TORONTO -- Having bought sparingly at the recent Los Angeles Screenings, Canadian broadcaster CTV on Tuesday unveiled a barely changed fall schedule filled with returning U.S. dramas and dance competition series.
CTV will strip Sony and Harpo Prods.' "The Dr. Oz Show" at 5 p.m. and schedule the rookie CW drama "Vampire Diaries" at 7 p.m. Thursday nights, an hour before its U.S. airdate.
The syndicated "Dr. Oz" series will replace ABC's "General Hospital," which shifts to the secondary A Channel network.
The fall CTV schedule is otherwise filled with returning hits like ABC's "Desperate Housewives" on Sundays at 9 p.m. and -- on Thursday nights -- CBS' "CSI" at 8 p.m., ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" at 9 p.m. and CBS' "The Mentalist" at 10 p.m.
"We were very selective last year. This year we needed even less," said Susanne Boyce, CTV president of creative, content and channels.
CTV's Mondays and Tuesday nights will be dominated by "So You Think You Can Dance Canada," a summer 2008 hit for the broadcaster, and ABC's "Dancing with the Stars."
CTV also will air two new homegrown sitcoms, "Hiccups" and "Dan For Mayor," this fall.
The Canadian broadcaster, which bought heavily from Warner Bros. at the L.A. Screenings, shifted most of its new U.S. shows to the parallel A channels, which saw viewership climb 30% during the 2008-09 season.
Wednesday nights on the A channels will be retooled with ABC's "Hank" at 8 p.m. and "The Middle" at 8:30 p.m., followed by CW's "The Beautiful Life" at 9 p.m. and ABC's "Eastwick" at 10 p.m.
The only other addition to the As is ABC/Disney's "Flash Forward" at 8 p.m. on Thursday nights, followed by the returning "Fringe" at 9 p.m. and "Private Practice" at 10 p.m..
The consistent fall schedules for CTV and the A channels also aims to comfort gun-shy advertisers. CTV, like rival Canadian broadcasters, has seen its conventional TV ad revenue collapse during the current economic downturn.
The Canadian upfronts continue Wednesday when rival Global Television unveils its fall schedule.
