Darren Aronofsky to Direct Hobgoblin Pilot For HBO

While Darren Aronofsky may have backed out of The Wolverine in March and crushed many hearts and dreams, he might win some back with his first adventure into television. HBO’s Hobgoblin has been steadily picking up steam since the period drama written by Pulitzer Prize-winner Michael Chabon (The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay) and his wife, Ayelet Waldman, first broke onto the scene. Why? Because it pits con men and magicians against Hitler and the Germans in World War II. Now Heat Vision says that the television series has picked up Aronofsky to direct the pilot.

Chabon and Waldman will be making this their first professional collaboration, and both have history on the big screen as well. As we noted back in March, Chabon has lent his craft to a few recent large-scale films, most notably Spider-Man 2 and Disney’s upcoming space epic John Carter. Two of his novels turned into films and power producer Scott Rudin has snapped up the rights to two other novels, with The Yiddish Policemen’s Union set to be brought to life by the Coen Brothers. Additionally, Waldman’s novel Love and Other Impossible Pursuits was recently adapted into the Natalie Portman star vehicle The Other Woman.

The point here is that the two have history getting films made out of their works and have attracted high-profile talent. With Aronofsky off The Wolverine, his slate is currently clean and I can see the three of them hitting it off while working together on the pilot. Kavalier & Clay is in development hell, but I could see Chabon possibly hocking his wares on the director to see what he thinks. At the very least, this could lead to Chabon helping out Aronofsky in the scripting phase on future material. As for Hobgoblin, Chabon and Waldman are set to co-write and executive produce the series, with John Lesher and Adam Kassan executive producing through their production banner, Le Grisbi Productions.
