from the batch.)

    ReplyDelete
  27. LOL at least they heard us. Those phots were disastrous, they can do much better.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I didn't really mind on what they were wearing, it was more of the effect and background that disappointed me. To be honest I thought they were horribly photoshopped pictures and not promo shots at first.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Honestly, I think the fans and audience deserve high quality promotional material. Without the audience and the fans, ABC wouldn't be making millions of dollars out of the show, so they better be willing to do quality work.

    ReplyDelete
  30. The one of Emma is OK, the rest looks VERY bad. Especially the picture of Hook.

    ReplyDelete
  31. i don't even think it was supposed to look magical/mystical. it seems more like they didn't spend any time or effort whatsoever in planning/editing them. not only did the ratings go down last season and promotion is important, but they should care more for their fans.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Good! I'm glad they pulled them.I don't know why people think they were pulled because of their costumes? The costumes had nothing to do with it,it was everything else!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Most of these photos were horrendously photoshopped and out of sync.I don't care if Ansel Adams was the photographer,if the photos are bad you either re-shoot or don't use them, period. Maybe they should have hired Annie Leibovitz.

Did you really look at Lana's photo? I thought they used a stand in or she had gone under the knife, for it definitely didn't look like her at all..

    ReplyDelete
  34. Agreed! OUAT could be a gold mine for ABC if they sold better stuff. It's a show based on fairy tales we all know! Come on, how much does Disney make a year selling silly trinkets? TONS. For example, if ABC sold those pins they were giving out at SDCC, they'd make a nice profit. I know most fans would swoop down on those.

These pictures are outrageously bad. Not only because of the heavy handed photo shopping done but because it has *nothing* to do with the season. NOTHING. Emma in the dress would be great if they made it more appropriate for NL. Like having her fighting against the dress as she moved through a jungle. Rough up the dress a bit. Rumple looks old and like they've sprayed him with several coats of spray tan. Belle's is the best of the bunch, but the knife is out of character. I have no idea what Snow is wearing, at all. Hook...oh my god. Colin is a gorgeous man and he looks silly and deranged. But nothing but these photos says, "we've gone off to NL to rescue Henry from a shadow ripping Peter Pan." Ugh.

I am laughing so hard right now and am quite happy with this.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Yeah the group photo looks very LOST like.

    ReplyDelete
  37. For those saying that people who complained should get a life or that ABC shouldn't have "pandered" - those photos were not just a disservice to the fans. They were a disservice to the show and the actors as well. Both deserve to be showcased in the best possible light and those photos did not do that.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yikes, these are very... 90's. Sure, they are just promotional photos but if I was a fan, I wouldn't be too impressed.

    ReplyDelete
  39. They were pulled due to fans? Seriously? This is too funny.

    ReplyDelete
  40. The subjects were gorgeous but I'm not liking ABC's trend of adding in the background...very poorly, I might add...after the pictures have been taken.

    ReplyDelete
  41. DarkForgottenLostEvil8.5Doctor13 September 2013 at 15:45

The backgrounds do look awfully fake, and I'm not sure about the blur effect, but pulling them entirely? That seems a bit extreme to me. I mean, yeah, they could have taken the trouble to do nicer shots, but I'm not sure it's worth this much controversy.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Last year they had those awesome pictures around Storybrooke (or the year before) with Belle in the diner with the chipped cup. They were really cool looking and had some easter eggs in them. These were a little disappointing. I did really like the group shot though.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I agree with everything you said.
But that doesn't mean "anyone with a camera and a copy of Photoshop" can do better. It's obviously way more complicated than that, and most fans don't quite appreciate what goes into making a photoshoot happen.
While the photos do look terrible, and the decision to release those out of a whole set of hundreds (if not thousands) of images taken that day *is* questionable, I don't know that the photographer's necessarily to blame (if you look at other photos he's done for ABC over the years, nothing has ever been this embarrassingly bad) and not the editing/"post" guys or the ones in the marketing/publicity department who pick them out. I mean, I assume these were taken against a green screen of sorts, and THEN photoshopped to death...

