Friday Night Lights - Episode 4.10 - I can't - Recap

We're getting into the home stretch of season 4 and seems like every body's making choices that have bits of good and some of that bad stuff too. (quick note: new episodes return July 24th, so we don't get a new episode this Friday.) Spoilers ahead.

Previously on Friday Light Nights we see Billy telling Tim how much they can make running a chop shop; Tami Taylor asking her daughter Julie about her new friend Ryan; Becky telling Luke that she is pregnant; Becky telling Tim she's scared and doesn't know what to do about the baby.

The episode starts out in Church with the pastor pointing out Luke as a role model for the congregation. The church bends their heads to pray but Luke has a shell shocked look on his face and he barely gets out the words of the Lord's Prayer.

A Junkyard owner tells Tim he can't show up with these stripped cars anymore; he's worried about the cops and whatnot.

Over at Ray's Barbecue Coach sits with Vince and goes over some football plays. Vince isn't picking up all the information. Vince gets to work when he sees Virgil heading over. Virgil tells Coach that he sees him starting to study some Delay plays with Vince. Coach says he's thinking about it. Virgil, for the first time seems interested in football and it leaves the coach with a confused look on his face.

Tim asks Becky how's she doing. She says still pregnant, so she's had better days. Tim urges her to talk with her mom, but that's the last thing Becky wants to do. Tim gets up and takes Becky by the hand and says let's go.

Later, Tim knocks on the Taylor's door and tells Tami he needs help with a friend. He looks to his truck and we see Becky in the passenger seat.

Inside, Tami sends Tim to wait outside. Tami suggests Becky she has to tell her mom. Tami also says there's a teen clinic and an adoption agency she could help her with. Becky asks what if I don't want to have the baby? Tami, getting the message, says that she could help her with that as well.

-Opening Credits-

Coach gets on Vince at practice when he's screwing up the Delay plays. Virgil (who has left football out his life for a long time) shows up for the first time to watch the Lions. "They're not very good are they," he says to some of his old playing buddies.

Becky and her mom eating dinner and Becky blurts out that she's pregnant. Her mom thinks she's joking. Even after Becky puts her head on her shoulder and starts crying, she still can't believe it.

Over at the Taylor home, Julie says she invited Ryan (the Habitat for Humanity guy) for dinner. Tami tells Coach about Becky and her situation.

Cut to Vince comes home and his mom is passed out on the couch. Vince tries to wake her up but she isn't moving, in fact she might not even be breathing. He calls an ambulance.

Later, Vince is in the hospital room as his mom finally wakes up. She asks what happened. "You OD'ed." Vince says that you're going to be all right. Feeling the love she sits up to give Vince a hug but her hands are chained to the bed rail. "That's so you won't hurt yourself," Vince says. Vince pleads to his mom while choking back tears that "he can't do it by himself."

Luke tells Becky that he wants to talk. Becky says that it's her problem and she's going to deal with it.

Billy yells at a customer who was about to lift the tarp on one of their chopped cars. He's definitely wound too tight and Tim notices.

At the abortion clinic, Becky's mom wants the abortion doctor to hurry up and stop all the talking. The doctor says that he's mandated by the state to go through his talk. But all she wants is to get an appointment and thats it.

Walking out the clinic, Becky's mom is still heated from the doctor; she feels he was talking to them like they were white trash. Becky tells her mom that she's sorry. She hugs Becky and says she's going to be fine.

Vince asks a lady at the hospital about Rehab for his mother. She tells Vince that there's a long waiting list at public rehab facilities but there's always space if he takes his mom for private rehab, but of course its very expensive.

Out drinking at a bar, Virgil tells Coach that he doesn't know how to talk to Vince. Virgil explains that its not a black or white thing; he understands Vince because he is me at that age: The most athletic guy on the field that everybody wants to follow the play book instead of using his instincts.

We cut to the next day where Tami is driving Coach to the bar to get his car (it seems he got so drunk with Virgil last night, he had to take a cab home.) Tami tells Coach that he can't go out drinking like that. They finally find his car and Tami makes Coach get out and walk himself over to it; almost like a walk-of-shame after a wild night.

