----------

The Big Bang Theory (CBS), Two and a Half Men (CBS), Person of Interest (CBS), Grey’s Anatomy (ABC), Scandal (ABC)

-Down But Still a Solid Competitor:
American Idol (Fox)

-Losers:
Glee (Fox), Beauty and the Beast (CW), Do No Harm (NBC)

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
It was another clean Thursday overnight sweep for CBS with its combination of The Big Bang Theory (11.4 rating/18 share – top-rated for the evening), Two and a Half Men (8.6/13), Person of Interest (9.8/15) and freshman Elementary (7.3/13), which may not be a lock to win the 10 p.m. hour among adults 18-49 opposite ABC’s growing Scandal. As a reminder, another episode of Elementary will air out of Super Bowl XVLII on Sunday.

In series-finale news, the one-hour conclusion of NBC’s critically acclaimed 30 Rock rose to a season-high 3.7/ 6 in the overnights from 8-9 p.m., which was 32 percent above the year-ago combination of 30 Rock (2.7/ 4 on 2/02/12) and Parks and Recreation (2.9/ 4).

In series-premiere news, NBC drama Do No Harm was DOA with a mere 2.4/ 4 (#3) at 10 p.m. Comparably, that was 23 percent below a 9:30 p.m. edition of lead-in The Office (#4: 3.1/ 5), and only four percent above colossal failed year-ago occupant The Firm (2.3/ 4 on 2/02/12). Given that most new series drop in the vicinity of 10 to 20 percent in week two, tick, tock…the cancellation clock is already ticking on Do No Harm.

At 9 p.m. on NBC was the regularly scheduled edition of soon-to-conclude The Office at a fourth-place 3.3/ 5, which was 13 percent below the 3.8/ 6 one year earlier.

Over at second-place Fox, American Idol slipped by a considerable 23 percent from the year-ago evening, with an 8.7/14 at 8 p.m. (versus an 11.3/18 on 2/02/12). While Idol did trail competing The Big Bang Theory by a hefty 28 percent (8.2/13 vs. 11.4/18 in the 8 p.m. half-hour), it did beat Two and a Half Men at 8:30 p.m. by seven percent (9.2/14 vs. 8.6/13).

At 9 p.m. on Fox was tired Glee at a third-place 3.9/ 6, which was 58 percent below the 8:30 p.m. portion of American Idol (9.2/14). Is it time for the musical gang William McKinley High School to graduate?

Elsewhere, an encore of Shark Tank on ABC (#4: 3.5/ 5 at 8 p.m.) led into veteran Grey’s Anatomy (#2: 6.8/11 at 9 p.m.: down two percent from the year-ago evening) and compatible Scandal (#2: 6.1/11 at 10 p.m.), which built by 25 percent from year-ago occupant Private Practice (4.9/ 8 on 2/02/12). Retention for Scandal out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of Grey’s Anatomy was a solid 88 percent.

The CW capped off the evening with The Vampire Dairies (#5: 2.0/ 3 at 8 p.m.), which slipped by 17 percent in the overnights from the year-ago telecast (2.4/ 4 on 2/02/12), and lackluster Beauty and the Beast (#5: 1.4/ 2 at 9 p.m.). Comparably, Beauty and the Beast was 12 percent below failed year-ago occupant Secret Circle (1.6/ 2 on 2/02/12).

In late night, The Late Show With David Letterman on CBS and Jimmy Kimmel Live on ABC tied for first in the overnights in the 11:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m. block, each with a 2.7/ 7. The Tonight Show With Jay Leno on NBC was right behind with a 2.6/ 7. Although Kimmel in the 11:30 p.m. half-hour (3.2/ 8) was nine percent below year-ago occupant Nightlight (3.5/ 8 on 2/02/12), considerable growth for Kimmel in the young adult demos makes moving the hour of talk up one hour one of the smartest programming moves of the season (and the decade).