    ReplyDelete
  44. Everything doesn't come out perfect, for anyone. But in this case the photos look so bad it can't just be chalked up to a "bad day". Seems to me the whole situation has little to do with the photographer (who knows what he's doing, judging by other photoshoots he's done for ABC) and more to do with ABC's publicity department and the people responsible for "retouching" the images. Anyways, I look forward to seeing what they end up releasing instead. (PS: I actually liked the group photo, but I don't watch the show so I didn't dissect it.)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Completely agree about Lana's photo.
I usually love her outfits and make-up, and she has pulled off some crazy hair-do's before, but this time... She's barely recognizable. I don't know what they were thinking with this shade of lipstick, but it goes horrible with her (fake?!) tan. And the blur around her hands is making my head spin. :S
Tbh, even her personal photos on twitter (where she's not wearing any make-up) are more flattering.

On the other hand, what's with the photoshopped clouds, the cartoon "rock" and the puddle (?!) they are surrounded by in the character shots?
I suppose the "Lost" associations for the group shot are intentional, but I would have liked to see something a little more creative than that (heck, I have seen more creative posters by fans on Tumblr!).
The props are also too outdated and cliche for a photoshoot for a fantasy show. No concept, no imagination, not even decent photoshop effects. :/ Not to mention that colour-wise the visuals are dull and lack proper contrast.
I don't think the photographer made much of an effort for this shoot.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I liked the group photo too! I don't believe the fault lies exclusively with the photographer,i was just commenting on your reaction about the photographer.I wonder if they will even re shoot,or even put something else out?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Gosh, Lana's barely recognizable, (I think it's mostly due to bad hair/make-up, and that dreadful blur filter), Ginny's photo is equally unflattering, Emma in a dress hardly makes sense (considering she's wearing a ragged vest in the group shot and in the first episode of the season), and the rest of the characters are wearing already used outfits (David, poor Henry, Hook, Belle).
Rumple's is the only half-decent shot of them all.
And don't even get me started on the background... It's a fantasy show, for crying out loud, and the best they could do to represent Neverland is a fake "rock", a puddle, black sand and blurry clouds?!

Good call on pulling the images, ABC.

    ReplyDelete
  48. In reference to your comment to me below.Lana's costume wasn't bad,she has worn this type of gown in the show and in last years photo (or S1 photos,i forget),even her headdress she has worn before.. What bothers me is Lana doesn't look like herself one bit,and i can't get over that,ha!

BTW- For everyone. That is not a blur filter, they didn't use any filter, its a F***Up pure and simple.I believe that is why the photos were pulled...

    ReplyDelete
  49. I don't feel like any television show has really ever given what I would all great promo photos. More and more over the past few years, it's painfully obvious that the actors are photoshopped into unrealistic backgrounds, and usually even more painfully obvious that they were all photographed separately.

This close to the premiere, what good will promo photos be doing anyway? Give me set photos at high quality teasing some of the scenes to expect in the season premiere! Or can you imagine if studio promo departments started doing editorial photo shoots of the cast during hair and make up (I'm thinking of the Russel James backstage photo shoot from ANTM cycle 16.)

    ReplyDelete
  50. The costume is not so bad (although I like her past outfits much better). The headdress however is different from the one she wore in s1 - that one was just fabric, this new one looks encrusted.

Anyway, I blame it mostly on the make-up and the way she seems out of focus. I don't know how they retouched those photos, but those blurry lines are making my eyes water.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Oh, how could I forget the ridiculous wardrobe?

    ReplyDelete
  52. László Harsányi13 September 2013 at 17:43

You are right and as you see the only thing where I blamed the photographer was the (IMHO) disparaging picture of JG, because I think a photographer, professional on that field, should have seen that it's not right. Even there I mentioned that there could be better ones only this one was picked by the show's account at the Marketing Dept. All the other thing, the concept before the photoshoot and the horrible post-processing after it are again the responsibility of the Marketing Dept. and I think it's not the first time when that branch has dropped the ball in a big way.