Tim tells Billy that the whole Chop Shop thing is getting too risky and they don't have a place to put the stripped car frames anyway. Billy suggests that they throw the stripped cars off a cliff, or throw them in a lake. Tim reminds Billy that the cars are stripped so they don't have wheels, an engine or anything (hilarious). They decide burying the stripped cars is the only option.

At dinner Ryan isn't hitting it off with the Coach at all; he asks the coach what how he's going to handle the rain at tomorrow's game. Nobody, especially the Coach, understands the question. When Ryan says that he's headed to Arizona pretty soon, Coach says, with a good portion of sarcasm, aint that a shame.

Vince knocks on Virgil's door and says he's going to need an advance on his check. A $4000 advance (the first payment for his mom's rehab.) Virgil says he just doesn't have it. He makes sure to point out he's saying No to the money, but not to Vince. He tells Vince I believe in you. Vince says thanks and leaves. Meanwhile Jess, who heard the end of their talk, questions Virgil (her father) how come you believe in Vince all of a sudden. He always no good and you're going to watch him practice and not watching your own son (Caleb) play? Jess says that she tries hard to have him believe in her.

Late at night, Tami is rocking the baby asleep. She wakes Coach up to the question: What would Julie do if she was pregnant? After Coach perks up, she says that she's not really pregnant; she's just asking. Coach tells her to come back to bed.

Luke's dad asks Luke what's going on. He knows something is bothering him. Luke admits there is a girl and he got her pregnant.

At practice Coach tells Vince that if he sees a read that he likes take it; don't worry about the Delays. The defensive coach tells the defense the play Vince is going to run; he tells them if they can't sack Vince they're a bunch of jug heads. They run the play and Vince makes a spin move to avoid a sack and throws a bomb for a touchdown. Virgil looks on and smiles.

Luke walks in to his mom and dad waiting for him. His dad said that he had to tell his mother about the situation. Luke's mom says that Mary and Joseph had a similar problem. Luke says we're not Mary and Joseph mom. Mom wants to meet Becky and then they'll figure out what to do.

Ryan and Julie climb up onto some high water tank or something. Ryan says the best place he's been to was was Senegal; he takes out his camera and shows her pictures when he was there. Julie admits that she used to hate Dillon, but not anymore and that she wants to see the world. Ryan takes a picture of her and showing her the picture, says that's you seeing the world. Ryan leans in for a kiss; they both take in the view.

Tim and Billy hard at work digging. Tim sums it up as the stupidest thing they've ever done. Tim asks Billy to promise him that we're going to go back to just fixing cars, no more Chop Shop. Billy says okay. Tim has a couple other things he wants: stop yelling at him cause he didn't stay in college and Tim wants to be a full partner in the auto shop. They shake hands on it.

Cut to Becky holding a picture of her mom and her as a baby.

Late at night, Coach answers the door and its Becky. Tami says lets go into the kitchen. Becky says she feels weird about having an abortion. She doesn't want one but she also doesn't want to throw her life away. She says that I was my mother's mistake and she struggled her whole life. She asks Tami am I going to hell if I get an abortion?
Tami tells her no.

Becky then asks what would you tell your daughter?
Tami says she would tell her to think about her life and what she wanted and she'd support any decision she made. Becky says she can't take care of a baby. "I Can't."

Morning, Tim pulls up after his night of digging and sees Becky and her mom leaving for the abortion clinic. He offers them a ride but they don't need one. Tim looks at Becky and she gets in the car. They pull out the driveway.

At Pee-wee football Virgil walks up out of nowhere and joins Jess in cheering for Caleb. Virgil walks up to him and says you have fun out there. He slaps him on the helmet and Caleb runs off ready to take on the world. Virgil and Jess look at each other and laugh. The football part of their family is back.

Vince and his mother share a moment before she enters into private rehab. (but where did Vince get the money from?) Vince says that he believes in her and she just beams; she believes she's going to get better. Vince pays the bill with an envelope of cash. He leaves the rehab center and Vince walks into a car with one of his old street buddies, Cal. Inside another guy hands Vince a gun. Vince definitely got the money from the streets and he's back to his old ways.

Cut to Luke on the phone trying to convince Becky he's going to be there for the baby no matter what. Becky, holding her stomach, says she took care of it. She hangs up the phone, sits down on her bed and starts crying.