Late Night With Jimmy Kimmel on NBC scored a 1.4/ 5 from 12:30-1:30 a.m., which was one-tenth of a rating point ahead of The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson on CBS (1.3/ 5). Competing Nightline on ABC won the 12:30 a.m. half hour in the overnights, with a 1.7/ 6, but the demo skew will, of course, be older. And Last Call with Carson Daly scored a typical 0.9/ 4 in the 1:30 a.m. half-hour on NBC.

  1. If those numbers are correct, I must say that Scandal is doing a really good job: 2.8 for a 10pm show is amazing. And it only fell a tenth from Grey's.

Also, good for 30 Rock. It had a huge increase considering last week's 1.4.

  2. Yep, be interesting to see how Scandal and Elementary did. Both scored well but we won't know for sure until the early overnight ratings are released in about 90 minutes.

  3. Why is Glee always listed as a loser? It's still one of FOX's most successful one-hour dramas...

  4. OMG, 30 Rock! Praying for a good demo.

  5. You'll have to ask Marc Berman.

  6. Holy shit! Series high for Person of Interest? :D

  7. I had a dream last night that Do No Harm got a 1.3 demo... O.O

  8. Do No Harm will be cancelled within less than 2 weeks if those ratings hold.

  9. i so hope those scandal numbers hold

  10. Pascal, those are the Household Ratings. We don't yet have the early overnight ratings. Those will come through in about 1 hr.

  12. It's not a surprise, there didn't seem to be much interest and most of the people that watched it didn't seem to like it that much.

  14. 0.9 for Do No Harm?!?
I expected it to flop, but not with such numbers. This would be medicore premiere numbers for CW and just awful for every other broadcast network.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Mostly because it bled so many viewers from its AI lead in or at least that's what I can gather.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Glad POI is still doing so well!

    ReplyDelete
  17. A 0.9 is what Arrow and Supernatural can easily get on the CW, this is just embarassing.

    ReplyDelete
  18. But it's really not. The ratings keep dropping. They have a slot at 9pm with American Idol as a lead-in on a thursday night and an eight year old show still beats it at 8pm on Mondays with no lead-in at all. Plus, FOX also have this new show that's doing great so far.

  19. Ouch! I liked the Do No Harm pilot!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Oh yeah, I totally forget while I was checking in traffic! Thanks! Still a good rating though!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yes, but its ratings suck for a show with the best lead-in the network can provide and it would fall even more without it. Likely cancelation IMO

  22. I am not surprised about Do No Harm at all, I mean NBC's Thursday night dramas don't do well to begin with and this show is pretty bad.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yay for POI & Elementary!

    ReplyDelete
  24. no likely renewal if it stays at around a 0.6/0.7 average till the end of the season

    ReplyDelete
  25. no its was down 0.1 from its last episode, so not a series high

    ReplyDelete
  26. while its numbers are good compared to the other scripted shows on FOX, it doesnt retain Idols lead well hence it being a loser.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Glee's numbers are fine could be better but still good enough for FOX, it will be renewed for a season 5

    ReplyDelete
  28. Glee actually did worse (-12%) than what The Finder did one year ago on Thursday Feb 2...

    ReplyDelete
  29. There are other shows doing worst.

    ReplyDelete
  30. If BatB remains stable, I think it'll get renewed but moved to Friday after Nikita. The CW needs something to fill the Friday 9pm slot.

    ReplyDelete
  31. It's about Viewer Retention(the number of people who stay on from the lead-in). While the numbers are good it is a loser because they should be better with that sizable lead.

    ReplyDelete
  32. It's probably going to be renewed, never said otherwise. Renewal depends on other factors than just the ratings. But Glee isn't as popular as it used to be two years ago. At least, not in the US. Demo wise, it's doing good. 5.54 viewers is bad compared to their big 9 for s1-2. It's the kind of show that got a lot of promotion at first but once the ratings drop that fast, it's a spiral cycle and they can't come back from it.

  33. I think at this point a 3rd season of POI is assured, it beat Grey's twice this season. Nothing against Grey's or its fans, just happy POI's doing this well for a show that everyone thought wouldn't make it past S1