Among the ABC shows I follow only Castle and I must say that during the time even the smallest hint of creativity has been vanished from its promotion (photo and video alike) and was replaced with the excessive use of PS.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Good catch! I didn't notice the headdress encrusted before. That blurring effect i at first thought was a printing error when it went to press. But looking at Hook i noticed it doesn't effect all of him,so it probably was done intentionally. If so its a bigger screw up than a printing press mistake..Yikes!

    ReplyDelete
  54. they would be amazing if the background wasnt weird

    ReplyDelete
  55. Although I agree that these photos don't do the cast justice, I had time to think about the concept...

The dark clouds are kind of misty and the blurriness might be a wink at something "astral" or "temporal" given that this season might have a lot of LOST similarities (ie: Smoke Monster ---> confront past situations/confront one's own identity)

Going with the Lost idea, this place might be a kind of second chance for these characters to embrace the better parts of themselves by being confronted with things that came before...

In terms of Emma, she never had an additional identity (past incarnation) the way almost everyone else has, so to put her in dress might mean that she could be confronted with the possibility of a "what if" sanario of being that "princess" she might of been, hadn't everything been set in motion. She might be able to explore a more feminine side somehow.

Don't get me wrong, these pics are not good and they could have done a better job no doubt, but I can appreciate the concept to some degree...

    ReplyDelete
  56. Looks like some bad photoshop

    ReplyDelete
  57. I agree that she doesn't look like herself and I wonder if it is just a bad make-up job, or if it implies she is not going to be herself? -She almost seems more like Rumple (the way he looks in FTL)....there's almost a pail green-silverness to her face and it's the same in the group shot. She looks way more otherworldly (unhuman) than everyone else and I wonder if there is an actual reason for there choice here????

    ReplyDelete
  58. Yes the photos are bad but I can't think of any cast or individual photo for any TV show or film that haven't been bad since Photoshop came around its been overused as a fan of Lost I like that it reminds of the show but come on there in Neverland which is an island so the photo makes sense in that regard. Why are people so shocked by this the photos are bad and they were last year as well the characters are no more visible in this group photo than last year.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Though season 2's cast photo didn't really make any sense - i mean, why were they having an all friendly barbecue/party?! - I still understand where you are coming from, however. Both Regina and Rumpel are pushed in to the back as opposed to the Charming family who are prioritised at the front. Seems more than slightly unfair

    ReplyDelete
  60. I was talking to my friend earlier today about the promo photo's and we both agreed that it would have been way more fun, and possibly even beneficial, if they were to have made a competition. If the ouat graphic designers were to have given the fans simple photo's of the character's, I am more than sure some fans (who are extremely talented) could have made exceptionally amazing poster designs. And then ouat could have made a competition to picks whose's they thought was the best.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Might be a good idea for something else during the season but not for Promo photos.Even if half of the fans could draw well could you imagine how many thousands of pictures they would have to sort through.Multiple that by how many cast members there are and it would be a monumental project. It would be impractical and too time consuming, not even taking account the money it would cost ABC to hire extra people to help out with it...

    ReplyDelete
  62. passionate fans I love the show, don't care for the promo pics but to start a mock all over social media seems a bit much. So the pictures suck-don't people have day jobs to keep them busy

    ReplyDelete
  63. LoL! Leave it to you to make me look at it differently! I need to think about this, but i hope your right because i got really upset when i saw these photos, specially Lana's. Lord,i love your mind! :)

    ReplyDelete
  64. 1. They can do better! 2. They sould be less angry in the pictues. 3. why is regina in evil garb? Cmon do they watch the show?

    ReplyDelete
  65. I don't have a problem other than the photos have a blurred look to them.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Well otherwise they're more than just awful.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I think the "fan backlash" maybe opened their eyes. They wouldn't take them down if they really believed in them.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I'm still wondering if there is a reason Regina is presented so differently than everyone else. I don't like these photos, but regarding Regina, she also looks this way in the group shot and that leaves me a little curious about what her nature is going to be in Neverland...

I'm wondering if she'll be 'transformed' in a similar way Rumple had been? I'm also wondering if they're over highlighting her sudo-Arabic wardrobe, because of OUAT in Wonderland and the Prussian/Mideastern/Arabic asthestic it has, because there's going to be some kind of connection with Regina/Sydney Glass and Jafar/Cyrus???????

    ReplyDelete
  69. I think the fans overreact with this photos, when i saw the photos in HQ is much better, now we don't have promotional photos and i guess that ABC won't re shoot this photos, i hope i'm wrong about that, but they don't speed more many with this! =[

    ReplyDelete
  70. These pics are so amateur makes one think they were released for publicity stunt to get added media coverage. It's working! Marketing is everything. And as most successful artist can tell you. There is no such thing as bad publicity, only publicity. That's probably what this was about. I mean really, poor Emma :/ That dress! haha .... I've seen better pics from a high school prom. Oh well kudos to the promo team. You've gotten a lot of extra coverage ;)

    ReplyDelete
  71. Had to check these out to see what caused the fan uproar. I have to admit I have never seen "blurry" as a theme for cast pictures before. Perhaps they were going for dreamy and magical but took a hard right into amateur. Even Emma looks ticked off and she's the least blurry of them all. Must be the hideous pink dress she's in.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I love watching this show with my 6 year old grandson who can definitely take better photos than this. I don't know what type of effect they were trying to go with but it really didn't work well at all.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Yes, they're bad photos. The photos are blurry, look heavily photoshopped, bad makeup for most, a few look like romance novel covers, some costumes look out of place, bad postures and expressions in several cases. Essentially, looks amateurish. Should be pulled; so, good call there, ABC.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Are you kidding? I could do better on my damn cellphone. But its amazing ABC payed attention to the fans. Thats really commendable.

    ReplyDelete
  75. It's not just these photos that saddened me but the fact that last year they were much better. Season 2 even had a really great promo (vid) along with Revenge and 666 PA. This year? This and a promo with 5 seconds of new footage. Come on guys the premiere is in 17 days!

    ReplyDelete
  76. Sometimes when you look for a different kind of effect in photoshop this is what happens. The finale result is never what you were looking. But I'm sure they will give us new beautiful photoshops.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I don't know I don't mind them I think they are all right, who cares they are photos not the actual show.....also I don't think all the photos are bad kinda like some...

    ReplyDelete
  78. The picture of Rumple is a terrible shot too. Besides the horrible photoshopping of it, it's just an awkward angle and flat and boring looking. He's a handsome man and the photo doesn't do him justice at all. The only one I thought did any sort of justice to the actor and character was the one for Belle (Emilie de Ravin).

    ReplyDelete
  79. The pictures aren't that good - I only liked Belle's - but I don't think ABC should have pulled them.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I know right, it did look alot like LOST feels to me. But, I guess the cast are going back to the island. Neverland is like replacing it right now, and referring the Black SMoke to as Pan's Shadow. So, many references to Lost. Esp. the Manhattan episode where Gold/Emma/Henry walk in the terminal, that was in Lost. When Pinocchio arrived in LWM with Baby Emma, up in the sky was Oceanic plane. I love it, but this promo wasn't so bad. I guess, they did the same thing with OnceWonders. Naveen had a similiar pic to OUATs promo pics but I guess, thats how life goes when you wants Apples. Money doesn't grow on trees you know.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Exactly. That's the point. They should let lost go already and let out shine in it's own way.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Some of them *are* pretty bad (Regina - WTF?), but wow, ABC has some demanding viewers. If CW viewers produced such backlash every time the network released a terrible promotional photoshoot, there would barely ever BE any photoshoots for CW shows.

    ReplyDelete
  83. That is the complete opposite of what happens when a show has been going on for a few seasons. They get promoted more, they fix most of the rough prototype they made, and more people watch because of it. These were bad, they pulled them because others pointed it out. No need to make crap up.
